600,000 Settlers Living in Occupied West Bank, Half in Jerusalem
Picture
About 600 thousand settlers live in the West Bank and half of them are in Jerusalem district, said the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) in a Thursday press release.

WAFA correspondence reports that PCBS presented data detailing the distribution of settlements across West Bank districts, and the total number of settlers in Jerusalem and West Bank from 2009 to 2014.

According to PCBS, there were a total of 150 settlements in the West Bank at the end of 2014. The majority are located in Jerusalem district, including 26 settlements; 16 are established on land annexed by Israel and 10 others are established in West Jerusalem.

With regards to the distribution of settlements across West Bank districts, data indicates that there are 26 Jewish-only settlements in Jerusalem district, 26 in Ramallah and al-Bireh districts, 20 in Hebron, and 17 in Jericho and the Jordan Valley districts.

Date also indicated that there are 13 settlements in Bethlehem district, 13 in Salfit, 12 in Nablus, eight in Qalqiliya, seven in Tubas, five in Jenin and three others in Tulkarem district.

With regards to the growing numbers of settlers, PCBS data indicate that in East Jerusalem the number of settlers jumped from 192,768 in 2009 to 210,420 in 2014 and in the West Bank it jumped from 506,869 in 2009 to 599,901 in 2014.

Data also showed that a total of 286,997 settlers, accounting for 47.8% of all settlers in the West Bank, are concentrated in Jerusalem district, including 210,420 settlers in East Jerusalem.

It said that a total of 120,417 settlers are in Ramallah and al-Bireh districts, 72,626 settlers are in Bethlehem, and 37,350 are in Salfit. There are also about 35,900 settlers in Qalqiliya district, 18,000 in Hebron, 15,500 in Nablus, 5,800 in Jericho and the Jordan Valley districts, 3,000 in Tulkarem, 2,400 settlers in Jenin, and 1,800 settlers in Tubas.

The settlements are in violation of Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which establishes that the occupying power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.

The Security Council, the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council and the International Court of Justice have all confirmed that the construction and expansion of Israeli settlements and other settlement-related activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory are illegal under international law.

Solitary confinement… a life in graves (report)
Picture
The Israeli punishment of solitary confinement, which is the most racist and inhuman punishment applied in the Israeli prisons, is meant to cause psychological and moral harm to the prisoners.

The Israeli General Security Service or the Shabak (Shin Bet) says that the punishment of solitary confinement is aimed at prisoners sentenced with high judgments and accused of acts of resistance.

The former Palestinian Authority Minister of Prisoners, Wasfi Qabha, said that: "this punishment is the worst used against prisoners. Many of them fought several long term strikes to abolish the punishment but Israel kept using it".

He added that: "the solitary confinement punishment file if invested seriously and legally will condemn the occupation internationally".

Psychological and moral harm

The freed prisoner Fadi Samarah, who has been freed from prison a few days ago after 13 years in captivity, said that: "In spite of the strength of challenge and steadfastness of the Palestinian prisoners, the solitary confinement is the harshest punishment they face. It causes many body illnesses in addition to the cruel treatment by the wardens against the isolated prisoners".

Mousa Sufan, another prisoner isolated for two years, describes the condition as very difficult, explaining that the isolated prisoner is not allowed out of his cell except for one hour a day.

“The isolation cell is very narrow and full of insects and the food served to the isolated prisoners is very bad”.

He also complained of medical neglect against him.

Esam Ahmad Zeineddin, another isolated prisoner, said that he "is deprived of family visits despite of the several requests he made but to no avail”, urging for an action to condemn and end the policy of solitary confinement, which he likened to burying people alive.

Water theft ... Zionist policy to exacerbate Palestinian suffering (report)
Picture
From time to time it can be difficult to overlook the water crisis in the Palestinian territories, especially the Gaza Strip.

Nearly two million Gazans suffer from environmental and humanitarian crises that are exacerbated by the water crisis.

Occupation control

The first and main reason for the water crisis in Palestine is the Israeli occupation’s control over water resources whether in Gaza or in the West Bank; the second reason is the Palestinian mismanagement and poor distribution of the available water resources.

These findings were reported by the PIC correspondent during the panel discussion organized by the Palestinian NGOs Network in Gaza entitled: "Water crisis in Palestine".

Dr. Abdulrahman Tamimi, director of the hydrologists group, confirmed during the discussion that Gaza Strip is experiencing an environmental and humanitarian crisis and catastrophe which entails finding quick solutions and strategies to manage the water and sanitations sectors.

Dr. Tamimi pointed out that it is possible to overcome the water crisis by transferring water from one region to the other. He said that water can be transferred from Tulkarem and Qalqilya governorates to Jenin governorate for example.

And he pointed to a problem he described as "big" which is citizens' ownership of water wells dug randomly recently or long time ago.

"Therefore, working on solving this problem will make it possible to transfer water which is privately owned to become public and distributed to the regions in need," he said, stressing that water is a right for everyone.

Water theft

He underlined that the Israeli occupation authority had worked on constructing 12 desalination plants to solve its water shortages among which 4 are completed, while there is no Palestinian plan regarding the crisis.

He said that Gaza Strip relies on groundwater as the only source of water supply for all uses.

He also said that the Palestinian decision-maker pursues partial solutions instead of adopting comprehensive ones.

He resolved that: "If this situation remains unchanged the Palestinians will unfortunately be in the near future customers of the water, gas, and power companies” of Israel".

The crisis in Palestine

The director of the NGO Network, Amjad Shawwa, stressed the importance of holding this panel discussion at this time to “review the components, reasons and suggested solutions for the water crisis in Palestine".

And he pointed out that 95% of the Gaza Strip water is unfit for human use. Also: PDF

MADA: Sharp Escalation of Media Freedoms Violations During August
Picture
August of 2015 witnessed a high rise in the number of media freedoms violations in Palestine, and recorded a huge leap compared to what was recorded during July, and when compared to all the months since the beginning of 2015, except for the month of June, which also witnessed a similar number of violations.

The Palestinian center for development and media freedoms “MADA” monitored 50 violations in August, a %194 increase compared to July, which witnessed 17 violations. Taking into account that one of the violations monitored in August included 28 journalists from the Gaza Strip, who were prevented by the Israeli occupation from traveling to the West Bank to participate in a media conference, where only three journalists were allowed to travel to the West Bank and participate.

According to PNN's report, this increase in the number of violations monitored in August came as a result of an evident Israeli escalation in the suppression of media freedoms, where the occupation army and authorities committed 37 violations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, or 74% of the total number of violations, while the various Palestinian sides in the West Bank and Gaza committed 13 violations.

MADA condemned all violations against journalists and the media, and called to hold those responsible accountable and put an end to all violations.

In its Weekly Report On Israeli Human Rights Violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories for the week of 03 - 09 Sep. 2015, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) found that Israeli forces continued systematic crimes in the occupied Palestinian territories. An arson victim died of her wounds, and 7 Palestinian civilians, 4 of whom are children, were wounded by Israeli forces.

Reham Dawabsha succumbed to her wounds, becoming the third victim in her family, following her 18-month old baby and her husband, due to an arson attack by Israeli settlers against the family's house in Nablus.

Israeli attacks in the West Bank:

Israeli forces continued to use excessive force against peaceful protests in the West Bank. 5 Palestinian civilians, including a photojournalist and 2 children, were wounded.

A girl was wounded in Silwan village, in occupied Jerusalem.

Israeli forces conducted 48 incursions into Palestinian communities in the West Bank and abducted 40 Palestinian civilians, including 4 children and a woman.

15 of these civilians, including 3 children and a woman, were abducted in occupied East Jerusalem.

In one example of the week's 48 invasions, on September 9th, at approximately 02:30, Israeli forces moved into al-Kom village, west of Dura. They patrolled the streets for some time and then stationed in the center of the village. They deployed between the houses causing fear among families and children. They then raided and searched a house belonging to the family of Naser Mohammed al-Rojoub (25) and abducted him. Meanwhile, Israeli forces raided and searched a house belonging to the family Hasan al-Rojoub (33), al-Aqsa TV Correspondent. They asked his family to bring him from his house, which is next to their house. They questioned him about his work in the channel and his brother who is deported to the Gaza Strip. At approximately 04:00 Israeli forces withdrew and took al-Rojoub to an unknown destination.

During the past week, many checkpoints were established in the West Bank. 2 Palestinian civilians were abducted at checkpoints.

Israeli forces continued efforts to create a Jewish demographic majority in occupied East Jerusalem. Ya'alon outlawed groups of Palestinian women "Morabetat" and men "Morabetoon" defending al-Aqsa Mosque.

In occupied Jerusalem, on 06 September 2015, an 18-year-old female was hit by a gas canister when clashes erupted between Palestinian youngsters and Israeli forces in the vicinity of Silwan club.

Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip:

On 06 September, Israeli warplanes launched 2 missiles at a training site belonging to al-Qassam Brigades (the armed wing of Hamas), southwest of Beit Hanoun crossing, north of the Gaza Strip. As a result, the site sustained serious damage, but no casualties were reported.

Also in the Gaza Strip, in the context of targeting Palestinian fishermen, on 03 September 2015, a 10-year-old child from al-Manshiya area in Beit Lahia town sustained a bullet wound to the left thigh when he was in company of his father, who was angling on the shore. Israeli forces stationed in watchtowers along the border fence, northwest of Beit Lahia in the north of the Gaza Strip, opened fire at a group of fishermen angling near the fence.

On the same day in the morning, Israeli gunboats stationed off al-Waha resort, northwest of Beit Lahia village in the north of the Gaza Strip, opened fire sporadically around fishing boats sailing within 3 nautical miles off the shore. As a result, the fishermen were terrified and sailed back to the shore, and neither casualties nor damage were reported.

In a separate incident, Israeli navy forces opened fire at Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip sea. A child was wounded, northwest of Beit Lahia village in the north of the Gaza Strip, while accompanying his father, who is a fisherman.

Israeli forces conducted 4 limited invasions in the northern Gaza Strip. In one example, on 03 September, at approximately 07:30, Israeli forces stationed in Kisovim military site moved 100 meters into the west of the border fence with Israel, east of al-Qararah, northwest of Khan Younis. They levelled lands near the border and then headed to the north along the aforementioned fence to the east of Deir al-Balah in the east of the central Gaza Strip. They levelled until approximately 12:30 when they redeployed along the border fence.

Israel continued to impose a total closure and has isolated the Gaza Strip from the outside world.

A patient from Rafah was abducted by Israeli forces at Beit Hanoun (Erez) crossing, north of the Gaza Strip.

2 Palestinian civilians were abducted at the border fence, north of the Gaza Strip.

Israeli settlement activities:

Israeli forces continued to support settlement activities in the West Bank and Israeli settlers continued to attack Palestinian civilians and property.

Israeli forces delivered 5 demolition notices for 5 under-construction residential rooms, south of Hebron.

Israeli forces submitted 2 notices to halt works in 2 water wells, south of Hebron.

3 civilians were wounded as stones were thrown at their vehicle, north of the West Bank.

Israeli attacks on non-violent demonstrations:

Israeli forces continued to use excessive and systematic use of force against peaceful protests organized by Palestinian civilians and Israeli and international human rights activists in protest at the construction of the annexation wall and settlement activities in the West Bank and Israeli policies in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. As a result, 5 civilians, including a photojournalist and 2 children, were wounded.

Following the Friday prayer on 04 September 2015, dozens of Palestinian civilians and international and Israeli human rights defenders organized a peaceful demonstration in Bil’in, west of Ramallah, in protest against the annexation wall and settlement activities. The protesters made their way in the streets raising the Palestinian flags and chanting slogans against the occupation. Since the morning, Israeli forces had closed all entrances of the village to prevent Palestinians, international activists, and journalists from joining the demonstration. Upon their arrival in the area, Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition, rubber-coated bullets, sound bombs, and tear gas canisters, chased the demonstrators into the village and sprayed them and civilian houses with waste water. As a result, many of Palestinians suffered tear gas inhalation and others sustained bruises.

On the same day, dozens of Palestinian civilians organized a peaceful demonstration in the center of Ni’lin village, west of Ramallah, in protest against the Annexation Wall and Settlement Activity. The demonstrators took the streets and headed to the annexation wall. Israeli forces prevented the demonstrators from crossing to the land behind the Annexation Wall, so they threw stones at them. Israeli soldiers fired live bullets, rubber-coated metal bullets, sound bombs and tear gas canisters at the civilians, and chased them into the village. As a result, many civilians suffered tear gas inhalation and others sustained bruises as Israeli soldiers beat them up.

Around the same time, dozens of Palestinian civilians and Israeli and international human rights defenders organized a peaceful demonstration in al-Nabi Saleh village, southwest of Ramallah, in protest against the annexation wall and settlement Activity. The demonstrators headed to the lands that the settlers are trying to rob by force near “Halmish” settlement. Israeli forces had closed all the entrances of the village since the morning to prevent them from participating in the demonstration. When they arrived at the aforementioned land, the demonstrators were met by live bullets, tear gas canisters, rubber-coated steel bullets, sound bombs and were chased into the village.

As a result, a 48-year-old photojournalist, Bilal Abed al-Salam Tamimi, was injured to the face and the right arm by shrapnel from sound bombs, after the scattering of sound bomb's shrapnel. Moreover, , many participants suffered tear gas inhalation and others sustained bruises. Additionally, Israeli forces abducted a 32-year-old journalist, who is a reporter with Palestine TV; a 28-year-old activist, Lama Nazeh; a 45-year-old activist, Jameil Bar'othi; a 46-year-old activist, Mohammed Zawahra; and a 44-year-old activist, Mohammed al-Khateeb, and took them towards the iron gate and the military watchtower established at the entrance of the village, after insulting, beating and kicking them with their hands and feet.

On Friday afternoon, 04 September 2015, dozens of youngsters gathered in the southern entrance of Salwad village, northeast of Ramallah, on the road between Selwad and Yabroud, near Street (60) to organize a protest against Israeli policies. The protestors set fire to tires and threw stones at Israeli soldiers who fired live ammunition, rubber-coated metal bullets, sound bombs and tear gas canisters in response. As a result, many civilians suffered tear gas inhalation and others sustained bruises as Israeli soldiers beat them up.

At approximately 01:30 on Friday, 04 September 2015, Palestinian civilians and international solidarity activists organized a protest in the center of Kufor Qaddoum village, northeast of Qalqilya, heading to the eastern entrance of the village in protest against closing that entrance since the beginning of al-Aqsa Intifada with an iron gate. When they arrived at the entrance of the gate, the demonstrators were met by live bullets, tear gas canisters, rubber-coated steel bullets, sound bombs. As a result, 4 civilians, including 2 children were wounded:

A 42-year-old civilian was hit by 2 bullets to the right leg and arm. A 26-year-old civilian was hit by a bullet to the right leg. A 15-year-old child was hit by a bullet to the back. A 17-year-old was hit by a bullet to the chest.

In addition, Israeli forces disrupted the electricity transformers all over the eastern neighborhood.
