Trump talks of ‘Mutual Defense Treaty’ with Tel Aviv ahead of Israeli elections

US President Donald Trump is trying to “further anchor” the alliance between Washington and Tel Aviv as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu struggles to remain in power.

On Saturday, Trump said on Twitter that he had spoken with the Israeli premier about “a Mutual Defense Treaty” with the Zionist regime.

“I had a call today with Prime Minister Netanyahu to discuss the possibility of moving forward with a Mutual Defense Treaty, between the United States and Israel, that would further anchor the tremendous alliance between our two countries,” said the US president.

Trump further voiced willingness to meet Netanyahu on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session in New York.

In response, the hawkish prime minister thanked Trump, asserting that Israel “has never had a greater friend in the White House.”

“I look forward to our meeting at the UN to advance a historic Defense Treaty between the United States and Israel,” he added.

The two have floated the idea of a so-called defense treaty days before Israelis are heading to the polls.

Trump has previously voiced support for Netanyahu to stay in power and the tweet appears to be a last-minute attempt to boost his image by citing their close alliance before the Tuesday elections.

Netanyahu is facing corruption charges, which play a key role in the campaigning of his opponent, former Israeli armed forces chief Benny Gantz.

Palestine Solidarity Campaign Demand Israeli Government Be Held Accountable
Picture
Campaigning group Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) has condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s vow to annex large parts of the occupied West Bank, and has called on the UK Government to hold Israel to account for its ongoing violations of international law.

The comments were made just a week before fresh elections take place in Israel, as Netanyahu cited “maximum coordination with Trump” as a key factor in the move towards annexation.

This proposed move follows a series of acts by the Netanyahu government that has attacked the collective rights of the Palestinian people; whether those living under military occupation or as citizens of the state of Israel.

Earlier this year, when Netanyahu ran for re-election and subsequently failed to form a government in the Knesset, he publicly reasserted his belief that that Israel “is not a state of all its citizens.”

While Palestinian citizens of Israel are allowed to vote in the upcoming elections, the “Nation State Law” passed in 2018 in Israel enshrines discrimination against them into the constitution.

Since 1948, Israel has passed over 60 laws which discriminate against Palestinian citizens of Israel in housing, welfare provision, education, public works and building permission.

The move to annex large parts of the occupied West Bank seeks to entrench the de facto sovereignty Israel is exercising over the 2.8 million Palestinians who live in the West Bank under Israeli military control which denies them basic human rights.

None of these Palestinians have voting rights in the Israeli elections; nor do the millions of Palestinians refugees who have been forcibly expelled from their homes since 1948.

Campaigners say this pledge is yet more evidence that Benjamin Netanyahu will continue to violate international law without fear of consequences, and that the global community has an obligation to hold Israel to account for these crimes.

They also stress that this proposed annexation will remove the possibility of a viable Palestinian state, leaving any potential state having no border with any other state than Israel.

PSC has reaffirmed its call for fundamental change in Israel, stressing that all candidates for Prime Minister in the upcoming elections have demonstrated commitment to ongoing military occupation and apartheid.

Ben Jamal, Director of Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said: “This pledge is not only a stark reminder of the Israeli government’s staunch commitment to stripping Palestinians of their rights and their homeland, but it also highlights that the fundamental issues with the Israeli state run far deeper than one politician or government.

Netanyahu is making this pledge because he is confident that it will win him votes at next week’s elections. There is no meaningful pressure for change coming from within Israel, and so pressure needs to be exerted externally.

It is incumbent upon the UK government, which continues to repeat the mantra of its support for a two-state solution, to accept the reality that these steps remove the possibility of a Palestinian state. Actions, and not words are required.

– PSC reaffirms its call for an immediate ban on the import of settlement goods and an end to the arms trade with Israel, and calls upon UK civil society to continue applying pressure on all companies complicit in Israel’s human rights abuses.”

European powers slam Netanyahu’s vow to annex W. Bank areas
Picture
Five leading European powers issued a joint statement last Thursday condemning Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu’s pledge to impose Israeli sovereignty on the Jordan Valley, saying it would be “a serious violation of international law.”

“France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom are deeply concerned about the announcement of a possible annexation of areas in the West Bank, particularly the Jordan valley and the northern shore of the Dead Sea,” the statement said.

“This would, if implemented, constitute a serious breach of international law,” it said, warning that such moves “imperil the viability of a two-state solution, based on the 1967 lines, and make it harder to achieve a just and lasting peace.”

The European countries’ position joined widespread international condemnation of Netanyahu’s announcement.

Battling to win reelection on September 17, Netanyahu made the pledge on Tuesday night, drawing strong condemnation from the Palestinians, Arab states, the United Nations, the European Union and different countries.

He also repeated his intention to annex Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, but in coordination with US president Donald Trump.

Netanyahu’s annexation plan would violate international law: UN chief
Picture
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has censured Israeli minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s election pledge to annex the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank, terming it as a gross violation of international law.

“Such steps, if implemented, would constitute a serious violation of international law,” Guterres’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement on Wednesday.

The UN chief said such a move would undermine chances for peace in the Middle East region.

It would “be devastating to the potential of reviving negotiations and regional peace, while severely undermining the viability of the two-state solution,” he said.

Netanyahu on Tuesday vowed to annex the Jordan Valley in the West Bank if he emerges victorious in the snap legislative elections on September 17.

Netanyahu’s pledge was roundly condemned by the Palestinians as well as countries in the Middle East, including Jordan, Iran, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Netanyahu hinted that US President Donald Trump’s yet-t-be-unveiled |peace” proposal on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would allow the regime to annex the Jordan Valley — which accounts for a quarter of the West Bank — and the northern Dead Sea.

He said he expected Trump to present his highly controversial plan just days after Israel’s September 17 elections, and that he would look to apply “sovereignty” over the settlements built on occupied Palestinian land in coordination with Washington.

International bodies like the UN, the European Union (EU) and the Arab League also denounced the plan.

The EU said it would not recognize any change to Israel’s borders that was not agreed to by both sides.

The UN on Tuesday warned that the plan would have no “international legal effect.”

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) also said it would hold an emergency foreign ministers’ meeting on Sunday to discuss the issue.

OIC Secretary General Yousef bin al-Othaimeen strongly condemned Netanyahu’s intention, emphasizing that the “dangerous announcement is another aggression against the Palestinian people’s rights.”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stressed that all agreements signed with Israel and their resulting obligations would end if the Tel Aviv regime annexes the Jordan Valley.

“We have the right to defend our rights and achieve our goals by all available means, regardless of the consequences, as Netanyahu’s decisions contradict with United Nations resolutions and international law,” Abbas pointed out.

Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Six-Day War in a move never recognized by the international community.

The Jordan Valley accounts for around one-third of the West Bank.

Israeli right-wing politicians have long viewed the 2,400-square kilometer (926.65-square mile) strategic area as a part of the territory they would never retreat from and stated that the Israeli military would maintain its control there under any peace agreement with the Palestinians.

Al Thani: Palestinian cause “mother of Arab issues”
Picture
Qatari foreign minister Mohamed Al Thani has described the Palestinian cause as “the mother and foundation of all Arab issues.”

In Twitter remarks on Wednesday, Al Thani said “there can be no peace in the region without a just and lasting solution [to the Palestinian cause] in accordance with international resolutions.”

“We reject the Israeli occupation’s continued aggression against the Palestinian people and reiterated our firm position on this issue,” he added.

Netanyahu told a news conference last Tuesday that he would annex the Jordan Valley and the north of the Dead Sea to Israel if he won next week’s general elections and formed a new government.

Hamas slams Friedman’s recent remarks in Sderot
Picture
The Hamas Movement has condemned US ambassador David Friedman’s remarks in Sderot settlement on Tuesday as “aggression and incitement against the Palestinian people.”

“US ambassador to the occupation David Friedman’s remarks in Sderot settlement on the border with Gaza, in which he affirmed that the Jews would remain on this land forever and that his government did not mind if the Gaza Strip was attacked reflected his extremist and Zionist mentality and not a position coming from an ambassador of a country claiming to be neutral and a mediator for peace and stability, senior Hamas official Basem Na’im said in a press release.

“Such remarks are unacceptable and reprehensible and we see them as direct aggression and explicit incitement against our people. They would also harm international efforts to resolve the conflict and achieve stability in the region,” Na’im added.

The Hamas official underlined that such American positions, which he described as “extremist,” paved the way for Israel to escalate its racist practices, settlement expansion, land annexation, Judaization and aggression against the Palestinian people, and helped it to escape accountability for its ongoing crimes.

Friedman, a lawyer and son of a Jewish rabbi, was appointed in December 2016 as US ambassador to Tel Aviv. He repeatedly voiced doubts about the possibility of reaching a two-state solution between the Palestinians and Israelis.

Netanyahu says Israel will annex Jordan Valley if he wins reelection
Picture

The prime minister says it would be a 'historic move' if Israel was to apply its sovereignty over the disputed territory in the West Bank; adds other Israeli settlements will follow if his Likud party would emerge victorious after September 17 elections

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Tuesday Israel will establish its sovereignty over the Jordan Valley if his party would win next week's elections, effectively triggering the disputed territory's annexation.

Speaking at a special press conference broadcast live on Israeli TV channels just a week before the September 17 elections, Netanyahu called the move a "historic opportunity" to extend Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank.

"Today, I announce my intention, after the establishment of a new government, to apply Israeli sovereignty to the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea," Netanyahu said.

The prime minister said other Israeli settlements in the West Bank will follow, but after the publication of the long-delayed U.S. President Donald Trump's peace plan.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh, in a statement issued shortly before Netanyahu spoke, amid reports of a possible annexation announcement, said that the Israeli leader is "a prime destroyer of the peace process".

Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said Netanyahu's annexation plan is "manifestly illegal."

"Israel's unprecedented culture of impunity, enabled by international inaction, is the only explanation for Mr. Netanyahu's audacity in using annexation as an election ploy," he said, calling on the international community to block the Israeli leader's plan.

The Jordan Valley, which Palestinians seek for the eastern perimeter of a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, stretches from the Dead Sea in the south to the Israeli city of Beit Shean in the north. Israel captured the West Bank in a 1967 war.

The 2,400 square kilometre (926.65 square mile) valley accounts for nearly 30 percent of the territory in the West Bank. Israel has long said it intends to maintain military control there under any peace agreement with the Palestinians.

President receives the Norwegian envoy for the Middle East peace process
President Mahmoud Abbas received at his office today the Norwegian envoy to the Middle East peace process, Tor Fennesland, and the Norwegian representative to Palestine, Hilda Haraldstad.

The President briefed his guest on the latest developments in the Palestinian territories and the Israeli and American measures aimed at undermining peace based on the principle of the two-state solution.

He affirmed the Palestinian commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace in accordance with international resolutions and international law while rejecting any projects or plans that do not adhere to the foundations of the peace process, namely to end the Israeli occupation and achieve peace based on the principle of the two-state solution to establish the independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the 1967 borders.

He expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Norway for its political positions in support of international law and legality and its efforts to mobilize international financial support through its leadership of the international Ad Hoc Liaison Committee of donor countries.

For his part, the Norwegian envoy stressed his country's commitment to achieving peace in accordance with the United Nations resolutions based on the principle of the two-state solution, in addition to continuing the role entrusted to it to mobilize financial support from donor countries to build Palestinian institutions.

The meeting was attended by Secretary General of the PLO Executive Committee Saeb Erekat, Deputy Prime Minister Ziad Abu Amr and the President’s Advisor for Diplomatic Affairs Majdi al-Khalidi.

EU: Israel’s settlement policy illegal under international law
Picture
The European Union Representative issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Jerusalem and Ramallah.

On Monday 26 August, Israeli authorities demolished a Palestinian family’s home and restaurant near Bethlehem. The structures were located between the villages of Battir and Beit Jala in Area C of the West Bank.

These demolitions, together with settlement construction for Israelis in the area, exacerbate threats to the viability of the two-state solution and further undermine prospects for a lasting peace.

In line with the EU’s long-standing position on Israel’s settlement policy, illegal under international law, and actions taken in that context, such as forced transfers, evictions, demolitions and confiscations of homes, the EU expects the Israeli authorities to fully meet their obligations as an occupying power under International Humanitarian Law.

The EU missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah recall the successive Foreign Affairs Council Conclusions and statements in which the EU has repeated its strong opposition to Israel’s settlement policy and actions taken in this context, including evictions and demolitions.

The continuation of this policy undermines the viability of the two-state solution and the prospect for a lasting peace and seriously jeopardizes the possibility of Jerusalem serving as the future capital of both States.

Israel to expand Shiloh settlement
Picture
Israel has announced its intent to expand Shiloh settlement which was built illegally on Palestinian-owned lands north of Ramallah City.

The Palestinian activist Bashar al-Qaryuti said that Israel's Civil Administration has published a map for a new settlement plan targeting Palestinian lands in the villages of Qaryut, Jalud and Turmus Ayya.

Al-Qaryuti explained that the plan is aimed at seizing new Palestinian lands to expand Shiloh settlement.

Last Sunday the Israeli authorities announced a plan to build 120 new settlement units in Deir Istiya and Kafr Laqif villages in Salfit and Qalqilya.

The Israeli settlement construction activity in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Golan is considered illegal under international law.

On 23 December 2016 the United Nations Security Council issued Resolution 2334 which demanded an immediate and complete halt to the settlement construction in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
