Hamas asks the PA to end security coordination with the IOA
Picture
Hamas Movement advised the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah to end its security coordination with the Israeli occupation authorities (IOA) in response to the arson attack on the Dawabshe family.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, said in a press release on Monday that this should be only a preliminary response to the crime that killed the toddler Ali Dawabshe and his father then his mother.

He described continuation of the security coordination as “national treason” that only provided cover for the IOA to commit more crimes and similar arson attacks against the Palestinian people.

Fanatic Jewish settlers set the home of Dawabshe family in Duma village, south of Nablus, on fire on 31st July killing the 18-month old Ali on the spot and his father a few days later. His mother succumbed to her critical wounds yesterday while his 4-year-old brother Ahmed is struggling for life with serious burns all over his little body.

Mishaal to address a press conference tonight
Picture
Political bureau chairman of Hamas Khaled Mishaal is to address a press conference in Doha on Monday night to explain his Movement’s views on key national issues.

Ezzet al-Resheq, a political bureau member of Hamas, said on his Facebook page on Monday that Mishaal would address the press conference at Four Seasons Hotel at 0800 pm.

Resheq did not go into details about the topics Mishaal is expected to address, and invited the media to attend the conference.

However, Mishaal’s press conference falls at a time when Hamas is launching efforts to bridge gaps in the Palestinian political arena and follows efforts by mediators to stabilize the calm in Gaza Strip.

Israeli woman found hours after she entered Hebron district village
Picture
Palestinian Security forces on Sunday said that an Israeli woman was found in village near Hebron, hours after she was thought to be lost.

The Israeli-Palestinian security coordination said that the woman entered Dura village south Hebron in her own car, which was found hours later in Al-Dahiriya village.According to Israeli sources, she lost connection for hours before she was finally found by the Palestinian security forces.

Israeli sources claimed that the incident is connected to a “secret love story” between the woman and a Palestinian man. However, no further detailed were announced.

Abu Marzouk: No truce before Israel lifts siege on Gaza
Picture
The Cairo-brokered ceasefire accord struck with the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) can only be kept up if the tough siege on Gaza is lifted and border-crossings unblocked, senior Hamas leader Mousa Abu Marzouk said.

Abu Marzouk said in statements posted on his Facebook page that no long-term truce with Israel can truly hold before the siege is lifted, border-crossings opened, and reconstruction materials delivered.

He stressed Hamas’s position that any ceasefire deal has to be struck within a national rather than a behind-closed-doors framework.

Abu Marzouk said Hamas has already updated all national factions and Palestinian Authority officials, along with Arab and Western officials, including Tony Blair and the UN envoy, on its true standpoint vis-à-vis such affairs.

“Hamas shall never be an extension of the Oslo project. Hamas would never accept for itself what it had rejected for others,” he added.

The Hamas official slammed the PA for reneging on its promises as regards the reconstruction project and the salary crisis.

Op-Ed. Palestine and Israel: The Double-Standard
Picture
In the world of marketing, it is a given that what ‘delights’ the customer today, will simply be an expectation tomorrow. For example, when cameras were first introduced on cell phones, this was an exciting concept and people flocked to the stores to upgrade their devices for a fancy new one with a camera.

Today, however, one would be hard-pressed to find a cell phone that didn’t have a camera; it would be the rare customer who would be interested in such a product. What was exciting once, is now merely ‘ho-hum’.

The same concept is true of the horrors experienced in the world. Mass shootings in the United States were once headline news for days, but now, as society has become accustomed to such tragedies, they are reported once, with perhaps a bit of follow-up, but are quickly cast aside as the public looks for the really important news like what the Kardashians are doing today, or how their favorite sports team did in the most recent game.

How often do we hear or read about more Palestinian homes being bulldozed? Business as usual, of course, so we don’t consider the suffering of the victims; it is all too commonplace.

This week, remarkably, a video went viral of a heavily-armed IDF (Israeli Defense Force) terrorist/soldier attempting to arrest an 11-year-old boy, with one arm in a cast, who was accused of that most heinous of all crimes, throwing stones. Arrests of children by IDF terrorists are commonplace; what made this one different was the successful resistance by the child’s family and friends, all women.

The video shows clearly the brutality of the terrorist, holding the child in a headlock, slamming his head on the ground. It also shows his 15-year-old sister grabbing the terrorist’s arm and biting his hand, and his vicious response to her.  The boy’s mother is seen trying desperately to free her child, as other women also slap him, pull at his mask, and generally work to release the boy. Ultimately, they are successful, as the terrorist, calling for assistance from another terrorist nearby, finally releases the child and walks away. In an apparent temper tantrum he throws a stun grenade at the small crowd of Palestinian heroes as he departs.

Israel, predictably, is attempting to spin this episode to attempt to make the IDF terrorist appear to be the victim.

  • He didn’t know, Israel spokespeople say, that he was attempting to arrest a child. That is quite puzzling when you look at the boy, Mohammed Tamimi. He is small of stature and baby-faced, and still, quite obviously, a child.
  • The boy was throwing stones at soldiers, they proclaim. Well, let’s see: stones vs. guns. One wonders who is really committing a crime. We will give Israel the benefit of the doubt and assume that the boy is right-handed, since his left arm is broken and in a cast past his elbow. However, one wonders how much of a threat a stone-throwing child with a broken arm can be to a heavily armed terrorist soldier.
  • The women were brutally assaulting the soldier, Israel says. We will acknowledge that the soldier was definitely outnumbered. But again, one must wonder how threatened a heavily-armed soldier could feel against several women and a young girl attempting to free a child from his cruel grasp. And is anyone not aware of the concept of the protective maternal instinct? The child was in grave danger, and his mother, and the women with her, were willing to risk their lives to rescue him.
Israel’s Culture Minister Miri Regev, who opposes any rights for Palestinians, and who, in 2012, said she was “happy to be a fascist”, said that the soldier should have shot the women who were attempting to rescue the child. That he didn’t is nothing short of miraculous.

The boy’s parents have since been arrested; whether or not they have been charged with anything is unknown at this time, but since Israelis can arrest Palestinians without charge, and detain them for years without charge or access to legal assistance or family members, this isn’t surprising.

Let us consider for a moment the international reaction if the roles in this episode had been reversed. Imagine, if you will, that a heavily-armed Palestinian soldier (if Palestine had an army), had arrested a young Israeli boy with a broken arm. The imaginary Palestinian soldier has the child in a violent headlock. The child’s mother, sister, and some other women rush to the boy’s rescue, slapping the soldier, biting his hand and eventually freeing the child.

Would not United States government officials praise the women while they condemned the brutality of the soldier? Would not the story be front-page news around the world, describing how these courageous Israeli women had successfully fought off an invading soldier, and rescued an innocent child? Would not there be endless news analyses about the evils of the occupation, Palestine’s illegal settlements, unwillingness to negotiate, flouting of international law, etc., etc.?

Why then, has the U.S. not praised the Palestinian women as heroes? Why not condemn the Israeli terrorist? The video has gone viral, and there have even been some news stories about it, but this is due more to social media than to any actual journalistic integrity on the part of corporate-owned entertainment programs masquerading as news shows. And there is hardly a word about the fact that the soldier was, in fact, on illegally-occupied Palestinian territory.

Yet the overall narrative of Israeli oppression of Palestine is changing; the very fact that this event made the news is clear evidence that the old status quo is a thing of the past. The U.S., of course, will be the last to jump on the bandwagon of justice and human rights, and will only do so when it becomes politically expedient. That that day is coming can no longer be denied.

3 Palestinians Injured at Fateh Conference in Gaza
Picture
A number of Palestinians were reportedly injured Saturday morning, after a "dispute" erupted at a Fateh conference in the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip.

Witnesses told Ma'an that Fateh members threw stones at people taking part in the conference, injuring at least three, including a woman.

Ahmad Shahwan, a member of Fateh in Khan Younis, said that "some angry members whose names were not included in the conference's list threw rocks at the conference, injuring a member."

Shahwan added that the Fateh conference took place in Khan Younis with 530 members from 12 regions across the Gaza Strip, with the intent of electing 32 members for the leadership of Fateh in Khan Younis.

Gaza police forces arrived at the scene and were able to return order.

This Time, Abbas' Resignation May Be Serious
Picture
Israeli sources reported that Israel fears that the threat of PA President Mahmoud Abbas' resignation could be serious, this time.

The sources reported that the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed their concerns over Abbas's resignation this time.

Meanwhile, Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu party and Israel's Minister of Foreign Affairs, hoped that Abbas holds up to his threats and resigns, saying that he constitutes the real obstacle in reaching a lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

Born in Moldova, Lieberman is one of the only foreign ministers in the world who does not live in territory officially recognized as his own country. Originally under suspicion over charges of money-laundering and bribery, Lieberman was formally indicted in December of 2012, on lesser charges of fraud and breach of trust.

Palestinian sources reported that Abbas expressed his intentions to resign and not run for the presidency of the PLO, which is expected to take place in mid-September, according to Al Ray.

UN to Back Raising of Palestinian Flag

Israel asks UN to rebuff flag initiative

A draft resolution on raising the Palestinian flag at the United Nations will likely be adopted next week in time for president Mahmoud Abbas' visit to New York, the Palestinian envoy said on Thursday.

According to AFP, the UN General Assembly will vote on September 10th on the measure that is almost certain to garner a majority of votes in the 193-nation forum.

"We have the votes and we are working to get as many votes as we can," said Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian representative to the United Nations.

Once adopted, the UN will have 20 days to carry out the decision, which would be in time for Abbas' visit on September 30th.

Mansour declined to say whether a formal flag-raising ceremony would be held during Abbas' visit, an event that would highlight the Palestinians' aspirations for statehood.

"It is a symbolic thing but it is another step to solidify the pillars of the state of Palestine in the international arena and give our people a small hope that the international community is still supporting the independence of the state of Palestine," Mansour told reporters.

The draft resolution presented last week to the General Assembly would allow the flags of Palestine and of the Holy See to be hoisted alongside those of the 193 member states.

Both the Vatican and Palestine have non-member observer status at the United Nations.

Israel's envoy to the United Nations expressed strong opposition to the initiative, this week, accusing the Palestinians of trying to "score easy and meaningless points at the UN."

Ambassador Ron Prosor had asked UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and General Assembly president Ron Kutesa to block the move, which would break with the UN practice of flying only the flags of member states.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Ban would abide by the General Assembly decision. European countries were discussing the vote and could decide to abstain, according to a diplomat. The General Assembly upgraded the status of the Palestinians to that of non-member observer state in 2012.

Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are among the world leaders converging on UN headquarters as of September 25th for an anti-poverty summit and the annual General Assembly debate.

Pope Francis is to make a much-anticipated address on September 25th, PNN reports.

The Holy See said it would abide by the decision of the General Assembly. But it also noted that the tradition at the United Nations was to fly the flags of full members.

The flags of all 193 UN member states fly outside UN headquarters in New York and other UN offices — but not the flags of the two non-member observer states, Palestine and the Vatican.

The Palestinians are seeking General Assembly approval of a draft resolution that would allow non-member observer states to raise their flags.

Several nations have shown support for the Palestinians’ pursuit of statehood, including the Vatican. In May, the Vatican officially recognized the state of Palestine with a bilateral treaty.

The United States, Israel’s closest ally, opposed the Palestinian initiative.

“We continue to believe that Palestinian efforts to pursue statehood or endorsements of statehood claims through the U.N. system that are outside of a negotiated settlement … (are) counterproductive,” U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said, adding that this includes raising the flag.

A spokesman for the U.N. secretary-general, Stephane Dujarric, told reporters Tuesday that the U.N. will abide by whatever the General Assembly decides.

“We’re moving into somewhat uncharted territory here,” he said.

Khater: No tangible results on ceasefire agreement
Picture
Sami Khater, member of Hamas political bureau, said Tony Blair’s attempt to conclude ceasefire agreement between Palestinian resistance and Israel has not succeeded yet in reaching tangible results.

Khater told Quds Press that the attempt made by the European and western parties represented by the former envoy of the Quartet to the Middle East Tony Blair to conclude a ceasefire deal is based on the calm agreement signed last year for ending the siege and for Gaza reconstruction.

The Hamas leader Khater pointed out that his Movement welcomed the truce efforts and supported it. “We have made our point clear to all parties that contacted us in this regard,” Khater said.

On the other hand, Khater wondered whether Blair would be able to get an Israeli response to his efforts.

Palestinian factions urge boycott of upcoming PNC meeting
Picture
Palestinian political factions in the Gaza Strip on Thursday called for boycotting the upcoming meeting of the Palestinian National Council (PNC).

The factions stressed, in a press conference on Thursday, that the PNC meeting, the first in nearly 20 years, will damage national unity. The Popular and Democratic fronts called on the PNC members not to attend the sessions of PNC meeting which is expected to convene mid of September.

The factions said the session enables a circumvention of the law, practiced by the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, in order to gain control of the PLO's Executive Committee, adding that the results from the session will only represent those that participated and not the Palestinian people.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) said that a preparatory committee representing all factions, including Islamist parties, should be formed to agree on an agenda for the PNC meeting and put into effect the national unity agreement signed last year.

The factions opined that holding the PNC sessions in the current time without a national consensus is totally wrong as it reflects the monopolization of decision and does not contribute to solve the split problem; instead, it disrupts the reconciliation efforts.

Holding the session in the present time and in Ramallah raised questions on the objectives and reasons of the PNC meeting, they added.

For its part, the Islamic Jihad Movement suggested holding an urgent consultative meeting of the Palestinian factions to prepare for the arrangement of the Palestinian internal issues.

The PNC, responsible for deciding on PLO policies, is convening to elect new Executive Committee, the PLO's primary executive body, for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Mishaal discusses PNC with Uraikat
Picture
Political bureau chairman of Hamas Khaled Mishaal discussed with acting Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) secretary Saeb Uraikat the call for the convening of the Palestinian National Council (PNC), the PLO’s parliament-in-exile.

Quds Press quoted a responsible source in Hamas as saying that Mishaal received Uraikat in Doha on Thursday for a discussion on a number of Palestinian issues especially the call for convening a PNC session by mid-September.

Hamas earlier warned in a statement of the seriousness of the call, describing it as unilateral and a violation of previous national agreements.

The Movement said that the insistence of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, who is also the PLO chairman, on the step would practically wipe out all national agreements and divide the national line.

It urged all Palestinian factions and PNC members to boycott the session so as to foil such “irrational policies”.

Iranian official: We will not accept Abbas’s visit to Tehran
Picture
Iranian parliament head adviser, Hasan Shaykh al-Islam, said Iran cannot approve a visit by Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to Tehran, saying there is nothing good in his visit.

The PIC reporter in Tehran revealed that Shaykh al-Islam accused, in a colloquy on Tuesday, Abbas of seeking to achieve Israeli goals by his visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Shaykh al-Islam, who heads a conference in support of the Palestinian Intifada, also said, “due to Abbas’s bad positions against Palestinian resistance, his visit to Tehran does not constitute any opportunity for us, as it runs contrary to our supportive standings for resistance against the Israeli occupation”.

He underlined that Tehran is not interested in choosing between him and his antagonists like Mohammad Dahlan and Yaser Abed Rabbu as they all are against the Palestinian resistance approach.

Palestinian police dismantle unexploded ordnance in Hebron
Picture
The Palestinian police's engineering and explosives unit on Wednesday dismantled an old 52-mm mortar shell that was found in the village of al-Majd in southwestern Hebron.

Security sources told Ma'an that a local farmer found the mortar shell while working on his land and immediately informed the police. The engineering and explosives unit went to the site, where they found the unexploded ordnance to be "very dangerous and old," the sources said.

The unit then secured the area before dismantling the shell. Security sources called on all Palestinians to inform the police of any suspicious objects found. It was not clear when the shell dated from, although successive wars have left the occupied Palestinian territory littered with unexploded ordnance.

Last year, three Palestinians were killed by unexploded ordnance left by Israeli forces in the West Bank's Jordan Valley. Many more have been killed by unexploded ordnance in the Gaza Strip, which has seen three devastating Israeli military offensives in six years.
