Fateh: If Two-State Solution Fails, We'll Push for One State
Picture
A section of the Separation Wall around Jerusalem

If the two state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict fails to materialise, the Palestinian Authority will push for a one-state solution, according to a leading figure in the ruling Fateh party.

Dimitri Diliani, member of the Fateh Revolutionary Council, said in an interview with the Alternative Information Center that such a one state solution would be democratic, involving “one person, one vote” and not be some form of a binational state.

Diliani added that the PA plan to push for a UN Security Council resolution concerning an end to the Israeli occupation would effectively pressure Israelis to elect a government serious about reaching peace as partners with the Palestinians. This partnership is crucial and would replace the model of Benjamin Netanyahu, in which the Palestinians are slaves to their Israeli masters.

Speaking about the situation in Jerusalem, Diliani acknowledged there is a percetion that the PA is not doing enough to challenge Israel's ongoing occupation of East Jerusalem. Although noting that the PA can only work indirectly in the city in accordance with the Oslo Accords, the biggest impediment he cited is financial; Israel's budget for building settlements in East Jerusalem and Judaising the city is larger than the entire budget of the PA as a whole.

This massive discrepency in resources can be offset, according to Diliani, by removing the issue from its economic and security aspects and grounding it firmly in resistance.

Diliani stressed that Netanyahu wishes to drag the Palestinians from their current peaceful protests into violence in order to help his bid in Israel's March elections. The Palestinians refuse to be dragged into violence, Diliani says, adding that the resistance strategy in Jerusalem rests on four pillars: mobilise Palestinian population through non-violent activities; strengthen local and international awareness through the media, including that of Israelis since their government is committing crimes in their name; submit court petitions and take advantage of loopholes in order to buy time; and public diplomacy, with its attendant transfer of knowledge and experience.

New Zealand's McLay Backs "Two-State Solution", Sincerity Doubted by Local Rights Campaign
Picture
New Zealand has proposed a two-state solution of an official Palestinian state coexisting alongside an Israeli one. New Zealand is now participating, for the first time in two decades, since taking its place in the UN Security Council, according to the PNN.

New Zealand's representative to the council had criticized the UN for failing to show leadership in the ongoing debate and for abdicating its duties. New Zealand's Permanent Representative to the UN, Jim McLay, told the Security Council that it needed to do more to put an end to the 66-year conflict. He said the most realistic solution would be to recognize two states, in which Palestine would be recognized as an independent state alongside Israel, TVNZ reported.

McLay told fellow members of the council that the current arguments no longer add value and purpose to the matter, even while firmly supporting Israel's existence.

New Zealand's proposal comes at a crucial time, when talks of a resolution between Israel and Palestine are rising among Arab states.

However, as Leslie Bravery reports, on behalf of New Zealand's Palestinian Human Rights Campaign, a US veto on Palestine's recent UN resolution proposal for permanent statehood did not stop McLay from lauding “the ongoing efforts of the United States to resolve this issue”, or going on to insist that “US leadership is indispensable.”

In assessing the worth of New Zealand's presence at the Security Council, another assertion by McLay was also reviewed by Bravery:

He commented, “increased radicalization within some Palestinian communities prompts responses from Israel.”

McLay made no mention of the fanatical daily attacks by illegal Israeli settlers on Palestinian agriculture, with their continuous uprooting of olive trees by both settlers and the Israeli military alike.

Furthermore, Bravery points out that "UN Security Council Resolution 1860 obliges Israel to open the port of Gaza and to facilitate the free movement of goods and people between Gaza and the West Bank. Bombed-out Gaza residents, struggling to find clean water, remain homeless while Palestinian farms and fishing boats are regularly under fire from Israeli government forces. In the recent freezing weather, two infants have already died from exposure. Devastating levels of unemployment are pushing the population ever deeper into poverty while the Israeli blockade prevents rebuilding. These appalling conditions, quite apart from the suffering under direct military occupation endured by the population in the West Bank, provide undeniable evidence of the complete absence of security for the Palestinian people. Why has the New Zealand representative at the Security Council not demanded action by the Security Council to require Israel to end its ceasefire violations (five already this month alone) and implement Security Council resolution 1860?"

US Secretary of State and Middle East Quartet member John Kerry is also reportedly an advocate of a two-state solution, ever insisting on further formal negotiations between Palestinian and Israeli officials to achieve peace in the region, while simultaneously backing increased illegal settlement expansion efforts and further colonial strategies imposed by the Israeli government.

Thousands march in Gaza to commemorate PFLP founder
Picture
Thousands of Palestinians marched in Gaza on Monday to commemorate the death of George Habash, the founder of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

The march, led by PFLP leaders and national factions, set off from the Unknown Soldier's Square in Gaza City and called for national unity and an end to political division.

"Our message today, on the memory of the death of al-Hakim (the wise one), George Habash, is to hold to the values he represented during his lifetime, since founding the Arab Nationalist Movement until the day he left us," PFLP leader Kayid al-Ghoul said.

Habash was "known for his revolutionary ethics as an entrance to a clean policy based on our people's rights, the history of Palestine and his deep faith in the ability to achieve victory against Israel," al-Ghoul added.

George Habash, a Palestinian Christian, founded the leftist PFLP and led the party until 2000, when health issues forced him to resign.

He died in Amman on Jan. 26, 2008, at the age of 82.

Fatah organizes West Bank rallies against Israel
Picture
The Palestinian Authority's ruling Fatah movement is set to organize rallies across the West Bank on Monday in protest against "the Israeli occupation's punitive procedures."

The protests come as the Palestinian leadership submitted a draft resolution at the UN Security Council asking to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land by 2017.

In a statement Fatah has been disseminating in the past few days, the movement urged all its supporters to join the rallies in their districts.

The statement highlighted that protests and different aspects of popular resistance are meant to show opposition to the "occupation which steals Palestinian tax revenues."

In addition, the protests are attempts to support the Palestinian leadership in its political efforts to end the Israeli occupation.

The statement has called upon demonstrators to assemble at noon in central points in each West Bank district.

The goals of the protests announced in the Fatah statement include support to the political efforts at an international level, escalating popular resistance against the Israeli occupation, urging the Palestinian people to embrace a far-reaching boycott of Israel and to organize as many popular resistance activities as possible against the Israeli occupation.

PFLP calls for forming a united resistance front
Picture
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) called Monday for forming a united front based on resistance option to face the “Zionist-US-Western reactionary" triangle.

The PFLP statement called for “opening all fronts before resistance against the occupation and to confront the Zionist-US aggression which threatens our peoples’ future, identity, and national causes.”

The PFLP renewed its strong rejection to re-submitting the Palestinian proposal to end occupation within two years with the UN Security Council, calling for increasing Palestinian efforts to join UN institutions and conventions in order to prosecute Israeli leaders for committing war crimes.

The statement stressed the need to end the internal division according to Cairo agreements, accelerate Gaza reconstruction, and to form a national front based on resistance option.

The PFLP also called for re-structuring the PLO, to end all forms of division and to re-establish a new Palestinian political strategy based on partnership and ending the path of Oslo accords.

Palestine under pressure to back down statehood bill: FM
Picture
The Palestinian government has faced growing pressure by the United States and some European and Arab countries to back down on a statehood bill at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), says the country’s foreign minister.

Despite all pressures, Palestinian officials "are determined to approach the UN Security Council,” Riyad al-Malki told Voice of Palestine Radio on Sunday, adding, “but we still have not set a date for this move."

Malki added that Palestinian authorities have a plan to visit five countries that recently became members of the UNSC -- New Zealand, Venezuela, Angola, Malaysia, and Spain -- in a bid to win their support in case the draft resolution is submitted to the council.

In December last year, Palestinians presented a bid for statehood to the Security Council as Washington and Tel Aviv were formulating a joint opposition against the move.

The resolution needed to secure at least nine votes to be adopted by the 15-member council. However, it managed to garner only eight positive votes, as the US and Australia voted against the resolution and the UK, Rwanda, Nigeria, South Korea and Lithuania abstained.

The draft resolution designated occupied East al-Quds (Jerusalem) as the capital of a future Palestinian state, addressed the issue of Palestinians in Israeli prisons and demanding the end of Israeli occupation by 2017.

In November 2012, the United Nations General Assembly voted to upgrade Palestine’s status at the UN from "non-member observer entity" to "non-member observer state" despite strong opposition from Israel and the US.

PFLP: The PA became hostage to US money

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) said "the Palestinian Authority (PA) became useless after it made itself hostage to US money and Israeli-controlled tax funds."

In Facebook remarks on Sunday, senior official of the PFLP Zulfiqar Suwairjo stated the PA has no longer raison d'être  beyond the VIP privileges and personal interests of its officials.

He also said that "finding alternatives became an urgent matter, starting with steps ending the security cooperation with the Israeli occupation and enforcing the law on everyone setting foot in the West Bank and Jerusalem, whether they were settlers or holders of blue cards."

The PFLP official also stressed the need for a "direct confrontation policy", and appealed to the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards the Palestinian people.

Haneyya: Looking forward to solid relations with Saudi Arabia
Picture
Hamas is looking forward to stable and durable bilateral ties with all Arab states, most notably Saudi Arabia, the group’s Deputy Head, Ismail Haneyya, said Saturday.

Haneyya said in statements to the National News Agency: “We are always eager to establish enduring and firm ties with our brothers and sisters in all Arab and Islamic countries, namely Saudi Arabia, due to its religious and economic weight, both regionally and internationally.”

He acclaimed the deep and historic Hamas-Saudi ties, hailing the Kingdom’s unyielding pro-Palestine positions.

Haneyya said the fact that Khaled Mishaal, political bureau head of Hamas, offered condolences to the Saudi people and government over the death of King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz “falls in line with the normal course of action Hamas has always adopted vis-à-vis the inter-Arab ties and its Islamic and humanitarian positions.”

Earlier, at dawn Friday, the Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz passed away at the age of 90, ceding the Kingdom to his 79-year-old half-brother, Crown Prince Salman, the Royal court announced.

Zahhar: We gave the government a chance
Picture
Senior Hamas leader Dr. Mahmoud Zahhar said that his Movement gave the consensus government the chance to bear its responsibilities towards Gaza Strip.

During a memorial ceremony organized by the Movement on Friday evening in honor of Palestinian martyrs killed during Israel’s summer offensive on Gaza, Zahhar said that Hamas will give a second chance to the consensus government and it will in the meantime look for the alternatives as it will not remain captive to the government’s weakness.

He stressed the unity of Palestinian people behind resistance option, saying that Hamas has never intervened in any Arab country’s internal affairs.

Palestinian resistance weapons can only be directed against the occupation, he underlined.

“The Israeli enemy thought that our strength has come to an end; however, we fought a heroic battle that disappointed all those assumptions.”

The resistance achieved victory in each and every corner and alley in Gaza, Zahhar asserted.

The Hamas leader refused to talk "at present" about any future prisoners swap deals.

Members of the armed wing of Hamas, the Qassam Brigades, performed at the end of the ceremony a parade in honor of Gaza’s martyrs amid noticeable participation of martyrs’ families and Hamas leaders.

Hamas mourns Saudi Monarch
Picture
The Hamas Movement mourned the death of Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz, commending his support for the Palestinian people and their national cause.

"The Hamas Movement extends its sincerest condolences to Saudi Arabi, its Monarch, government and people over the death of King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz," spokesman for the Movement Sami Abu Zuhri stated in a press release.

Abu Zuhri said that the Palestinian people would never forget the late King's generous support for them and his honorable positions on Palestine.

He expressed his Movement's best wishes for the success of King Salman in his great responsibilities towards his own people and the Arab and Muslim nations.

Police officer’s car blown up in Gaza
Picture
Unknown persons have blown up late Monday a car belonging to a police officer in Gaza Strip. No casualties were reported in the incident.

The police officer Hilmi Khalaf’s car was blown up while being parked outside his home in northern Gaza city. The vehicle was substantially damaged, eyewitnesses said.

Spokesman for Interior Ministry Iyad al-Bezm stated that an investigation has been opened into the explosion to search for the perpetrators.

The preliminary results of the investigation indicated that the explosion was caused by a locally-made bomb placed underneath the vehicle while being parked outside the police officer’s home, the spokesman added.

Hamas criticizes EU for insisting on keeping it on terror list
Picture
Hamas said the European Union's insistence on retaining the Movement on its list of terrorism would provide Israel with a cover-up to persist in its crimes, describing the EU position as "a reflection of its bias in favor of the Israeli occupation."

However, the Movement, in a press release, expressed its belief that the general mood of the European peoples rejects such EU position.

This came in the wake of news reports claiming that the EU intends to appeal against the removal of Hamas from Europe's terror list that had been issued last month as a verdict by the European Court of Justice.

The European Court of Justice stated in its verdict on Hamas that the 2003 decision that listed Hamas as a terror organization was based on a wrong assessment, and that Hamas was elected legitimately and thus the EU, according to its regulations, was not allowed to interfere in the affairs of other countries.

The verdict also said that the EU had not provided then any explanation to justify the decision it had made about Hamas.

Ghoul: Palestinians ready to cooperate with ICC
Picture
Mohammed al-Ghoul, head of the parliamentary Change and Reform Bloc, Monday reiterated Palestinians’ eagerness to cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) by providing all needed documents, evidence and testimonies that confirm the Israeli occupation has committed heinous war crimes against the Palestinian people.

Ghoul said in a statement Israel’s frequent refusal to cooperate with the ICC, among many other international legitimacies, is a “barefaced confession that they [Israelis] have perpetrated mass-genocides against the Palestinian people. Their deep-seated fear of being brought before international courts is just as plain as daylight.”

He, meanwhile, dubbed a recent EU move that has appealed a court decision ordering the removal of the Palestinian group Hamas from EU terrorism blacklist a political move par excellence and has nothing to do with law.

“The appeal constitutes a biased pro-Israel stance, and has no connection whatsoever to law,” he stated.

“The EU would’ve better respected the decision of the European court to take Hamas off the terror blacklist. The group has seen the day through democratic elections. Hamas is not a terrorist organization. It was selected by the Palestinian ballot.”

“It would have made more sense if the EU appealed for blacklisting Netanyahu and the Israeli occupation officials as terrorists due to the massacres they have committed against the Palestinian people,” he said.

EQA: Israel transforming western Ramallah into garbage dump
Picture
The Environment Quality Authority (EQA) voiced deep concern that a solemn ecological disequilibrium and air contamination would hit the West Bank city of Ramallah due to the mounds of trash piled up by the Israeli occupation authorities.

The EQA raised alarm bells over a premeditated Israeli scheme aimed at contaminating the Palestinian ecosystem, particularly in western Ramallah city.

The Environment Authority dubbed Israel’s exploitation of the area as a dumpsite “an illegal crime prohibited under the international law.”

An adverse change has hit Ramallah’s ecological system due to Israel’s misuse of such Palestinian villages as Shaqba, Rentis, and Ni’lin, as garbage dumps.

Head of the Environment Authority, Adala al-Atira, said during a stopover in Ramallah’s village of Shaqba: “The 1999 Environmental Law prohibits dumping toxic waste into the occupied Palestinian territories unless otherwise authorized.”

“This is a crime liable to be punished by life-imprisonment and hard labor . . . in addition to reimbursements to be shelled out in case any ecological damage occurs,” she added.
