Clashes in Silwan after Israeli guard stabbed
Picture
Clashes broke Monday evening in the East Jerusalem area of Silwan between young Palestinian men and Israeli forces after an Israeli security guard was stabbed in Batn al-Hawa neighborhood.

Director of Silwan’s Wadi Hilweh Information Center Jawad Siyam told Ma’an that Israeli forces and intelligence officers stormed several neighborhoods in Silwan after a security guard stationed at the entrance to the illegal "House of Honey" settlement outpost was stabbed. Young Palestinians confronted the Israeli forces and fierce clashes erupted.

According to Siyam, Israeli forces fired stun grenades “haphazardly” at homes and stores in the town. A ten-year-old boy, Luay Hammuda Siyam, was hurt by shrapnel from a stun grenade while he sat in a store run by his father in Beer Ayyoub neighborhood.

Eyewitnesses said Israeli forces briefly detained seven young Palestinian men and beat them before they were freed.

Israeli forces detained 28-year-old Muhammad Hani Siyam.

Palestinian tries to stab a settler near Bethlehem
Picture
A Palestinian resistance element tried Sunday evening to stab an Israeli settler northwest of Bethlehem, in the southern occupied West Bank, Israeli media sources claimed. The Israeli second channel claimed that a Palestinian tried to stab a settler in a bus near Beitar checkpoint northwest of Bethlehem, noting that no injuries were reported.

Israeli military forces have attended the area, immediately, searching for the Palestinian who managed to flee the scene despite the intensive security restrictions, the sources added.

Israeli official holds PA responsible for resistance attacks in W. Bank
Picture
A senior Israeli official held the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority (PA) fully responsible for the recent escalation of the West bank resistance operations. The Hebrew radio quoted deputy speaker of the Knesset Ofir Akunis as saying that Israel holds the Palestinian Authority and its president Mahmoud Abbas responsible for the recent security deterioration and terrorist attacks that took place lately.

Akunis also claimed that the Palestinians incite against Israel and Abbas's latest remarks about a Palestinian state without Jews encourage violence and lead to growing terrorist attacks against Israelis.

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) were put on high alert in the West Bank in the wake of some recent attacks against Jewish settlers and soldiers, described by the Palestinians as resistance operations and the Israelis as terrorist attacks.

For his part, Avigdor Lieberman, head of the foreign affairs and defense committee at the Knesset, called on the PA to make radical changes in its school books in order to create what he described as the generation of peace.

Lieberman told the Hebrew radio on Sunday that Israel has to demand the PA to restructure its educational system, and complained that the Palestinian school books do not contain any map of the state of Israel or mention anything about the Nazi holocaust.

He stressed that it would be impossible to initiate genuine negotiations on a permanent settlement agreement before the Palestinians raise their children on peace.

A Molotov cocktail was thrown at a settler's car south of Nablus on Sunday, Israel's army said.

"Around 4.30 p.m. a Molotov cocktail was hurled at an Israeli vehicle passing near Huwwara and soldiers searched the area," an Israeli army spokeswoman said.

No injuries were reported.

Reports: West Bank attacks do not signal new intifada
Picture
An uptick in violence in the West Bank is cause for concern but not part of an orchestrated Palestinian campaign, Israeli media reported on Friday.

A series of incidents, the latest of which saw Israeli soldiers shoot dead a Palestinian who forced his way into an army base on Thursday, have killed and injured several Israelis.

Haaretz daily's defense analyst Amos Harel said of the violence: "Even though some of these attacks had a criminal context alongside a political motive, this is an accumulation that cannot be ignored."

The Israel Hayom daily said on its website that the army was "refraining from characterizing the recent chain of events as a 'new intifada,' but military officials admit that the trend is disturbing."

Military officials said Thursday's incident -- where Yunis al-Radaydeh, 30, crashed a tractor through the perimeter fence of an army base in the West Bank neighborhood of al-Ram -- was not a coordinated attack, telling public radio he had acted alone and was not part of a "terrorist organisation."

Newspapers pointed out that Radaydeh, who was shot dead by Israeli soldiers after breaking through the fence, might have been copying a similar attack by his brother in 2009.

Mirii al-Radaydeh was shot dead by Jerusalem police in March 2009 after he rammed a bulldozer into a bus and a police car, injuring two patrolmen in what police called a "terror" attack.

Haaretz stressed that "not every series of terrible incidents is necessarily another intifada," or uprising.

"Israel has not found any orders from above behind the new wave of terror attacks, not on the part of Hamas and certainly not on the part of the Palestinian Authority's leadership," it said.

"Thursday's incident seems to be have been thought up by a single person or a few people who are unlikely to be affiliated with a terrorist group and do not operate as part of an orderly, hierarchical organisation."

The incident was the latest in a series of violent incidents that started toward the end of September.

On Sunday, the Shin Bet domestic security service said it had arrested three Palestinian suspects in the murder of a Jewish settler on Oct. 11 in the West Bank that had initially been labelled by police as a militant attack.

But interrogators have so far not been able to confirm that the killing was in fact politically motivated.

Suspected Palestinian attackers wounded a nine-year-old Israeli girl in a settlement near Ramallah on Oct. 6, and two Israeli soldiers were killed in separate incidents in the West Bank on Sept. 21 and 22.

Body Of Slain Palestinian Still Held By Israel
Picture
The Israeli Authorities are still holding the body of Younis Radayda, who was shot and killed on Thursday allegedly after he drove into a military base, and said that his body will be handed to the Palestinians Sunday, the Palestine News Network (PNN) has reported.

Radayda was driving a bulldozer when he was shot; Israel claims he deliberately drove into a military base close to the Qalandia terminal, north of occupied East Jerusalem.

His family, from the Al-Obeydiyya town, near Bethlehem, said that their son must have lost control over his bulldozer, and that Israel is fabricating the incident to make it appear as a deliberate attack.

Activists in Al-Obeydiyya said that the family was preparing to hold the burial ceremony for Younis today, Friday October 18, 2013, but Israel decided to keep the body at the Abu Kabeer Forensic Center.

The Israeli authorities later said that the body of Radayda would be handed to his family this coming Sunday.

Radayda Family: “Our Slain Son Did Not Intend To Attack Soldiers”
Picture
Family of Younis Ahmad Radayda, who was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers on Thursday, stated that he did not intend to harm any soldiers or person, and that he accidentally drove into the military base.

Younis was killed on Thursday evening when Israeli soldiers stationed at a military base close to the Qalandia terminal, north of occupied Jerusalem, opened fire at him after he allegedly drove into the base with the intent to attack them.

Israeli daily, Haaretz, has reported that Mohammad Radayda, the uncle of Younis, said that his nephew never intended to attack the base, and that the Israeli claims are fabrications, the Arabs48 News Website has reported.

He said, in 2009, soldiers killed Mer’ey, the brother of Younis, “after accusing him of attacking Israelis with his bulldozer in occupied Jerusalem.” Two Israeli police officers were injured in the incident before some police officers shot him dead.

The uncle added that Younis had to ideological motive for the attack, and added that he is married, and a father of four children.

“He was working hard to feed his children, and provide them with everything they needed”, Mohammad said, “Younis must have lost control over his bulldozer, and accidentally entered the military base”.

“The soldiers just considered him a terrorist because he is an Arab, they decided to shoot and kill him”, Mohammad added, “If he survived the shooting, he would have told him that he did not intend to hurt anybody, but now he is dead, and Israel labeled him as a dead terrorist”.

Furthermore, Radayda denied reports stating that his family received Israeli orders informing them that the army intends to demolish the home of Younis, adding that Younis and his family do not own property, and live in a rented residence.

Israeli officers expect more resistance operations in West Bank
Picture
Israeli military officers have expressed fear that resistance activities in occupied West Bank will continue, saying that "more incidents are expected in the coming period." The Hebrew newspaper Yediot Ahronot quoted an Israeli officer as saying “there is an atmosphere that creates motivation to carry out terror attacks.”

A Jerusalemite young man has rammed a tractor on Thursday evening into an Israeli military base in Ram area northern occupied Jerusalem before being shot and killed. Israeli sources said that an Israeli soldier was injured during the attack.

“The security establishment estimates that the terrorist was not sent by any organization, which made the attack more difficult to anticipate,” the Hebrew newspaper said.

“It's hard to put a finger on one element as a cause for the recent events. One incident follows the next, and there is an atmosphere that creates motivation to carry out terror attacks, but there is nothing that connects the latest attacks,” the Israeli officer told the newspaper.

Yediot Ahronot said that the recent resistance operations in the West Bank may encourage "individual terrorism" in reference to the shooting of an Israeli soldier in al-Khalil, the attack on an Israeli settler in Psagot, in addition to the tractor attack.

The Israeli officer claimed that "terror cells in the West Bank are under constant watch, both by Israel and by the Palestinians".

“Hamas is trying to ignite the area due its current regional weakness,” according to the newspaper, claiming that Palestinian prisoners who were released under the Shalit deal and deported to the Gaza Strip are "trying to direct terror in the West Bank by setting up cells."

Palestinian Killed By Army Fire North Of Jerusalem
Picture
Israeli military sources have reported on Thursday evening [October 17, 2013] that soldiers stationed at a military base close to the Qalandia terminal, north of occupied Jerusalem, shot and killed a Palestinian driving a bulldozers after he allegedly drove into the base to attack soldiers.

The sources said that the soldiers opened fire at the bulldozer seriously wounding the driving, who died of his wounds later on.

The Radio Bethlehem 2000 has reported that the slain Palestinian has been identified as Younes Ahmad Radayda, 25, from Al-Obeydiyya town, near Bethlehem.

The Palestinian managed to damage an Israeli military vehicle parked in the base before he was shot. One soldier was in the vehicle, and suffered mild injuries that did not require hospitalization.

Israeli Ynet News has reported that dozens of soldiers were alerted of the attack, and rushed to the base.

Furthermore, the Palestinian News & Info Agency (WAFA) has reported that clashes took place in the area between dozens of youths and Israeli soldiers.

The army fired rubber-coated metal bullets, gas bombs and concussion grenades at the youths who threw stones and empty bottles.

Israeli forces shoot, kill Palestinian at West Bank army base

Israeli forces on Thursday shot and killed a Palestinian man who drove a tractor into an army base north of Jerusalem, according to Israeli media and a military official.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said that soldiers confirmed a "direct hit" after firing at the Palestinian, who she said had driven a tractor into an army base in al-Ram, near Jerusalem.

"The Palestinian made it into the base which posed a life threat to the soldiers nearby," the spokeswoman said.

Israel's Walla news site reported that the unnamed man died after resuscitation efforts failed at a hospital in Qalandiya, near Ramallah. It said he suffered five bullet wounds.

Palestinian security officials named him as Yusef Ahmed Radaida, 28, AFP reported.

The Israeli army said a soldier was lightly injured by the tractor.

Netanyahu: The resistance activities increased in recent weeks
Picture
Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu said the Palestinian resistance activities in the West Bank escalated in recent weeks after some years of clam. In a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that the last years were the most peaceful in the West Bank thanks to the Israeli military operations, but the resistance activities which he describes as terrorist saw a surge in recent weeks.

Netanyahu made his remarks a few hours after the Israeli army discovered a tunnel extending from Gaza to the occupied Palestinian territories.

Shin Bet arrests two suspects from Hebron area in connection to murder of Colonel (res.) Sariya Ofer in Brosh Habika, who confess to murder

Cleared for publication: Security forces arrested three suspects in connection to the murder of Colonel (res.) Sariya Ofer in the Jordan Valley on Friday.

Two of the three, Palestinians from the Hebron area, were turned over for questioning with security forces and confessed to the murder. Investigators are still probing the circumstances behind the murder.

A Shin Bet statement said that three residents of Deir Samet were arrested on suspicion of murder. Uda Farid Taleb, 18, and Bashir Ahmed Uda Kharoub, 21, confessed to the charges.

The suspects said they had visited Ofer's house some two weeks ago. This was in line with information provided by Ofer's wife Monique, who said that she and her husband noticed Palestinian youths outside their house earlier this month.

Earlier on Sunday, it was reported that defense officials estimate that the murder was not a terror attack and was likely criminally motivated.

Initially, the IDF and Shin Bet believed the murder was a terror attack, based on indications from the scene and the testimony of Ofer's wife who said she and her husband were assaulted by Arabs.

Security forces are now looking into the possibility that the murder was the result of a botched up plot by Palestinians to steal property from the vacation village of Brosh HaBika.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the issue during Sunday's cabinet meeting and revealed his own personal connection to Ofer. "He was a classmate of my brother Ido. He visited our house many times. A mature, serious kid who later went on to have a huge contribution to the IDF and state security as part of his IDF service."

Ofer's wife Monique said Saturday from her hospital bed in Afula, "The state must act forcefully to get a message across to these people. Yaya (Sariya) was an incredible man who was beaten down by two villains."

Investigation into murder of Colonel (res.) Sariya Ofer suggests it was likely criminally motivated

The murder of Colonel (res.) Sariya Ofer in the Jordan Valley on Friday was not a terror attack and was likely criminally motivated, defense officials estimate.

Ofer and his wife Monique were the only ones in the village at the time of the assault. It is possible Sariya was alarmed by the noise made by the burglars and was then violently attacked.

His wife Monique said Saturday from her hospital bed in Afula, "The state must act forcefully to get a message across to these people. Yaya (Sariya) was an incredible man who was beaten down by two villains."

She further added, "The Jordan Valley is one of the safest places in Israel according to statistics. It has the least amount of terror attacks and casualties, certainly in comparison to places like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The country must stand up and act more aggressively to prevent such attacks."

The murder occurred on Friday at 1 am. Monique, who managed to escape, said her husband was bludgeoned to death by two Palestinians wielding iron bars and axes when he stepped outside their home, to investigate suspicious noises.

She herself managed to crawl through the garden and had cut herself from a barb wire fence before reaching a road where she stopped cars and called for help.

Ofer said she and her husband heard suspicious noises outside their home in the northern Jordan Valley community of Brosh Habika. The man was attacked by the Palestinians as he stepped outside to investigate, she said. The wife, who witnessed the scene from the window, apparently phoned an acquaintance, who contacted the police while she was crawling through the bushes. During her escape, the woman tripped and sustained cuts from a barbed wire fence.

Monique made it to a nearby road and stopped a passing car for help.

Report: Israel colonel killed in Jordan Valley

Two Palestinians killed a retired Israeli colonel outside his settlement home in the occupied West Bank late Thursday, Israeli media reported.

Israel's Ynet news site, quoting the colonel's wife, reported that Seraya Ofer was bludgeoned to death in the northern Jordan Valley by two Palestinians wielding iron bars and axes.

Suspected terror attack: IDF reserves colonel murdered in Jordan Valley

Wife of retired IDF Colonel Seraya Ofer says he was attacked outside their home by two Palestinians wielding iron bars, axes

Retired IDF Colonel Seraya Ofer, 61, was murdered in a suspected terror attack outside his home in the northern Jordan Valley on Friday at around 1 am. The man's wife, Monique Omer, told security forces her husband was bludgeoned to death by two Palestinians wielding iron bars and axes.

Omer said she and her husband heard suspicious noises outside their home in the northern Jordan Valley community of Brosh Habika. The man was attacked by the Palestinians as he stepped outside to investigate, she said

The wife, who witnessed the scene from the widow and fled the house, apparently phoned an acquaintance, who contacted the police while the woman was crawling through the bushes. During her escape the woman fell and sustained cuts from a barbed wire fence.

Monique made it to a nearby road and stopped a passing car for help. She was evacuated to the Emek Medical Center in light to moderate condition at around 3 am.

She reportedly told paramedics, "Don't worry about me; go to him (her husband), save him."

In the hospital Monique said her husband "was a military man for a long time; an amazing man, amazing father, amazing grandfather and amazing husband. There is no one who did not love him or connect with him. How they managed to do this to him, I do not know. They surprised him. I don't know."

Magen David Adom paramedic Roni Na'ani said: "We received a call from a woman who said she and her husband were attacked in their home and that she managed to escape and stop a car on the road for assistance. I immediately dispatched and ambulance and security forces to the scene.

Another paramedic, Yisrael Sela, said the woman was "very upset and suffered injuries to her arms. We treated her at the scene and then evacuated her to the hospital. Meanwhile, an IDF medical team arrived at the home and treated the husband."

The woman's daughter said her mother told her that the victim "went outside through the back entrance. A few minutes later she stepped outside as well and heard people speaking in Arabic. She saw that they were looking for her with flashlights." The daughter said her mother crawled through the bushes for two hours, without a phone.

Large IDF forces were alerted to the scene and began sweeping the area for the suspected killers. The IDF estimates that the murder was nationalistically-motivated, but since the assumption is based on the wife's testimony alone, other possibilities are being examined, including the possibility that the murder was a criminal act.

The head of the Jordan Valley Regional Council, David Elhayani, said the victim "struggled with the murderers, who shouted in Arabic and Hebrew. The woman, who was lying on the couch, escaped."

The incident occurred less than a week after a nine-year-old Israeli girl was stabbed while playing in her yard in the West Bank settlement of Psagot. She suffered mild injuries.

The series of terror attacks in the West Bank began towards the end of September with the death of Staff Sergeant Gal Kobi, who was shot by a Palestinian sniper in Hebron. Two days later IDF soldier Tomer Hazan was murdered by a Palestinian who had worked with him at a restaurant in Bat Yam.

Nine Year Old Israeli Settler Shot And Injured Near Ramallah
Picture
Late Saturday night, a nine-year old girl was shot and injured while standing outside her home in the Israeli settlement of Psagot, located next to the Palestinian village of el-Bireh, in the central West Bank.

The child, identified as Noam Glick, was taken to an Israeli hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.

She was hit by a single shot fired from a homemade weapon. The weapon was left by the assailant at the scene.

The assailant has not been apprehended, and Israeli police say they have no leads in the case.

But the Israeli military has stormed the Al-Biereh town, and surrounding areas in the hours since the attack, and have detained and interrogated a number of residents.

Like in the shooting of an Israeli solider two weeks ago, the police and military intelligence say they had no advance warning that an attack was going to take place.

The police say this was likely an unplanned attack by a single, probably mentally unstable, assailant who acted without coordination with any armed resistance.

Following the wounding of the child, Israeli settlers stormed al-Jalazun refugee camp north of Ramallah and began throwing stones at villagers, and vandalizing Palestinian cars.

Tension hovers over West Bank following shooting of settler
Picture
Israeli occupation forces stormed on Saturday parts of the City of Ramallah, the Seat of the Palestinian Authority, following a non-fatal shooting of a Jewish settler girl at the nearby colony of Bsagot.

Palestinian sources and eyewitnesses reported that hundreds of Israeli troops, backed by armored vehicles, stormed the town of al-Bireh, Ramallah's twin city, searching residential homes and arresting youngsters from the streets.

One eyewitness from the Sath Marhaba neighborhood described Israeli soldiers' behavior as "violent and nervous."

Earlier, a young Israeli settler was wounded from gunfire the Israeli occupation army said originated in surrounding Palestinian localities. Israeli occupation sources also suspected infiltration by Palestinian resistance activists into the Jewish settlements.

The Israeli media spoke of a "Ramallah sniper"

This is the third incident of its kind in less than two weeks. On 22 September, an Israeli occupation soldier was shot a killed in Hebron at the hands of "a professional Palestinian sniper."

Israeli troops launched an aggressive manhunt campaign to apprehend the suspected Palestinian sniper but to no avail.

A day earlier, another soldier was killed near the northern Palestinian town of Kalkilya by a Palestinian who reportedly wanted to exchange the soldier's body for the release of his brother who is spending a heavy sentence in an Israeli jail.

It is still uncertain if these resistance attacks which Israel calls terrorist attacks are individualistic in nature or constitute a definite portent for an outbreak of a new intifada or uprising against the Israeli occupation.

Palestinians are facing difficult political and economic conditions and speculations that a new intifada is in the offing are rife in many quarters.

According to Saleh Aruri, a high ranking Hamas official, the latest attacks show that there is a state of bitterness and disenchantment prevailing in the West Bank .

"We have the failed peace process, the continued settlement expansion; a growing settler population in the West Bank …along with relentless Israeli efforts to take over the Aqsa Mosque….These things provoke ordinary Palestinian and push them to rise up against the occupation."

Aruri, who was speaking during an interview with the al-Aqsa TV Saturday evening, said Israeli behavior and PA conduct were leaving the Palestinian masses very little hope.

"It is not important who is carrying out these acts. The important thing is that they are happening despite the scandalous security coordination between Israel and the PA regime in Ramallah.

Last month Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk was quoted as saying that "We are already on the eve of an intifada."

Moreover, one Fatah official was quoted by al-Jazeera as saying that "an uprising of some sort is inevitable."

"You surely don't expect me to tell you an uprising will take place on a given day and time. But I can tell you with a high degree of certitude that an intifada is coming, perhaps sooner than many of us think," Abu Jihad, Fatah grass-roots leader.

Both Israeli and Palestinian spokespersons are expressing pessimism over the recently presumed talks between Israel and the PA.

Most observers note that a "miracle" would be required for the talks to succeed given the extremely insurmountable problems facing these talks.

Others readily contend that there is no real chance left for the creation of a viable and territorially contiguous Palestinian state on the West Bank , thanks to unmitigated Jewish settlement activities and the Judaizing of East Jerusalem.

Jewish female settler shot near Ramallah

A Jewish female settlers was seriously wounded on Saturday in a possible sniper attack in Psagot settlement to the northeast of Ramallah city, the Israeli police claimed. The Israeli police are still investigating all options, including the possibility that the Psagot settlement was infiltrated by a Palestinian resistance fighter, according to different media reports.

The Israeli settler was shot outside her dwelling and taken to an Israeli hospital in occupied Jerusalem. Israelis claim she is in critical condition, although media pictures of her show otherwise.

The Israeli occupation forces, in turn, were deployed intensively around and inside the settlement and made a sweep of the area.

The Israeli army also imposed a curfew on the settlement for fear of a similar attack.

Last month, an Israeli soldier was killed in a sniper attack in Al-Khalil city and consequently, the Israeli police and army launched wanton arrest campaigns against the Palestinians in the west bank, yet they failed to find the perpetrator.

Soldier shot in neck near checkpoint adjacent to Cave of Patriarchs; rushed to Jerusalem hospital in critical condition but later dies of wounds

An IDF soldier was killed Sunday after he was shot in the neck near a checkpoint in Hebron's Cave of Patriarchs. He was rushed to the Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem in critical condition but eventually died of his wounds. An initial estimate suggests he was shot by a Palestinian sniper.

Security forces have set up roadblocks in the area in a bid to capture the shooter. Hebron is under a lock-down.

The shooting is thought to have occurred during a riot in the Cave of Patriarchs area. Security forces at the site were on high alert in light of Sukkot events. Palestinian hurled stones and fired firecrackers at troops who responded with crowd-dispersal means.

Security forces are evacuating thousands of visitors from the site. IDF sources said the army is treating the incident as a shooting attack and employing appropriate measures.

On Saturday it was revealed that Sgt. Tomer Hazan, an Israeli soldier, was murdered by Nidal Amar, who had worked with him at a Bat Yam restaurant.

Amar had lured Hazan to his home in the West Bank, murdered him and dumped his body in a well.

He told investigators he had murdered Hazan in order to use the body as a bargaining tool to free his brother, a Tanzim operative held in Israel for involvement in terrorist activity.

Hazan was laid to rest in a Holon cemetery on Sunday afternoon.

An Israeli soldier has been abducted and killed by a Palestinian man in the West Bank, the Israeli military says.

The soldier was seized on Friday and his body found near the town of Qalqiliya on Saturday, a military spokesman told the AFP news agency.

A suspect has been arrested. The Israeli prime minister's spokesman named him on Twitter as Nidal Ammer, 42, who worked with the soldier.

The West Bank has been under Israeli military occupation since 1967.

Israeli officials said the suspect confessed to abducting and killing the soldier in the hope that he could trade the body in exchange for the release of his imprisoned brother.

Israel's internal security agency, Shin Bet, told the Associated Press (AP) the soldier's body was found in a well in a Palestinian village near the city of Qalqiliya in the northern West Bank.

The military says the soldier's family has been notified, AP reports.
