Israeli forces arrested Palestinian journalist Majdoleen Hassouna, age 26, at al-Karama crossing, between the West Bank and Jordan, upon her return from Lebanon Monday afternoon.
Majdoleen Hassouna, from Beit Umareen village, near Nablus, works as a project officer at the Euromid Observer for Human Rights-West Bank, reports Al Ray.
She was on leave to take part in a Beirut workshop entitled "the Arab International Forum to Support the Organization of Prisoners of Freedom”.
Local media said that Israeli forces seized Hassouna's travel luggage and proceeded to interrogate her.
The Euromid Observer expressed its concern about the detention of Hassoun, demanding her immediate release.
Furthermore, in a related vein, Al Ray reports that Israeli forces arrested Osama Saleam, 10, after storming the al-Azzun town, near the occupied West Bank city of Qalqilya, according to witnesses.
In addition, the military closed the western entrance to al-Azzun town, with its eastern gate, preventing Palestinian citizens from crossing through.
Each year, around 500-700 Palestinian children, some as young as 12, are arrested, detained and prosecuted in the Israeli military detention system, with the majority of Palestinian child detainees being held on charges of throwing stones.

Saturday, May 3rd, was the United Nations World Press Freedom Day, when journalists celebrated, remembered, and protested on a date commemorated worldwide since 1992.
In Palestine, the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) reports, the 3rd of May calls for a protest by members of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS) and, yesterday, this was at the Beit El military checkpoint. ISM witnessed approximately 70 journalists gathering in the city of Ramallah, driving towards the Bet El checkpoint before leaving their cars and attempting to walk through the military gate. The journalists carried nothing but signs and cameras, as they chanted for freedom from the Israeli occupation. It was a completely non-violent demonstration, according to the ISM. |
Upon arrival at the checkpoint, Israeli border police first closed the gate and, then, called many more soldiers to the area, who proceeded to watch and film the demonstrators with their personal phones. The journalists then tried to open the gate, upon which border police began throwing stun grenades into the crowd.
More than eight grenades were thrown towards the legs of the protesters. One hit an ISM colleague in the foot. She was lucky to be wearing thick running shoes and jeans and, therefore, was not injured, it was reported.

The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) on Sunday organized a sit-in in Ramallah, Al Manara Square, to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day. The event was held to call for accountability for the 22 Palestinian journalists killed since 2000.
The general director of MADA, Mr. Mousa Rimawi, declared that this day was the occasion to commemorate media workers killed by the Israeli occupation forces in Palestine while performing their professional duty, adding that the fact that the perpetrators of these crimes were not held accountable contributed to the continuous violation of journalists' rights.
This year witnessed a rise in violations against journalists, while last year saw the largest number of Israeli violations since 2008 in the West Bank, with 151 cases. MADA calls the international community to show solidarity with Palestinian journalists and exert real pressure on the Israeli Occupation Authorities so that they end their violations of Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
MADA also organized yesterday an event in Gaza city during which it honored the media workers who were killed in the last Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip, as well the journalists who were seriously injured. In his speech, MADA's coordinator in Gaza Dr. Ahmad Hammad called for a quick end to the Palestinian division and to the return of general freedoms for the Palestinian society, away from defamation. He also called for allowing newspapers to be distributed in the West Bank and Gaza Strip easily and without obstacles.
The EU Representative in Gaza, Mr. Ahmad Fteiha, gave a speech in which he emphasized the important role that media play in enhancing democracy, freedom of opinion and expression and human rights, as well as in stimulating development all over the world, including Palestine.
The Chairman of the Palestinian NGOs network in the Gaza Strip, Mr. Mohsen Abu Ramadan, also took to the floor, praising the role that MADA plays in defending journalists through its reports exposing the violations against journalists in Palestine. Many journalists, authors, politicians and representatives of civil society organizations participated in the event, which was supported by the European Union.
MADA center also took the occasion of the celebrations of the World Press Freedom Day to launch its campaign entitled "Towards Reform of Media laws in Palestine", which includes different activities that will be held in May and the formulation, in cooperation with different partners, of an advanced media law draft meant to help Palestinian journalists achieve their ambitions.
Rimawi hopes that 2014 will be a better year for freedoms, including freedom of expression. He declared that that there is an opportunity for a substantial change in media freedoms in Palestine in 2014 due to two important changes: On the one hand, the serious steps taken for achieving Palestinian reconciliation after almost seven years of division, which negatively affected journalists' ability to express themselves with a large number of violations on journalists and media agencies; On the second hand the signature by President Mahmoud Abbas of 15 international treaties which commit the signatory countries to respect human rights, including freedom of opinion and expression.
MADA also emphasized its determination in defending journalists and their rights to complete their duties and move freely, as well as the importance of pursuing efforts to enhance freedom of expression. In addition to stressing the importance of holding the aggressors who violate journalists' rights accountable, MADA called for ending all the negative effects of the Palestinian division on media freedom and immediately allow newspapers to print and publish freely in both sides of Palestine.
MADA congratulates all journalists in Palestine and all over the world for their essential and courageous work..

On the World Press Freedom Day, Israeli occupation forces suppressed a demo of Palestinian journalists in front of Bethel military checkpoint, north of Ramallah. Dozens of journalists gathered on Saturday evening at the checkpoint to call for their freedom of movement.
According to Wafa Agency Israeli soldiers fired stun grenades and tear gas towards the journalists who shouted slogans demanding the freedom of movement for all the Palestinian journalists and local media in addition to the necessity to protect them from the Israeli occupation’s violations.
Chairman of Journalist Syndicate Abdel Nasser Najjar said our message on the World Press Freedom Day is that, “ we want our freedom guaranteed and protected, and an immediate stop of the series of the Israeli occupation’s dangerous attacks against the Palestinian journalists and all the journalists working in Palestine.”
“Media plays an important role in exposing the Israeli repressive measures and crimes and in defending human rights; and today we came to demand our rights”, he added.
Al-Najjar pointed out, “ over the last five years, hundreds of journalists and media workers in the occupied Palestine were wounded whether due to the occupation’s bullets, physical abuse or due to inhalation of poisonous gas.
Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) said ‘Israel’ committed 135 violations against the Journalists across the occupied Palestinian territories during a quarter and one years.
The center in a report issued on the ''World Press Freedom Day'' said a significant increase in press violations by the occupation military apparatuses has marked the period between January 1, 2013 and 31 March, 2014.
All of the attacks committed were premeditated and by use of excessive force, without taking into account the principles of distinction and proportionality, or being justified by a military necessity.

A local activist group says the Israeli army has been using "intimidation" tactics against its members since they posted a video on Youtube of a soldier threatening Palestinian teens on Tuesday.
The office of Youth Against Settlements in Hebron has been raided three times by Israeli soldiers since the video was posted, an activist within the group told Ma'an Saturday.
Issa Amro told Ma'an that Israeli soldiers raided the office on Thursday night, Friday morning, and Friday night.
In addition to searching the premises, Israeli soldiers "threatened" activists, demanding to know "who filmed the video" that was posted on Tuesday, Amro said.
He added that Youth Against Settlements had received hate messages on their Facebook page saying "that we will be shot if we attempt to film more soldiers."
But another activist, Muhammad Zghayyar, urged Hebron Palestinians to continue to film aggression by Israeli soldiers and activists as much as possible in order to "expose them to the world."
An Israeli army spokeswoman did not immediately comment on the incidents.
The video footage posted Tuesday shows an Israeli soldier harassing a Palestinian teenager and pushing him away before drawing and cocking his assault rifle after another teenager walked behind him.
The soldier is then filmed shouting insults at both teenagers before kicking one of them in the leg.
He then threatens to put a "bullet in the head" of a third man filming the event unless he stops.
The soldier was suspended, but has since has received massive support online, media reported Wednesday.
Only hours after his suspension, a Facebook page was created Tuesday in support of the soldier, clinching tens of thousands of "likes."
Breaking the Silence, a pacifist group of former Israeli soldiers, denounced that kind of support and said the "situation depicted in the video is far from unusual."
A 1997 agreement split Hebron into areas of Palestinian and Israeli control.
The Israeli military-controlled H2 zone includes the ancient Old City, home of the revered Ibrahimi Mosque -- also split into a synagogue referred to as the Tomb of the Patriarchs -- and the once thriving Shuhada street, now just shuttered shops fronts and closed home
Around 800 Jewish settlers live in Hebron's Old City, among 30,000 Palestinians in the parts of the city that are under Israeli control.
Settler violence against Palestinians in Hebron is routine, with Israeli soldiers rarely intervening to prevent attacks.
Israel's military is often involved in arbitrary assaults on Palestinians in the city, locals say.

They were varied between the violation of the right to life and personal safety of journalists, beatings and other means of violence, humiliation and degrading treatment, the report pointed out.
It added, ''We have documented other forms of violations such arrests and detentions, seizures of equipment, travel bans, and home raids or ransackings.”
The center also spotted 39 firings by the Israeli forces that resulted in the injury of 31 journalists, 22 cases of beating or degrading treatment, 46 cases of arrest and detention, 15 cases of preventing journalists from reporting human rights abuses, 9 cases of seizures of equipment, press ID cards, or news materials, and 4 cases of home raid.
With these stats, the overall attacks and violations carried out by the Israeli occupation ever since the First Intifada – which sparked on September 28, 2000- rose to 1641, the sencer confirmed, saying that dozens of attacks could not be documented.

A Palestinian photographer was injured and dozens of others suffered excessive tear-gas inhalation in clashes in Nabi Saleh village near Ramallah on Friday.
Witnesses said that Anadhol news agency photographer Muath Meshaal was shot with a rubber-coated steel bullet in the foot from close range, and was taken to Palestine medical complex for treatment.
Israeli forces had dispersed a weekly protest in the village as it neared the entrance.
An army spokesman said 60 Palestinians hurled rocks and security forces in the area, and the forces responded with riot-dispersal means.
He said that in nearby Nilin village, Palestinians hurled rocks and injured a border police officer and a soldier.
Anadolu agency cameraman wounded in Ramallah march
A cameraman working for a Turkish news agency suffered bullet injuries and dozens of Palestinian and foreign activists suffered from tear gas inhalation when the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) suppressed on Friday afternoon their weekly anti-settlement marches in Ramallah villages. Eyewitnesses told the Palestinian information center (PIC) that Anadolu agency cameraman Mu'aad Mashaal suffered rubber bullet injuries in one of his legs as he was covering the weekly protest in Nabi Saleh village, west of Ramallah.
They said that Israeli soldiers deliberately fired some rubber bullets at his leg as he was filming Israeli soldiers attacking the protestors.
In Bil'in village, the IOF fired rubber bullets and tear gas grenades at the protestors upon their arrival near the segregation wall, which caused many of them to suffocate.
They marched through the streets of the village as they were carrying Palestinian flags and chanting slogans in solidarity with the Palestinian administrative detainees and denouncing Israel's settlement activities.
Violent clashes also broke out in the nearby village Ni'lin after the IOF showered the weekly anti-wall march with tear gas and rubber bullets. Many protestors suffered injuries during the event.
Two Israeli soldiers were reportedly wounded when Palestinian protestors in Ni'lin march responded to tear gas attacks by throwing stones.

Fayed Abu Shammala, chairman of the organization committee of Palestine’s International Conference for Media and Communication “Tawasol” held in Istanbul, announced Occupied Jerusalem as the conference’s permanent capital. In the inaugurating speech to the conference on Wednesday Abu Shammala praised Turkey’s positions vis-à-vis the Palestinian cause. The fact that the conference is taking place in Turkey is a proof of such a genuine support.
Despite the challenges set before Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip and Occupied West Bank, other journalists around the world did not miss the occasion to prove their ceaseless support for the Palestinian cause and their efforts to transmit an authentic coverage of the scene far from any potential distortion or falsification.
During the opening ceremony, video reports about the Palestinian cause in media and international community since 1897 Herzl conference up to the present movement have been exhibited, along with the role played by media in keeping Israeli crimes out of sight.
“Such policies have been standing in the way of Palestinians’ rights as opposed to their tacit support of the Israeli Occupation. But now things have changed and Arabs have been making proof of a genuine capacity to adjust the picture to the current state of affairs,” Abu Shammala said.
Palestine national forum aims at commemorating Palestinian and Arab icons. It is also a coordination meeting where different pro-Palestinian media institutions gather so as to set practical measures and joint programs to ensure an authentic reporting on the cause.
Hisham Qassem, Palestine’s Club general coordinator, was delighted upon seeing the huge masses, including 400 intellectuals and prominent media figures, that have come to partake in the seminar.
Egyptian intellectual Fahmi Howeidi described the conference as an initiative that translates the world’s “refusal to wipe out Palestine from the Arab, Islamic and international memory”.
“The key message is to remind the world that the Palestinian cause has always been present in everybody’s memory despite frequent attempts to obliterate it.”
The seminar will also tackle the western neutralization myth and fallacies vis-à-vis the cause together with the means often used to brainwash the public opinion regarding the legitimacy of resistance.

The website publishes around 70 news articles on a daily basis in addition to several interviews, dialogues, and reports.
The center’s slogan is: The voice of Palestine to the world and the voice of the world to Palestine. “It aims at spreading awareness among the International Community about the tragedy of Palestinians and the oppression campaigns they have always been subject to by Israeli Occupation”.

Jerusalemite sit-inners confronted Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) and settlers who stormed the mosque on Sunday morning and sustained several injuries in the process. Several Palestinian citizens were left wounded during the confrontations that broke out as IOF shot the non-violent Palestinian sit-inners with tear gas canisters and rubber-coated bullets.
Extremist Knesset member Moshe Feiglin, backed by Israeli invading troops, raided holy al-Aqsa Mosque via Bab al-Silsila gate.
According to a PIC news reporter, the peaceful sit-inners were violently assaulted by IOF near and within al-Aqsa gates. Several youngsters were attacked by batons, pepper gas, bullets, and tear gas canisters. Many Palestinian civilians were left seriously wounded.
IOF soldiers have also closed the Mosque’s main gates so as to deny the peaceful Muslim congregation aged less than 50 the right to perform their prayers within the Mosque.
Along the same line, IOF arrested last night 5 Jerusalemite youngsters including a journalist, blocking any authentic coverage of events.
Violent clashes broke out between Jerusalemite youngsters and IOF soldiers in Saadiya suburb near al-Aqsa, down to Bab Hitta quarters adjacent to the Mosque.
PIC news reporter further documented ongoing confrontations between IOF troops and Palestinian native youth in Bab Hitta, where hundreds of Palestinian youngsters and women, who came to pray in al-Aqsa, were banned to enter by IOF.
The incident coincides with chairman of the Knesset subcommittee responsible for the execution of Israeli policies in al-Aqsa David Tzur’s call to ban Palestinian Muslims from entering al-Aqsa.
Israeli radio quoted Tzur as saying: “Jewish visitors should have easy access into al-Aqsa courtyards.” Ironically, in Tzur’s view, the decision serves Israeli’s interests just as it does Palestinians’.
