Israel was behind JFK assassination: Barrett
Picture
Former US President John F. Kennedy in his open car

An American political commentator says Israel was behind the assassination of former US President John F. Kennedy because he opposed Israel’s plans of becoming a nuclear power in the Middle East.

Dr. Kevin Barrett made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Saturday, a day after Americans commemorated the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s death.

“Anyone with any common sense knows that Israel getting nuclear weapons was a complete disaster for the world,” he said.

“The Israelis are fanatical extremists who feel that they are being persecuted everywhere they go and they have to be extremely harsh, unyielding and aggressive as well as deceptive and violent with the world. So they have a terrible track record of extreme deception, lies and extreme violence. They are ruthless, they are psychopathic and they are the most likely…to use nuclear weapons,” Barrett added.

“President Kennedy like President Eisenhower and all rational Americans obviously wouldn’t want Israel to have nuclear weapons. Kennedy tried to shut down the Israeli nuclear program. [Former Israeli Prime Minister David] David Ben-Gurion resigned in protest and less than six months later Kennedy was dead and Israel was on its way to becoming a nuclear power,” he stated.

On November 22, 1963, Kennedy was killed by sniper Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas. He was shot as he rode in an open car through the city.

Although official inquiries have determined Oswald, a former Marine Corps veteran, was responsible for the assassination, Kennedy's murder is still shrouded in mystery.

The 46-year-old president, who had been in office only for three years, is often ranked among the country’s most revered presidents.

However, Kennedy is also remembered for ordering one of the most disastrous parts of the Cold War, the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba by a CIA-trained paramilitary force of Cuban exiles.

Kennedy was the fourth US president to be killed in office. Many refuse to believe the assassination could be the act of a single man.

A Palestinian man, from Rashayidah village in Bethlehem, succumbed  this morning to wounds he sustained when he was chased by occupation forces seven years ago.

Mohammed Mubarak Al Sawrkeh, 58, died of wounds sustained seven years ago, where he was paralysed after being shot by Israeli fire. His suffering continued along 7 years, local sources said.

The sources pointed that Al Sawrkeh was shot in 2006 with seven bullets in his back.

Palestinian Dies Of Injuries Suffered Seven Years Ago

Palestinian medical sources in Bethlehem have reported that a Palestinian man, 58 years of age, died of wounds suffered seven years ago after being shot by live rounds fired by an Israeli soldier.

The sources stated that Mohammad Sawarka, from the Rashayda village east of Bethlehem, was hit by seven rounds of live ammunition causing him to fall into a six-month coma, spent at the Hadassah Israeli Hospital before being moved to different hospitals in the West Bank.

Among other consequences resulting from his injury, Sawarka became paralyzed after a bullet shattered his spine, and suffered continuous health deterioration.

Head of the Rashayda Village council Fawwaz Rashayda said that the Israeli army wanted Sawarka for seven years, until he was shot and severely wounded.

It is worth mentioning that Sawarka lived in exile, and was only allowed back to Palestine after the establishment of the Palestinian Authority following the first Oslo accord in 1994. He then became a member of the Palestinian National Security Forces.

Statistic: IOF killed 11 Palestinians in Gaza after one year of truce agreement
Picture
11 Palestinians have been killed and dozens wounded and arrested since the entry into force of the truce agreement signed on 21November 2012 between the Palestinian resistance and the occupation, under Egyptian auspices. The series of the Israeli violations have continued and included incursions, shootings and air and artillery strikes, in addition to attacks on Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Sea.

The truce agreement was signed after the Israeli military attack waged on the Gaza Strip, which began on the 14 November 2012 following the assassination of Commander of the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, Ahmed Jabari. The military operation continued for 8 days and caused 190 martyrs and nearly 1,500 wounded in addition to the demolition of a large number of homes and institutions.

During this year, dozens of Israeli violations were recorded, including shootings on border areas and arrests against citizens.

According to a statistic by Quds Press, since the signing of the truce 11 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip; including civilians, resistance fighters, farmers and fishermen.

Israeli forces continued attacks and arrests against farmers and fishermen in the Gaza Strip and against the people, especially in the Beit Hanoun crossing in the north of Gaza.

One Year Following the Israeli Offensive on Gaza: Justice for Palestinian Victims Still Denied
Picture
Dalu Family Children Killed By Israeli Shells
14 November 2013, marks the first anniversary of the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, codenamed “Operation Pillar of Defense,” which lasted for 8 days.

This offensive, like the preceding one, was characterized by brutality and the perpetration of systematic serious violations of international humanitarian law and war crimes. One year following this offensive, Palestinian victims are still denied justice before the Israeli judiciary.

In the period from 14 to 21 November 2012, Israeli forces launched a large-scale offensive on the Gaza Strip.

During the eight-day offensive, Israeli forces carried out thousands of airstrikes, attacks by gunboats, and artillery shelling. Missiles with warheads weighing more than 1,000 kilograms were used in attacks on residential areas, flattening multistory homes and killing residents within the buildings.

The extensive attacks targeted civilian facilities throughout the Gaza Strip, including civilian governmental institutions located in densely-populated areas.

The impact of these attacks on property and victims, especially women and children, increased manifold, due to the targeting of civilian areas.

Hundreds of airstrikes were launched at open spaces in residential areas to terrify civilians. In the last four days of the offensive, a marked increase in attacks on civilian places led to a corresponding increase in the proportion of civilians among the victims.

Throughout the period of the offensive, Palestinian civilians lived under extreme fear and threats to their lives due to direct attacks on civilians and their property throughout the Gaza Strip.

There was no safe place and the threat of death was felt by everyone with no exceptions. The situation became more tragic when Israeli forces dropped leaflets onto Palestinian communities in the northern Gaza Strip and Gaza City ordering civilians to leave their homes.

Palestinian civilians were extremely terrified and thousands of them had shelters in UNRWA schools.

During the eight-day offensive, 171 Palestinians were killed. Of the victims, 102 were civilians, comprising 60% of the total number of victims. 35 of the civilian victims, or 34%, were children, while 14 of the civilian victims, of 14%, were women. The total number of people wounded was 648.

Of the wounded, 625 were civilians, including 214 children and 93 women. Among the wounded civilians were 16 people with various disabilities.

Entire families were wiped out as their houses were directly targeted with missiles with warheads weighing hundreds of kilograms.

The most horrible of these attacks was targeting the al-Dalu family’s house in Gaza City on 18 November.

The four story house and a number of neighboring houses were destroyed, and 12 civilians (5 children, 5 women and 2 young men) were killed and 6 others were wounded.

In a similar crime, on 19 November, an Israeli warplane bombarded a house belonging to Fu’ad Khalil Hijazi in Jabalya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip.

The house was completely destroyed and Hijazi and 2 of his children were killed. Additionally, 7 members of the family and 13 neighbors were wounded.

In another crime, on 20 November, an Israeli warplane bombarded an apartment belonging to Bassel al-Shawa in al-Shujaiya neighbourhood in Gaza City.

The apartment was completely destroyed and 4 civilians were killed. Additionally, 6 civilians were wounded in the nearby street.

Israeli forces targeted hundreds of buildings, destroying 126 houses completely. Those 126 buildings contained 191 residential units that housed 1,229 people, including 710 children. 243 more buildings were severely damaged.

Israeli forces also targeted 233 public facilities, including 88 educational establishments; 83 worshiping sites and cemeteries; 19 health facilities; 3 syndicates; 2 sports facilities; 4 media institutions; 41 service facilities; 6 recreational facilities; 4 banks; and 182 industrial, commercial and agricultural facilities.

This anniversary reminds of the scenes of killing, destruction and fear which Palestinian civilians suffered during “Operation Cast Lead” in the period 27 December 2008 – 18 January 2009, in which 1,419 Palestinians, including 1,167 civilians (82%), were killed and more than 5,300 others were wounded.

One year following “Operation Pillar of Defense,” Palestinian civilian victims are still denied justice and remedy. Israeli authorities have imposed legal, physical and monetary barriers in the face of Palestinian victims to prevent the prosecution of suspected Israeli war criminals and compensation of victims.

Nevertheless, in the context of its continuous efforts to ensure prosecution of suspected Israeli war criminals and remedy for victims, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) established legal files for Palestinian victims of “Operation Pillar of Defense,” to claim their rights at the criminal and civil levels.

PCHR lawyers submitted 246 civil complaints to the Israeli Ministry of Defense (according to the Israeli legal requirements) in order to initiate compensation claims on behalf of Palestinian victims of Israeli violations.

These complaints were related to killing 72 Palestinian civilians and wounding 104 others, and destroying 75 houses during “Operation Pillar of Defense.”

PCHR submitted also 79 complaints to the Israeli Military Advocate General (MAG) demanding opening criminal investigations into these violations and bringing the perpetrators before justice. In response to the 79 complaints submitted to the MAG, PCHR received 26 replies only, which were all negative.

The latest of these replies were the MAG’s decision to close the case of the Hijazi family, an attack in which 3 civilians were killed and 4 others were wounded and the family’s house was destroyed, and the negative reply in regards to the al-Dalu family case, an attack in which 12 civilians, including 5 children and 5 women, were killed and 6 others were wounded, while the family’s house and a number of neighboring houses were destroyed. In the latter, the MAG claimed that there was no suspicion of criminal offences.

PCHR stresses that the MAG’s actions are part of a systematic policy to deny Palestinian victims their right to justice to provide a legal cover for Israeli war criminals and shield them from international prosecution.

PCHR points out that it submitted 490 criminal complaints to the MAG following “Operation Cast Lead,” but it received 19 replies related to 23 cases only.

A reply was limited to confirmation of receipt of a compliant and that it would be examined and PCHR would be informed of the results.

Additionally, the MAG has never referred any suspect to justice in spite of various international reports that confirmed the perpetration of war crimes, and even crimes against humanity against Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), especially during “Operation Cast Lead,” the most notable of which was the report of the UN Fact-Finding Mission on Gaza Conflict (Goldstone Report).

Palestinians have continued to be denied the right to justice and compensation through a series of Israeli legal and physical obstacles.

In this context, on 16 July 2012, the Israeli Knesset approved Amendment No. 8 to the Israeli Tort Law (State’s Liability) of 1952, which applies retroactively in regards to the Gaza Strip from 2005 onwards.

This amendment exempts the State of Israel of any liability arising from damages caused to a resident of an enemy territory during a ‘combat action’ or ‘military operation,’ thus exempting Israel of any liability for victims of the Israeli offensive in 2012 (“Operation Pillar of Defense”) and “Operation Cats Lead” in 2008-2009. Consequently, PCHR has not been able to file any compensation claim on behalf of victims of “Operation Pillar of Defense.”

In addition to the aforementioned amendment, Israeli authorities have worked on imposing monetary, legal and physical obstacles in the last year to close the door completely before the Palestinian victims to get their rights to Justice.

These obstacles include, but not limited to, preventing victims and witnesses from appearing before courts, preventing meetings between victims and their lawyers and imposing unbearable financial court guarantees.

Additionally, the Ministry of Defense has ignored complaints submitted by PCHR to initiate civil claims on behalf of victims.

For instance, in the period 2009-2012, PCHR submitted 1,046 complaints to the Compensation Officer of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, but it received 16 replies in regards to 26 cases only.

PCHR stresses the need to confront these challenges and overcome such obstacles that deny Palestinian victims their right to justice and remedy, and:

1- PCHR calls upon the Palestinian Authority to ensure that Palestine accedes to all international human rights and humanitarian law instruments.

PCHR calls for the immediate signing and ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court of 1998 as it is the major guarantee for the prosecution of suspected Israeli war criminals.

2- PCHR calls upon the UN General Assembly to transfer the Goldstone Report to the UN Security Council for referral to the International Criminal Court in accordance with Article 13(b) of the Rome Statute.

3- PCHR calls upon the High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions to fulfil their obligation to ensure the application of the Conventions, including extending the scope of their jurisdiction to prosecute suspected war criminals, regardless of the nationality of the perpetrator and the place of crime, and to pave the way for prosecuting suspected Israeli war criminals and end the longstanding impunity they have enjoyed.

4- PCHR calls upon the High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions to fulfil their obligation to ensure the application of the Conventions, including extending the scope of their jurisdiction to prosecute suspected war criminals, regardless of the nationality of the perpetrator and the place of crime, and to pave the way for prosecuting suspected Israeli war criminals and end the longstanding impunity they have enjoyed.

B'Tselem investigation: grave suspicion Ahmad Tazaz’ah was killed by Israeli soldiers using unlawful lethal force

On the morning of 31 October 2013, at about 5:30 AM, Ahmad Tazaz’ah, 20, who worked in a vegetable market, was hit in the chest by live ammunition. The ammunition was allegedly fired by an Israeli military force present in the market near the Palestinian town of Qabatiya, south of Jenin. Tazaz’ah was rushed to the Jenin government hospital. He was dead on arrival.

The account published in the Israeli daily Haaretz quoted the military’s response to the incident: "An IDF force arrested four Palestinians in the town, south-west of Jenin, after some 50 Palestinians threw stones at them. Troops present on the scene responded with tear gas and stun grenades".

Inquiries by B'Tselem field researcher ‘Atef Abu a-Rub found that on 31 October 2013, at about 3:00 AM, at least seven military vehicles entered Qabatiya as part of an arrest operation. The military vehicles left the town at around 5:00 AM, traveling north-west on the main road, toward Road 60. At around 5:15 AM, the vehicles passed near the Qabatiya market, which borders the main road about 2 kilometers from the town. Some 15 Palestinian youths who were at the market at the time began throwing stones at the vehicles as they went by.

According to eyewitness accounts, it was at that point that a few of the military vehicles stopped on the road across from the market and several soldiers got out. The soldiers stationed themselves across from the market, on the other side of the road, about 35 meters north of the market entrance. The soldiers fired tear-gas grenades and lobbed stun grenades at the youths, who persisted in throwing stones. Witnesses also said that they heard a few solitary shots of live ammunition.

About ten minutes later, at 5:25 AM, Ahmad Tazaz’ah approached the site of the clashes near the entrance to the market, and peeked out at the soldiers from the market entrance, where the fence that separates the road from the market ends. According to the eyewitness accounts, Tazaz’ah was immediately hit by a bullet to the chest. After he was hit, he ran a short distance back into the market and collapsed. Medical reports indicate that a live bullet penetrated Tazaz’ah’s chest between the second and third ribs, exiting through his back. Shortly after, the soldiers got back into the vehicles and drove off. The B'Tselem field researcher who came to the site of the shooting about two hours after the incident found three empty shells near where the soldiers had stood. The shells were taken by Palestinian security authorities.

Security cameras in the area of the market caught parts of the incident on

film. The video footage shows the military vehicles driving on the road near the market and the moment when Tazaz’ah was hit by the bullet. The footage also sheds light on the timing of the shooting.

Video 1: market interior, seconds after Tazaz’ah was hit (explicit images) Please note that the security camera clock was not yet changed to winter time.

Video 2: exterior of market, about ten minutes before Tazaz’ah was hit – the military vehicles are seen driving by in the background.

Video 3: exterior of market, at the time Tazaz’ah was hit.

Tazaz’ah was rushed in a private car to the hospital in Jenin. According to hospital records, Tazaz’ah arrived there at 5:45 AM. He was already dead.

Tazaz’ah was rushed in a private car to the hospital in Jenin. According to hospital records, Tazaz’ah arrived there at 5:45 AM. He was already dead.

Ahmad Tazaz’ah's uncle, Tamer Tazaz’ah, 26, works in a vegetable store at the entrance to the Qabatiya market. B'Tselem's field researcher took down his description of events from the time the military vehicles arrived at the market:

Ahmad and I were standing near the store at the entrance to the market when the soldiers stopped near the market. At first, the soldiers fired stun grenades and tear-gas grenades in the direction of the market. They were standing about 30 meters away from the market. The young men kept throwing stones. I tried to convince Ahmad to stay with me, but he told me he wanted to go to his store so he’d be on hand for a vegetable order. I insisted, and asked him to stay and sit with me, but within a minute, he was gone. I then saw him at the entrance to his store. At that moment, I saw a young man standing on the fence that separates the market from the road, looking at the soldiers on the road.

I heard a live bullet being fired in the air, a warning shot that he's not allowed to stand there. The young man stepped back immediately. Ahmad went to the same spot, and approached the entrance to the market, where the fence ends. He was about 10-15 meters away from where I was standing. As soon as he got to the edge of the fence, I heard a shot. I didn't know what kind of bullet it was. Ahmad ran back, a distance of about 10 meters, and then collapsed on the ground. I thought he’d just tripped. I didn't realize he’d been injured. At that moment, I heard someone say he’d been hit, and I quickly ran over to see him, but the people who were standing there tried to keep me away. It was about 5:25 AM.

A few other young men and I picked up Ahmad. We got him into a car that was there and drove to the hospital. In the meantime I also called for an ambulance (emergency tel: 101). My cell phone shows I made that call at 5:28 AM.

According to B'Tselem's inquiries, the soldiers were not in any real danger during the incident. This gives rise to a grave suspicion that there was no justification for the use of live ammunition, let alone of aiming directly at Tazaz’ah's chest. Stone-throwing during arrest operations is a predictable and recurring scenario. The military must be prepared to handle such situations with crowd control weapons and without resorting to lethal force. The Israeli military's claim that the soldiers responded to the stone-throwing with stun- and tear-gas grenades is incompatible with Tazaz’ah's fatal injury from a live bullet to the chest, or with testimonies and other evidence found at the scene.

B'Tselem contacted the MAG Corps, demanding a criminal investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Additionally, B'Tselem turned to the IDF Spokesman's office, whose response stated that:

The MAG Corps requested the response of relevant entities to questions raised about a possible connection between the military's actions and the death of Ahmad Tazaz'ah. The findings provided were examined along with the details sent by B'Tselem. Consequently, the MAG Corps decided upon opening a "limited investigation". The inquiry that B’Tselem conducted of the incident determines with a high degree of certainty that Tazaz’ah was hit by live ammunition fired by the military. B’Tselem is aware that the Israeli security forces gave press briefings in which they presented a version of events whereby Tazaz’ah was injured prior to the clashes between the military and the stone-throwers. The military also informed the media that Palestinian authorities stated that Tazaz’ah had been killed in the course of an intra-Palestinian criminal incident.

These claims are incompatible with the overall evidence collected during the B’Tselem inquiry and the additional information that reached B’Tselem. The eyewitness accounts the B’Tselem field researcher recorded, the medical records of the Jenin government hospital and of the Red Crescent, along with the video footage of security cameras on site, all indicate Israeli military involvement in the shooting. The B’Tselem field researcher also checked the records at another hospital in Jenin, which by the IDF Spokesperson’s account to the press, is where Tazaz’ah was taken. The B’Tselem inquiry found that Tazaz’ah never came to that hospital. Furthermore, Palestinian security personnel B’Tselem approached to discuss the incident utterly rejected the claim that Tazaz’ah was killed in a criminal confrontation among Palestinians.

It is clear that B’Tselem’s inquiry and the existing evidence are sufficient to suggest Israeli military involvement in the death of Tazaz’ah. Consequently, in accordance with the investigative policy of the MAG Corps, a military police investigation must be launched immediately. A "limited investigation" does not adhere to the obligation to investigate every killing of a Palestinian civilian by the security forces, which is reiterated in the Turkel Commission report. B'Tselem will continue to promote an official Military Police investigation.

Family of martyr Habanin: We will prosecute the occupation authorities
Picture
Family of martyr Bashir Habanin, who was killed by the Israeli forces gunfire on Thursday night at Za'atara checkpoint, said it will prosecute the Israeli authorities for killing him. The martyr's father told PIC's correspondent: "The family will contact all human rights institutions in order to file a complaint against the occupation forces and to punish the perpetrators of this crime, which was committed in cold blood."

He added that at dawn on the day of the incident, the occupation forces stormed their house then questioned the family members and searched Bashir's personal belongings without informing them that he had had been killed at a military checkpoint.

For his part, Bashar Habanin, the martyr's brother, demanded the formation of a commission of inquiry to determine the circumstances of the martyrdom of his brother, and to prosecute the occupation forces, which killed Bashir in cold blood.

PHRC: IOF killing of two youths a war crime

Palestinian Human Rights Center (PHRC) expressed its deep concern at the killing of two Palestinians on Thursday evening at Israeli military checkpoints in the West Bank, considering it as a war crime. In an excessive use of force, on Thursday evening, 07 November 2013, Israeli occupation forces (IOF) killed two Palestinian civilians at Za'tara checkpoint, south of Nablus, and at the Container checkpoint, northeast of Bethlehem, in the West Bank, the center said in a statement on Friday.

PHRC is deeply concerned over these crimes, which further prove the use of excessive force by the IOF against Palestinian civilians in absolute disregard to the civilians’ lives, the center's statement added.

PHRC called upon the international community to take immediate and effective actions to put an end to such crimes and reiterated its call for the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 to fulfill their obligations under Article 1; i.e., to respect and to ensure respect for the Convention in all circumstances, and their obligation under Article 146 to prosecute persons alleged to commit grave breaches of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

These grave breaches constitute war crimes under Article 147 of the same Convention and Protocol (I) Additional to the Geneva Conventions, PCHR said.

Hundreds of mourners joined the funeral march that brought martyr Bashir Sami Hananin, 28, to his final resting place, calling for revenge against his killers.

The mourners called for activating resistance and to respond to the Israeli cold-blooded crimes against Palestinians.

IOF soldiers shot and killed Hananin from Nablus at the Zaatara checkpoint in the south of the northern West Bank city on Thursday evening, claiming he shot at Israeli soldiers using an air pistol.

Meanwhile, thousands participated in the funeral of Anas al-Atrash on Friday who was shot and killed by Israeli fire at Container checkpoint northeast of Bethlehem, in the second deadly shooting in 12 hours.

A number of masked gunmen fired in the air during the funeral, vowing to take revenge.

Violent confrontations erupted following the funeral, where Israeli soldiers fired tear gas bombs and rubber bullets at Palestinian protesters.

Israeli border guards shot and killed the Palestinian youth at Container checkpoint northeast of Bethlehem, claiming that he tried to stab a soldier.

Al-Atrash family charged that their son was killed in cold blood.

15 Palestinians died since the resumption of negotiations

A statistics report prepared by Quds Press International news agency showed that fifteen Palestinians died since the resumption of the negotiations, three months ago. The negotiation between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli occupation was resumed in Washington on July 30, for the first time after it had been frozen for three years. Yet the Israeli violations and attacks against Palestinian civilians and their properties and sanctities have continued.

The statistical report said that three Palestinians from the Jenin refugee camp died a few days after the resumption of the negotiating sessions, after being shot by Israeli forces.

The Israeli occupation forces continued killing and attacking the citizens and destroying the Palestinian properties, indifferent to the ongoing negotiating sessions. On August 26, the IOF special forces committed a massacre in the Qalandiya refugee camp in Ramallah, wounding about 20 Palestinians and killing 3 others.

After the resumption of the negotiations, the Israeli army assassinated 4 Palestinian resistance fighters from the Qassam Brigades.

Quds Press' report also pointed out that 3 Palestinian youths were killed during the last three months: Ahmed Tzazaah from the town of Qabatiya in Jenin after clashes with the occupation army, and Anas al-Atrash and Bashir Hababin after being shot by Israeli soldiers at Container and Za'atara checkpoints

The deliberate policy of medical neglect has also continued in the occupation jails and recently led to the death of patient captive Hassan al-Turabi from Nablus.

The PA ignored Palestinian factions' calls for ending the negotiations, in response to the occupation persistent crimes which led in the past three months to the death of 15 Palestinians, detention of hundreds and displacement of large numbers of residents from their homes that had been confiscated or demolished, not to mention the Judaization projects that continued in Jerusalem unabated and the settlement plans which included the construction of more than 1,700 new housing units.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights, based in Gaza, issued the following report denouncing the latest Israeli military violations leading to the killing of two Palestinians at military roadblocks in the occupied West Bank. Israeli Forces Use Excessive Force Killing 2 Palestinian Civilians at Military Checkpoints

In an excessive use of force, on Thursday evening, 07 November 2013, Israeli forces killed 2 Palestinian civilians at Za'tara checkpoint, south of Nablus, and the Container checkpoint, northeast of Bethlehem, in the West Bank.

According to investigations conducted by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), at approximately 18:00 on Thursday, 07 November 2013, Basheer Sami Salem Habnain, 29, from Marka village south of Jenin, was traveling in a taxi from Ramallah to Nablus.

When he became 20 meters far from Za'tara intersection, south of Nablus, he stepped down from the taxi and crossed the main road towards the other side.

He was carrying a box of fireworks, from which flares were unleashed. Soon, an Israeli soldier descended from a military observation tower and fired directly at Habnain, killing him with 7 bullets to the legs and thighs and an 8th one which entered the back and exited the chest.

Israeli forces kept the victim's body until 03:00 on Friday, 08 November 2013, when they handed the body to the Palestinian liaison department. The victim was a lecturer at the fashion department in Palestine Technical University (Kadoorie) in Tulkarm.

Israeli forces claimed that "Habnain was carrying a flare gun, from which he fired at soldiers, so the soldiers responded by firing at him, and he was instantly killed."

A video clip published on Youtube shows an Israeli soldiers descending from an Israeli military observation tower to the southeast of Za'tara checkpoint, and then firing at the area to the southwest of the checkpoint.

Another 2 soldiers are seen in the video clip coming from the checkpoint. Even according to the Israeli narrative, Israeli forces could have used less lethal means against the victims, such as arresting him.

In a similar crime, at approximately 21:30, Isma'il Fu'ad Refa'ei al-Atrash, 25, and his brother Anas, 23, arrived at the Container checkpoint, northeast of Bethlehem, traveling from Jericho to their home in Hebron.

They were traveling in a civilian car driven by Isma'il. When they arrived the checkpoint, Isma'il slowed down to cross road bumps. Anas opened the door, and once he stepped down, Israeli soldiers shot him dead with 2 bullets to the chest.

Israeli soldiers took Anas' body and put it in a plastic sac near the checkpoint. Residents of the area and a number of members of the victim's family arrived at the checkpoint and skirmishes erupted between them and Israeli soldiers.
Later, the family received Anas' body. Israeli forces claimed that "the young man attempted to stab a soldier, so the latter fired at him directly, killing him."

PCHR's field worker in Hebron reported that he was not able to obtain a statement from the victim's brother who was accompanying him during the attack, because the brother is suffering from a shock. PCHR will continue to investigate this crime.

PCHR is deeply concerned over these crimes, which further prove the use of excessive force by Israeli forces against the Palestinian civilians in disregard for the civilians’ lives.

Therefore, PCHR calls upon the international community to take immediate and effective actions to put an end to such crimes and reiterates its call for the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 to fulfill their obligations under Article 1; i.e., to respect and to ensure respect for the Convention in all circumstances, and their obligation under Article 146 to prosecute persons alleged to commit grave breaches of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

These grave breaches constitute war crimes under Article 147 of the same Convention and Protocol (I) Additional to the Geneva Conventions.
