Journalist hunger striker transferred to hospital
Picture
The journalist hunger striker Mohamed al-Qiq was transferred Thursday to Afula hospital after his health worsened, family sources revealed.

Al-Qiq’s wife told the PIC reporter that her husband’s health condition has seriously deteriorated in Israeli captivity and added that he is unable to move and started vomiting.

AL-Qiq is held in solitary confinement in spite of his difficult health condition, his wife pointed out.

His wife, who is also a journalist, appealed to international human rights institutions to intervene to save her husband’s life before it is too late.

Al-Qiq, a reporter who works for Saudi TV channel Almajd, was subjected to tough investigation for 20 days before being held in administrative detention which made him declare a hunger strike.

Meanwhile, dozens of Palestinian journalists organized Thursday morning a protest vigil in solidarity with al-Qiq who declared a hunger strike 37 days ago.

Representatives of the Palestinian Prisoners Society, the journalists syndicate, and Palestinian factions have participated in the vigil.

The participants held photos of the hunger striker and banners calling for his immediate release.

Health of detained Palestinian journalist deteriorating

The health condition of Palestinian journalist Muhammad al-Qiq, who has been on hunger strike for 36 days, has seriously deteriorated, his lawyer Ashraf Abu Snina said.

Al-Qiq started vomiting, his lawyer told the hunger striker’s family after meeting him Wednesday afternoon in Ramle prison hospital.

He is scheduled to be taken to Afula hospital, the lawyer added.

During the visit, al-Qiq affirmed to his lawyer that he is determined to continue his strike till his release.

Al-Qiq, 33, was arrested from his home in al-Khalil more than a month ago.

Al-Qiq, a reporter who works for Saudi TV channel Almajd, was subjected to tough investigation for 20 days before being held in administrative detention which made him declare a hunger strike.

A human rights group issued on Wednesday a report documenting Israeli violations against Palestinian journalists and press freedom in 2015.

The report stated that Israeli forces carried out nearly 600 violations against journalists in occupied Palestine since the beginning of 2015.

During the reported period, Israeli forces killed two journalists and shot and injured 190 others, while 85 journalists were arrested including a foreigner.

PFLP condemns Palestinian Authorities Crackdown on Protesters and Journalists
Picture
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) strongly condemned the Palestinian Authorities crackdown against protesters and journalists in the Palestinian interim capital Ramallah.

On Friday December 25 security forces of the Al-Fatah dominated Palestinian Authority violently attacked protesters and journalists who participated in a protest march in Ramallah. The demonstration that should march from Ramallah to Beit El was organized by both Palestinian National and Islamic organizations.

The PFLP issued a communique, emphasizing that the security forces attacked the participants in the march, beating marchers, journalists, and media workers, causing injuries and attempting to prevent coverage of the attack. This crackdown went as far as confiscating journalists’ cameras. The PFLP stressed that it considers the crackdown and all of its elements as evidence of the role of the Palestinian Authority in working against and suppressing the aspirations of the Palestinian people to escalate the uprising against the Zionist occupation and oppression.

The Front stressed that the crackdown is inconsistent with national principles and reiterated its call for an immediate end to the Palestinian Authorities security cooperation between the PA and Israeli occupation forces.

The PFLP also reiterated that the Palestinian Authority once and for all and at once needs to end the burden of the Oslo Accords on the Palestinian people on political, security and economic levels. Palestinian security agencies must be converted to provide defense for the Palestinian people and to confront attacks of the occupation and settlers, instead of cracking down on Palestinians who protest against the occupier, noted the PFLP.

The Al-Fatah led Palestinian Authority has repeatedly promised to end its security cooperation with Israel. Usually such promises were made during negotiations with Israel and/or when Al-Fatah and the PA were facing strong domestic opposition. None of such promises have ever been converted into tangible measures.

Al-Fatah and the PA have also been accused to use the security cooperation with Israel to crack down on and imprison members of opposition parties, such as PFLP Secretary-General Ahmad Sa’adat, among many others. With regard to the Palestinian Authorities stance on a free press it is noteworthy that MADA, in 2014, reported that over 80% of Palestinian journalists self-censor.

Palestinian family pushes for releasing detained journalist
Picture
A Palestinian Family called for immediately releasing their hunger-striking relative Muhammad al-Qeiq, held in Israeli lock-ups, and revealing his condition before it is too late.

A PIC news reporter said the family of Palestinian journalist Muhammad al-Qeiq appealed, during a press conference, to the Prisoners Committee, the Palestinian Prisoners Society, the Journalists Syndicate, and the International Red Cross, among other human rights organizations, to urgently intervene and work on releasing their son.

Lawyer Ashraf Abu Sneina quoted hunger-striking al-Qeiq as stating at the Ofer Court that he has been prevented from family visits for 32 days, during which he has been starving in solitary lock-downs.

Al-Qeiq reportedly spoke out against the apathy maintained by human rights groups and activists, adding that no single person or party visited him or tried to keep tabs on his health condition and needs.

Ex-prisoner Khader Adnan called for mobilizing support for al-Qeiq.

The detainee’s wife, journalist Fayhaa Shalash, said her husband has entered his 32nd day of hunger-strike in protest at being arbitrarily incarcerated in Israeli jails.

According to the wife, the fact that her husband was convicted because he asserted his own rights to the freedom of speech and the freedom of press stands in sharp contrast to all international laws and treaties.

“So far, no single piece of information has been released on the place and conditions in which my husband is being jailed,” the wife further stated, voicing her concern over her husband’s unknown condition.

She added that a protest tent is to be pitched in front of al-Qeiq’s family home until his release.

Israeli soldiers shot and injured, Friday, 22 Palestinians near the western entrance of Silwad town, east of the central West Bank city of Ramallah; seven of the wounded were shot with "Toto" live rounds; one of them suffered a serious injury.

Medical sources said seven Palestinians were shot with the illegal Toto live rounds, which detonate upon impact causing larger and more extensive damage, and that most of them were shot in their lower extremities.

The soldiers also fired rubber-coated steel bullets, sponge-tipped bullets and gas bombs, targeting Palestinian journalists, wounding Palestine TV reporter Raghda Atma, while many journalists suffered the effects of tear gas inhalation.

The invasion and clashes took place after the soldiers attacked hundreds of Palestinians, holding a protest demanding Israel to allow the transfer of the body of Anas Hammad, who was killed last week, back to his family for proper burial ceremonies.

Clashes break out as IOF suppresses Friday marches
Picture
Violent clashes broke out Friday afternoon between local youths and Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) across the West Bank.

In al-Khalil, clashes erupted after Friday prayers in Ras al-Joura town, north of the city, when Israeli forces suppressed a peaceful march that was organized in the area to mark the 28th anniversary of Hamas’s inception.

The participants chanted slogans calling for continuing the Jerusalem Intifada.

49 Violations against Journalists in November
Picture
Palestinian media sources documented 49 violations committed by Israeli occupation forces, against journalists in the Palestinian territories, during this past November.

The army continues its violations against the journalists' crews with both live fire and rubber-coated metal bullets, tear gas and stun grenades, physical assaults and detentions.

All these followed methods aiming to constrict the media coverage of the Israeli crimes against Palestinians.

Al Ray reported that, according to the records, last month witnessed a peak in Israeli violations against journalists, breaching articles of international humanitarian law which uphold the freedom of expression.

The records pointed out that the number of injuries among journalists from live and rubber bullets, tear gas, and beatings amounted to 21 cases.

It also documented 11 kidnappings and 17 violations against media institutions.

Journalist Qeiq still barred from seeing his lawyer
Picture
The Israeli prison authority has issued an order preventing journalist Mohamed al-Qeiq, 33, from meeting his lawyer for another two days, according to the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS).

Lawyer Jawad Bulos, head of the PPS legal unit, stated Sunday that a hearing would be held next Tuesday at the military appeal court to look into a request filed by the defense asking to revoke a verdict barring prisoner Qeiq from seeing his lawyer.

Prisoner Qeiq started an open-ended hunger strike about 12 days ago in al-Jalama jail in protest at his exposure to maltreatment by Israeli interrogators and preventing him from seeing his lawyer since his detention on November 21.

Israel shuts down 3rd West Bank radio station
Picture
The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) at dawn Sunday raided and shut down a popular Palestinian radio station in an attempt to further escalate tension and quell anti-occupation activism in the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli occupation army raided the office of Radio Dream in the southern occupied West Bank city of al-Khalil, confiscating the radio’s broadcasting equipment and shutting it down.

Live snapshots posted by Palestinian users on social media show the occupation soldiers as standing outside the premises.

The images also show a damaged door and equipment scattered on the floor.

In another image, a printed directive signed by Israeli officials can be seen, in which the station is ordered to remain closed until May 26, 2015.

Observers said the letter that is dated November 26, 2015, is most likely referring to May 26, 2016.

The Israeli military claimed that the radio station was closed due to ongoing “incitement.”

Radio Dream is the third radio station that has been targeted in recent weeks after being accused of spreading incitement against the Israeli occupation.

The Israeli occupation army also threatened to shut down the One and Nas West Bank radio stations in case national chants and slogans are broadcast.

Nas FM received a notice from the civil administration stating that "part of its broadcasts regularly airs inciting remarks calling for harming citizens and soldiers."

"Broadcasting such remarks violates the law of incitement," the notice added.

"Before taking all measures according to the law, closing down the radio station and confiscating its equipment, we are writing to you to warn and demand you to stop broadcasting remarks inciting to violence," it warned.

Cameraman Injured, Many Suffer Effects Of Teargas Inhalation, In Bil’in
Picture
Israeli soldiers attacked, Friday, the weekly nonviolent protest, carried out by Palestinians, Israeli and international peace activists in Bil’in village, near the central West Bank city of Ramallah. A Palestinian cameraman was injured, and many suffered the effects of teargas inhalation.

The residents and activists marched from the center of the village, chanting for the liberation of Palestine, the protection of Jerusalem and the holy sites in the occupied city.

The protesters carried Palestinian flags, and called for the release of all political prisoners, held by Israel.

They also marched marking the International Day for Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

Israeli soldiers, stationed on the main entrance of the village, started firing gas bombs on the protesters, in an attempt to prevent them from advancing towards Palestinian olive orchards.

Many soldiers also hide behind olive trees, and fired several rubber-coated steel bullets, and concussion grenades.

Palestinian activist and cameraman, Hamdi Abu Rahma, was injured with a rubber-coated steel bullet, while many locals, Israeli and international peace activists suffered the effects of tear gas inhalation.

The attack led to clashes between the soldiers and dozens of local youths; the army fire more gas bombs and concussion grenades, and the youths hurled stones on them.

Bil’in is a leading village in creative nonviolent resistance against the Israeli occupation, the Annexation Wall that was deemed illegal by the International Court in its advisory ruling, Israel’s illegal colonies in occupied Palestine and the ongoing violations against the Palestinians, their homes and lands, and holy sites.

Israel To Coordinate With Google, YouTube, To Censor Palestinian Videos Of Conflict
Picture
The Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister, Member of Knesset Tzipi Hotovely, held meetings this week with representatives of YouTube and Google, to find ways of cooperating to censor Palestinian videos from occupied Palestine, videos she dubbed as “inciting violence and terrorism.”

Israeli daily Maariv said Hotovely will be working with Google and YouTube officials in a joint mechanism that will be in charge of “monitoring and preventing” any publication of materials deemed by Tel Aviv to be “inflammatory.”

Hotovely announced in a Hebrew-only press release that she met with YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, and Google’s Director of Public Policy, Jennifer Oztzistzki, at Google’s Silicon Valley Offices.

Hotovely said that she received a comprehensive review mechanism for companies to monitor the films that allegedly incite violence, claiming that the supposed ‘incitement videos’ drive young children to go out and stab: "The attacks daily in Israel are the result of youths and children incited by the education system and the social networks, this is a daily war of incitement."

She said that Google agreed to strengthen the bilateral relations with Israel’s Foreign Ministry, and build a mechanism of “collaborative work” that would make both parties partners in monitoring the published materials and censoring them.

The Israeli move comes amidst escalating tension in occupied Palestine, and a large number of videos, including those showing Israeli soldiers and officers killing Palestinians execution-style after injuring them, and many videos that in general highlight the suffering of the Palestinian people, living under the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine.

The Israeli coordination with Google and YouTube has very serious implications, and many journalists have spoken out in opposition, saying it is a direct assault on the Freedom of the Press.

All foreign journalists who report in the Occupied Territories are required to register with the Israeli military, and any footage that they film is required to go through the Israeli Military Censor’s office before it can be released.

With the recent advances in technology, many Palestinians and other civilians have been able to post videos uncensored online.

The Israeli government has frequently voiced its discontent with this development, and have worked to find ways to continue to censor videos coming out of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

IOA confiscates 100 copies of Palestinian book
Picture
The Israeli Occupation Authorities (IOA) have confiscated at al-Awja border crossing 100 copies of “Palestinian Prisoners.. Pains and Hopes” book by the Palestinian writer Abdul Naser Farwana.

Farwana affirmed to Quds Press that 100 copies of his book were seized at the Israeli-controlled al-Awja crossing that links between occupied Palestine and Egypt.

The 100 confiscated copies were among a consignment of various books to be delivered to Egypt, he clarified.

The Israeli authorities informed the transport company that the book, which was published by the Arab League, contains prohibited substances.

Heavy fine and punitive measures were imposed on the transport company, he added.

“Palestinian Prisoners.. Pains and Hopes” mainly sheds light on Israeli violations and crimes against Palestinian prisoners held behind Israeli bars, Farwana underlined, pointing out that the book introduction paper was written by the Secretary-General of the Arab League Nabil al-Arabi.

The prisoners and ex-prisoners committee has warned of the Israeli measure as it raises concerns over freedom of expression and publication.

Journalist Mohamed Qeiq undergoes interrogation in Jalama prison
Picture
Palestinian journalist Mohamed al-Qeiq has been subjected, since his arrest last Saturday, to daily interrogation by Israeli officers at the Jalama detention center near Jenin city, according to his family.

His wife said an Israeli court on Tuesday extended the detention of her husband for 15 days, affirming that he had been unable to see his lawyer since Saturday for alleged security reasons.

His wife appealed to human rights groups and media institutions to intervene to have her husband released, pointing out that he was arrested for his media work.

The Israeli occupation forces had kidnapped journalist Qeiq, who works for al-Majd satellite channel, four days ago during a violent dawn raid on his home in Ramallah and confiscated his laptop and cellphones belonging to him and his wife.

WAFA and B'Tselem Correspondents Assaulted in Hebron
Picture
Israeli forces manning a military checkpoint, set up near al-Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron, assaulted two correspondents working for WAFA news agency and B’Tselem, the Israeli human rights center.

WAFA correspondent, Jwed Tamimi, and B’Tselem correspondent, Manal Da’na, were both assaulted and roughly handled by Israeli soldiers after they crossed through a checkpoint placed near the Ibrahimi Mosque, reported Tamimi.

Tamimi said Israeli army forces detained them for about 30 minutes after they crossed the checkpoint, where they were roughly handled and shoved by soldiers, and prevented from reaching their destination.

He noted that they were on their way to al- Ibrahimieh School, near the Ibrahimi Mosque, in order to cover activities marking the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which was adopted on November 20, 1989.

During October of 2015, Israeli army forces committed a total of 1,122 assaults against both males and female journalists in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, according to a story issued by the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms on November 22, 2015.

These attacks, according to WAFA, constitute a clear violation of international law and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Palestinian journalists have the right to cover events according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights article Number 19, which states “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

Since early October 2015, Israeli army forces escalated their assaults against Palestinians across the West Bank and Gaza Strip, due to ongoing clashes and tension between Palestinians and Israeli police and army, as a result of Israel’s repeated assaults against al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem.
