Israel has recorded 1,055 new cases of coronavirus since midnight, the Health Ministry said Wednesday evening, just hours after Health Minister Yuli Edelstein warned that a failure bring down the high number of daily infections would lead to a new lockdown within days.

The number of nationwide cases since the beginning of the pandemic is now at 43,668 and the death toll at 375. Two people have succumbed to the disease since midnight.

There are currently 22,704 people battling the virus with 195 in serious condition with 56 of them on ventilators; In total 547 people being treated in hospitals; Slight drop in percentage of positive tests

The Health Ministry said Wednesday that 1,573 people were confirmed to have contracted coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

Four more people have died from the virus bringing the total number of fatalities from COVID-19 to 375.

There are currently 22,704 people battling the virus with 195 in serious condition. There are 56 people on ventilators.

Positive results from testing on Tuesday, dropped to 5.7% from 6% though this is still seen as a very high percentage by health officials.

The government had decided not to extend the closure imposed on the ultra-Orthodox city of Beitar Ilit despite the continued increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases detected there.

One in four tests for coronavirus is found to be positive, according to the Center for information and Knowledge.

There are at least 680 residents currently battling the virus, constituting more than 1% of residents. Only four other cities (Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Bnei Brak and Ashdod) have more cases of coronavirus.

Thousands of protesters try to break into PM's residence in Jerusalem

The demonstrators carrying torches had to be pulled away from the gate by the police, resulting in clashes between law enforcement officials and the protestors, who called on Netanyahu to resign; rally meant to coincide with The Storming of the Bastille

Thousands of protesters carrying torches, on Tuesday scuffled with police in front of Prime Minister's Residence in Jerusalem and tried to break into the compound. video

The "Black Flags" demonstration began in the evening hours in response to police's removal of tents set up by anti-corruption activists outside the premier's residence. The demonstrators have staged a sit-in outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official residence in Jerusalem for the past month, calling on him to resign while facing corruption charges.

The protestors were waving black flags, which they say symbolize the death of Israel's democracy during Netanyahu's tenure as Israeli leader, and shouting, "Bibi, go home" and "This is our country, no Netanyahu's".

Many held posters, saying "You are detached. We are fed up," or saying there is "no way" a politician under indictment can be prime minister.

Demonstrators, defying orders to maintain social distancing requirements, chanted slogans, blew horns and threw water bottles at the police.

The activists at some point tried to storm the residence but were dragged away by police officers, resulting in scuffles.

Amir Haskel, a former Israeli air force general and one of the leaders of the protest, said the protest is meant to coincide with The Storming of the Bastille in Paris in 1789.

"Today, 231 years ago, the French Revolution broke out with a motto: 'Liberty, Equality, Fraternity'" he wrote on Twitter. "We seek to add to that: morality and justice."

Netanyahu has seen his popularity drop in recent weeks as he comes under criticism from a series of directions. A loose-knit movement has held a number of demonstrations saying that Netanyahu is unfit to lead at a time when he is on trial. Others have taken to the streets to protest a worsening economic crisis caused by the coronavirus.

In addition, a rally marking nine nears since the start social justice protests in the summer of 2011, took place at Charles Clore Park in Tel Aviv. Around 400 people gathered at the part ahead of the protest, organized by Daphni Leef, one of the organizers of the July 2011 demonstrations.

Health authorities report almost as many infections in July as March and April combined; if trend continues, number of cases set to double every 12 days; 177 patients in serious condition - double the number from a week ago

Israel saw 1,681 new cases of coronavirus in the previous 24 hours, the Health Ministry said Tuesday morning, marking the second time in a week the country has reported a record number of daily infections since the pandemic began.

According to the ministry's National Coronavirus Information and Knowledge Center, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is expected to double every 12 days with the current infection rate.

There are now 177 patients in serious condition, with 55 people on ventilators. A total of 21,118 people are currently battling the virus in Israel.

Three more people succumbed to COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the national death toll to 368.

Since the start of July, another 15,525 people have been infected with the virus, almost as many as the total number of infections in March and April combined.

According to the Health Ministry, the cities with most new cases reported over the past week were Bnei Brak with 693 new cases, Tel Aviv with 648, and Ashdod with 337.

Health Ministry Deputy Director-General Prof. Itamar Grotto told Ynet on Tuesday that the government is hoping to drastically reduce the number of daily cases in order to avoid a nationwide lockdown, He said that the rise in seriously ill patients - which has doubled in a week - is of great concern.

On Monday, the Knesset's coronavirus committee overturned a government decision to keep swimming pools and gyms closed, citing a lack of evidence that they are a major source of infection.

Grotto said, however, that gyms would again be closed in a revised government decision.

For the first time, Israel sees over 20,000 active coronavirus patients

Health authorities report 1,221 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours, a relatively low virus infection rate in comparison with previous days

Some 20,251 active cases of the coronavirus were reported in Israel as of Monday afternoon, the highest such tally since the onset of the epidemic in the country, bringing the total number of cases since the beginning of the outbreak to 39,871.

Out of the active cases, 160 are in serious condition and 51 people are on ventilators.

No new deaths were reported and the country's virus-related fatalities remain at 364.

Health authorities reported 1,221 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours, 611 of them since midnight.

In addition, 3.9% of test results returned positive - the lowest such figure since last Wednesday.

Among the Israeli communities with the highest number of infections in the past week are Jerusalem with 1,224 cases, Tel Aviv with 584, Bnei Brak with 553, Beitar-Illit with 336, Ashdod with 296, Petah Tikva with 239, Lod with 207, Rishon Lezion with 2012, and Beit Shemesh with 200 new confirmed cases.

Earlier on Monday, Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz called on the government to impose a 10-day nationwide lockdown to stop the rapid spread of coronavirus.

In an interview with Ynet, the energy minister said that he recommends "breathable” closure when it would still be possible for people to go to work.

He added that being connected to the rest of the world is “essential to the economy," referring to Israel's omission from the list of countries with a low COVID-19 infection rate. The omission means Israeli visitors are banned from entering Europe.

Israeli police break up anti-Netanyahu protest in Jerusalem

Video footage shows city officials and police officers tearing down banners and tents while tussling with demonstrators, who have staged a sit-in outside PM's official residence for the past month, wounding five of them  video video

Israeli police and Jerusalem municipal officials scuffled with protesters demonstrating against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday as officers dismantled tents set up by the demonstrator's outside the premier's residence.

The demonstrators have staged a sit-in outside Netanyahu's official residence in Jerusalem for the past month, calling on him to resign while facing corruption charges. They said police used excessive force to dismantle the sit-in while opposition politicians decried the move as a restriction of free expression.

Video footage from the scene appeared to show city officials and police officers tearing down banners and removing chairs and tents while tussling with demonstrators. At least five protesters were lightly wounded, with one needing a medical treatment at a hospital.

Jerusalem city hall said in a statement that the municipality had removed the protesters' equipment for a second consecutive day because it "was placed without a permit and harms public order."

Amir Haskel, a former Israeli air force general and one of the leaders of the protest, told Army Radio that the demonstrators were undeterred. "There's no chance that we're moving from here," he said. "You can't ignore the fact that we've been here 35 days."

Last month, Haskel was arrested by police for allegedly holding a protest without a permit, but was later released without charges. He denounced his detention as an attempt to stifle the protest, which has grown in numbers since his arrest.

On Friday, several thousand people gathered outside Netanyahu's residence, calling for his resignation.

Separately, thousands demonstrated on Saturday in downtown Tel Aviv, protesting what is widely seen as Netanyahu's failure to address economic woes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

After Monday's dismantling of the sit-in, opposition leader Yair Lapid wrote on Twitter that "Netanyahu has lost public trust, and with it the courage to stand before citizens who tell him the truth daily - that he's failed."

The incident came a day after public opinion polls showed dismal approval of Netanyahu's handling of the pandemic. A Channel 13 survey found that 75% of respondents were unsatisfied by the government's performance, while a similar poll by public broadcaster Kan showed that 85% were dissatisfied.
