Israeli regime mulling more strikes on Syria: Report

Smoke and fire fill the skyline over the Syrian capital, Damascus, after an Israeli airstrike hit the Jamraya Research Center, May 5, 2013.
An Israeli official has hinted that the Tel Aviv regime is mulling more strikes on Syria, a report says.
On May 5, Syria said the Israeli regime had carried out an airstrike targeting a research center in a suburb of Damascus, following heavy losses inflicted upon al-Qaeda-affiliated groups by the Syrian army. According to Syrian media reports, the strike hit the Jamraya Research Center.
On Wednesday, the New York Times quoted the Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, that if Syria “reacts by attacking Israel,” Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will risk forfeiting his government “for Israel will retaliate.”
The Tel Aviv regime has made no comments on the remarks.
Mark Regev, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has said, “We’re not going to comment on the story.”
The May 5 Israeli aggression was Tel Aviv’s second strike on Syria in three days. The Jamraya facility was also targeted in an Israeli airstrike in January.
On May 9, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad said Damascus would “respond immediately” to any new Israeli act of aggression.
Miqdad categorically rejected Western media reports that the Tel Aviv regime had targeted weapons bound for the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah.
The Israeli official also claimed that Tel Aviv had so far ‘refrained’ from intervening in the internal affairs of Syria.
Western powers and their regional allies including the Israeli regime, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are partners in supporting the militant groups in Syria.
Turmoil has gripped Syria for over two years, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the foreign-sponsored militancy.

Clashes erupt between Israeli troops, Palestinians in West Bank

Israeli forces have clashed with dozens of Palestinian protesters following the Israeli army’s decision to allow illegal settlers to install a settlement outpost in the occupied West Bank.
Clashes broke out between scores of Palestinian youths and Israeli soldiers in the city of Beit Sahour, east of Bethlehem, on Sunday. Israeli troops fired stun grenades at the demonstrators to disperse the crowd.
Meanwhile, Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki has called for the immediate cessation of settlement expansion activities in the West Bank, saying such expansionist moves undermine efforts to revive the so-called peace talks.
"For us, stopping settlement construction is vital, important and essential to really sit down and talk about the subject of negotiations," Maliki said.
He added, "Without this, it will be difficult, if not impossible to find a Palestinian interested in sitting down and talking with the Israelis.”
"It is not a Palestinian condition. It is a requirement by the international community," the senior Palestinian official pointed out.
The UN and most countries regard the Israeli settlements as illegal because the territories were captured by Israel in a war in 1967 and are hence subject to the Geneva Conventions, which forbids construction on occupied lands.
The presence and continued expansion of these settlements has created a major obstacle for the efforts to establish peace in the Middle East.
Israel agreed to freeze settlement construction under the Roadmap for Peace plan in 2002. But it has failed to comply with that commitment despite repeated and widespread international condemnation.
More than half a million Israelis live in over 120 illegal settlements built since Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds in 1967.

Israel tanks, bulldozers invade northeast Gaza Strip

Israeli tanks and bulldozers have carried out an incursion into northeastern areas of the Gaza Strip, local sources say.
A number of Israeli tanks and bulldozers infiltrated into Palestinian-owned lands in the town of Beit Hanoun on Monday.
The Israeli forces also entered Beit Hanoun last week, razing Palestinian farmlands and forcing the farmers to leave the area.
Israel has carried out a number of incursions into Gaza in the past weeks, including three airstrikes on the southern town of Khan Younis and near the town of Rafah in southern Gaza in late April.
The attacks are in violation of a ceasefire which brought an end to Israel’s eight-day war against Palestinians last November.
According to Israeli Walla website, the Israeli army is preparing to launch Operation Pillar of Defense II against the Gaza Strip in a bid to eliminate Hamas resistance movement.
The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine has also warned against an imminent Israeli attack against the besieged coastal enclave.
The group’s military wing, Al-Quds Brigades, has been holding military exercises in order to prepare its members for a possible Israeli aggression, the movement said.
Israel launched the so-called Operation Pillar of Defense I against Gaza in November 2012. Over 160 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed and about 1,200 others were injured and more than 1,500 targets were hit across the Palestinian enclave during the eight-day war.
In retaliation, Palestinian resistance fighters fired rockets and missiles into Israeli cities, killing at least five Israelis. The offensive ended after Egypt brokered a truce between Hamas and Israel.
According to a Hamas spokesman, Israel's eight-day aggression against the Gaza Strip caused more than USD 1.2 billion in direct and indirect damages.
IOF raids northern Gaza
Israeli occupation forces (IOF) escorted four bulldozers into eastern Beit Hanun in northern Gaza Strip on Monday. Well-informed security sources said that the IOF force bulldozed citizens’ cultivated land lots after advancing more than 200 meters into the area.
IOF forces invade Palestinian land in Gaza Strip on semi daily basis and bulldoze land in violation of the calm agreement signed with Palestinian resistance factions in Cairo under Egyptian patronage last November.

Israeli occupation forces (IOF) stormed Beit Ummar village, north of Al-Khalil, at dawn Monday and broke into the home of a municipal council member.
Eyewitnesses told the PIC reporter that the soldiers forced their way into the home of Nasri Sabarna and searched it.
