Israeli settler attack lands 80-year old farmer in hospital

Picture
A Palestinian elderly farmer who was attacked by a group of settlers while working his lands near Tulkarem Friday remains in the hospital and will likely require surgery, according to medical sources.

Hasan Barhoush, age 80, was working in his field in the village of Kafr al-Labad, as he has done for decades, when a group of settlers came out of Enav settlement and began to beat and kick him. He was taken to Thabit Hospital in Tulkarem, where he is being treated for multiple injuries.

Israeli settler attacks on unarmed Palestinians are frequent, and are rarely prosecuted. Two weeks ago a Palestinian man was badly beaten by an Israeli settlement security guard in the village of Susiya, in the southern West Bank.

Since that attack, settlers in the northern and southern West Bank have cut down more than 100 Palestinian olive trees, settlers near Nablus smashed the windows of Palestinian cars, and settlers began expanding a settlement near Tulkarem.

In addition, a new report has been released showing that Israel has allocated 99.3% of the land in the West Bank for settlement expansion, in direct violation of international laws, treaties and signed agreements with the Palestinians.

Earlier this month, a group of settlers attacked a Palestinian woman in Jerusalem, tearing off her head cover and shouting insults. In response, and Israeli officer posted on his Facebook page “It's a shame the Arab whore didn't die.”

No arrests have been made of any of the settlers who attacked Palestinians in the last month.

IOF soldiers patrol Jenin city, nearby villages

Picture
Israeli occupation forces (IOF) patrolled the city of Jenin at dawn Sunday and three nearby villages, local sources reported. They said that IOF soldiers in a number of army jeeps stormed the city and stationed at Marah suburb before combing Jaberiyat area and Sikka street.

Similar combing operations were reported in Maythalon, Sanur, and Jaba villages.

Locals reported on Saturday clashes between those forces and young men in Jaba, south of Jenin city, after storming it.

They said that the soldiers used teargas against the youths causing breathing problems to a number of citizens in nearby homes including women and children.

Violent clashes in W. Bank as Palestinians mark 37th land day

Palestinians plant olive saplings on land day

Thousands of Palestinians in different areas of the West Bank and Jerusalem held marches and events to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the land day, amid sporadic clashes with the Israeli occupation forces (IOF). In Bethlehem city, clashes broke out near Rachel's Tomb military checkpoint between young men and Israeli troops. Several tear gas injuries were reported among the protestors.

Member of the popular committee against settlement Mohamed Berejih said in a press statement that "they came to the checkpoint that separates Bethlehem from the Palestinian capital Jerusalem in order to say to the occupation that they are still clinging to their land and will not give up their right to live in dignity and have self-determination."

For his part, Palestinian lawmaker Mustafa Al-Barghouthi said that the Palestinians in the West Bank and Jerusalem are experiencing today the same situation that has happened in the past in the 1948 occupied lands, stressing that their protests on the land day reflected national unity.

In a related context, the Palestinians in Khader town south of Bethelehm planted on the occasion of the land day about 1,000 olive seedlings, particularly in the Showshahla village that was ethnically cleansed by the Zionist Jews in 1967.

According to the Palestinian information center (PIC) reporter, violent clashes took place between young men and Israeli soldiers in Khader town during which more than 10 Palestinians suffered injuries.

One Israeli soldier was also wounded when a military jeep chased the protestors and suddenly overturned in the events.

In Ramallah, Palestinian young men clashed with Israeli troops at Qalandiya checkpoint north of Jerusalem after they started a march from Qalandiya refugee camp.

Palestinian and foreign activists along with Burin villagers were able to plant dozens of olive saplings in the settlement-torn village despite the intensive presence of Israeli troops around them.

Olive saplings were also planted in Bab Ashams village in east Jerusalem and the wall-separated village of Jayyous area in Qalqiliya.

The IOF also violently attacked a peaceful march held to celebrate the land day in Beit Ummar village north of Al-Khalil city, and detained and physically assaulted a press cameraman.

Israeli troops open fire at protesters as Palestinians mark Land Day

Picture
Clashes erupted Saturday between Palestinians and Israeli forces in the northern West Bank village of Jayyus east of Qalqiliya, witnesses said.

Eyewitnesses told Ma’an that hundreds of Palestinians gathered in agricultural lands west of Jayyus to plant trees commemorating Land Day before Israeli troops stormed the area.

The soldiers fired tear-gas canisters at the Palestinians who in return hurled stones at the soldiers. Dozens were hurt as they inhaled tear gas, according to onlookers.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said security forces were responding to rock-hurling, and she said two soldiers were lightly injured by rocks. She was unaware of any Palestinian casualties.

Israeli forces have deployed heavily across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem since Friday preparing to disperse demonstrations in Palestinian cities and villages in commemoration of Land Day.

In Ramallah in the central West Bank, young Palestinians clashed with Israeli forces near Qalandiya checkpoint which separates Ramallah and Jerusalem.

A Ma’an reporter said Israeli soldiers heavily fired tear-gas canisters and rubber-coated bullets, hurting several Palestinians.

In Bethlehem, activists commemorated Land Day near Rachel's Tomb raising Palestinian flags. Lawmaker Mustafa Barghouthi, secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, joined the commemoration.

Land Day, Barghouthi said, should not be restricted to March 30, as “each day for our people is a land day during our battle with the occupation who steals our land and our future. The only way to respond to the plots against our land is by escalating popular resistance across homeland.”

Violent clashes erupted in al-Khader south of Bethlehem, where youths threw stones at Israeli soldiers, who fired tear gas and live ammunition.

Red Crescent medics said dozens from the town were injured and two people were hospitalized.

An Israeli military vehicle overturned in an alley of al-Khader while chasing protesters and a soldier was injured, witnesses said.

In the Gaza Strip Palestinians commemorated Land Day near Erez crossing in the northern area and in Rafah in the south.

A demonstrator was shot and injured by Israeli fire in Rafah, Israeli media reported citing Palestinian sources.

Speaking to a Ma'an reporter, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said the Palestinians should count on resistance and stick to it until "all Palestine is liberated."

For his part, senior Islamic Jihad leader Khader Habib said "armed struggle is the means to liberate the Palestinian land."

Facts on the ground, he added, which the Israeli occupation is trying to impose, are unacceptable and the Palestinian people won't yield to that.

Walid al-Awad, a member of the politburo of the Palestinian People's Party, said the Palestinian people wouldn't accept land confiscation and Judaisation of Palestinian sites.

Meanwhile, member of the politburo of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine Jamil Muzhir urged the international community to implement internationally approved resolutions.

Eyewitnesses told the PIC that IOF soldiers quelled another march to the east of Yatta village to commemorate Land Day and to protest the Israeli occupation authorities’ settlement policy.

They said that large numbers of IOF soldiers encircled the marchers, who were hoisting photos and posters against the settlement drive and Israeli racist practices against Palestinian farmers and land owners.

Similar scuffles erupted at Qalandiya checkpoint in the West Bank city of Ramallah, where Israeli forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters. Several protesters were also wounded in the incident.

March 30 is commemorated every year because of a deadly incident on that day in 1976 in which Israeli troops killed six Palestinians during a protest against the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian lands.

Jihad movement calls on Egypt to pressure occupation to abide by ceasefire

Picture
The Islamic Jihad movement called on Egypt, the mediator of the truce agreement between the Palestinian resistance in Gaza and the Israeli occupation, to pressure the Israeli authorities to implement the agreement's terms, which ended the last Israeli aggression on Gaza in November.

Sheikh Khader Habib, a leader in the movement, said in a press statement that the Israeli decision to the limit down the fishing area in Gaza Sea from six to three miles is a violation of the ceasefire agreement.

Habib considered the Israeli decision as a systematic policy to drive fishermen further from them and establish new boundaries for the siege, urging the Egyptian mediator to pressure the occupation to commit to the terms of the truce.

In related matter, Palestinian fishermen confirmed that the Israeli forces forced them on Saturday morning to pull back to three miles after reducing the fishing area.

Nizar Ayyash, head of the Gaza fishermen's syndicate, said that the occupation forces implemented its decision to reduce the fishing area from six to three miles, where they fired toward the Palestinian fishermen in total violation of the truce agreement which had expanded the three-nautical mile fishing limit imposed by Israeli occupation, as part of its naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, to six nautical miles.

The occupation forces announced that the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon agreed to reduce the permitted fishing zone in the Sea of Gaza to three miles instead of six.

This comes after an Israeli promise to Turkey to lift the siege on the Gaza Strip, after its apology for its crime against the Turkish Marmara ship.

Israel seized the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it in 1981, in a move never recognized by the international community.

Man shot in the face with teargas canister at Hagai roadblock demonstration

Picture
Demonstrator Ameen Bayed, one of the wounded

The weekly Friday demonstration at the Hagai roadblock was attacked by the Israeli military less than one minute after participants started walking down the road.

A soldier shot a metal teargas canister directly into the demonstration and hit Ameen Bayed in his face, breaking his right cheekbone and damaging his teeth. He required surgery in a hospital in Hebron city. The video shows the moment at which he was hit (At 0.42).

During the demonstration, soldiers fired large amounts of tear gas directly at demonstrators – against the Israeli army’s own regulations, which state that gas canisters must be fired into the air, not straight forwards.

Tear gas canisters can be deadly – Mustafa Tamimi of Nabi Saleh was killed when a soldier shot him in the face with a tear gas canister in 2011.

49 year old Bayed, from Al Fawar camp, was participating in the weekly action calling for freedom of movement and for the opening of the main road connecting Hebron with its southern villages and towns. The closure of this road 12 years ago makes the Palestinian residents of these villages travel an additional 12km to reach their destinations in the city.

IOA reduces area of fishing in violation of calm agreement

Picture

Dr. Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, urged the Egyptian leadership to assume its responsibility vis-à-vis that violation in its capacity as the patron of the calm agreement.

Abu Zuhri held the IOA fully responsible for that decision and its repercussions after the calm agreement had allowed fisherman in Gaza to fish in an area of six nautical miles off the coasts of the enclave.

The IOA decided to reduce the area of fishing and to close Karm Abu Salem commercial crossing in response to the alleged firing of two local rockets from Gaza into 1948 occupied Palestinian land.

New York Times: Israeli Iron Dome failed in the recent war on Gaza

Picture
The American New York Times newspaper reported that some American weapons experts started raising doubts about the efficiency of Israel’s Iron Dome system, used in the recent war on Gaza.

The paper stated in a report published on Thursday that "a growing chorus of weapons experts in the United States and in Israel say their studies — based largely on analyses of hits and misses captured on video — suggest that Iron Dome destroyed no more than 40 percent of incoming warheads and perhaps far fewer."

Israeli officials initially claimed success rates of the Iron Dome up to 90 percent. However the New York Times quoted weapons expert Philip E. Coyle III as saying that “no military system is 90 percent effective".

For his part; American weapons expert Richard Lloyd told the Times he is doubting the efficacy of the Iron Dome system to drop and intercept Palestinian rockets during the recent war on Gaza.

He says that his own analyses show a success rate of only between 30 and 40 percent.

For the remaining targets, he judges that the interceptor was either badly aligned or too far away, at best leaving the rockets wounded or thrown off course.

Analysis: New Israeli government may wage military operation on Gaza

Picture
The director of Al-Mustaqbal Research Center in Gaza, writer and political analyst Ibrahim al-Madhoun affirmed that Israel intends to step up its operations against the Gaza Strip.

"Israeli Ministers have never accepted the existence of Hamas and its rule in Gaza. They consider that Hamas threatens their security", he said.

Madhoun told PIC that the new government will try to weaken Hamas and obstruct its projects, through issuing resolutions that will serve this goal.

He expected that Benjamin Netanyahu's new government will work on intensifying the degree of the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, and may launch a military operation against the Strip, especially after its defeat in the battle of the Shale Stones.

The political analyst pointed out that the new War Minister, Moshe Yaalon, has announced more than once that he supports the re-occupation of the Gaza Strip.

Regarding the negotiations, Madhoun said that the new Israeli government "will raise deceptive slogan with regard to the resumption of negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, in order to satisfy the administration of President Barack Obama on the one hand, and to cover up its crimes of settlement activities and repeated aggression on the other hand."

The director of al-Mustaqbal Center stressed that the occupation government will continue its attempts to exacerbate the internal tensions in the neighboring countries, and will push the United States to put pressure on the Arab Spring countries in exchange for the resumption of negotiations.

He pointed out that "the next plan of the Israeli government is based on deluding the international and regional communities about its seriousness regarding peace, in order to cover up its attempts to Judaize Jerusalem, to continue the construction of separation wall and to intensify the settlement activity."

Madhoun called on President Mahmoud Abbas to reject any calls for the resumption of negotiations because it will be futile and will enhance the Israeli projects and schemes.
