Picture
Sam al-Araj 18

A young Palestinian man says he was beaten and arrested by a group of Israeli police officers on Monday evening.

Sam al-Araj, 18, said he was attacked at 10 p.m. Monday after leaving the light rail at the Damascus Gate station near Jerusalem's Old City.

Al-Araj explained that he was with a friend in the rail when a group of young Israelis started making provocative gestures at them.

When they left the train, there were around 35 Israelis aged 20-25, and mostly Russian-born Israelis surrounded them. When they tried to flee the scene, the Israelis followed them, he said.

“My friend managed to escape from the area, and I was assaulted and beaten with rifle butts,” he added.

A number of them showed police IDs after the attack, and al-Araj was arrested, handcuffed, and taken to Saladdin police station where he was beaten and assaulted, he said.

Al-Araj added that he was released on bail at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

An Israeli police spokesman did not immediately return calls late Monday.

In a fire which broke out in central Israel, on Tuesday, two Palestinian workers have died while another has been injured after jumping to safety, according to medical sources. A Palestinian teenager was also injured on Tuesday, during clashes which broke out in Yatta.

Medics told Ma'an that two men, both from the West Bank city of Nablus, were killed in a fire which started in a banquet hall, in Beit Nehemia.

Another worker was injured after he jumped from the second floor of the building, upon which he was taken to Assaf Harofeh medical center, in Petah Tikva.

Earlier today, a young Palestinian was hit by a high-velocity tear gas canister during clashes with Israeli troops in the southern West Bank town of Yatta, according to a local official.

Spokesman for the Yatta municipality, Abd al-Aziz Abu Fanar, told Ma'an that Tamir Raed Abu Sabha was taken to a nearby hospital after being hit by the canister.

According to Fanar, the clashes took place near NGO offices and the office of the Yatta municipality, where Israeli soldiers bombarded the area with tear gas and stun grenades, which caused a state of alarm among the residents.

A spokesman for the Israeli military said that a "violent riot" ensued in the area following an arrest raid, and that the tear gas and stun grenades came as a means of dispersal.

Picture
Israeli occupation forces (IOF) raided four homes in Obaidiya village, east of Bethlehem, at dawn Tuesday. Local sources said that the soldiers broke into the homes of four Abu Sarhan family members and searched them, but no arrests were made.

However, Ahmed Al-Azraq, a 13-year-old child from Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem, was arrested on Monday after he was summoned for interrogation at Etzion detention center.

Meanwhile, IOF soldiers stormed Nablus city and a number of nearby villages at dawn Tuesday and nabbed a young man in the city, local sources told the PIC reporter.

They said that the soldiers raided three villages near Nablus and searched a number of homes.

In another incident, more than 70 IOF soldiers in army vehicles raided the village of Yabad, south of Jenin, on Monday night, locals said, adding that the soldiers clashed with young men.

The sources said that an Israeli undercover unit entered the village and was discovered by inhabitants who threw stones at its members and forced them to retreat out of the village.

Picture
Several Palestinian commercial buildings, power lines, and agricultural crops have been demolished by Israeli bulldozers in different areas of the Occupied Jerusalem and West Bank over the past 24 hours. PIC correspondent quoted local sources as stating that arbitrary demolitions of a series of commercial buildings, carpentry and other shops, were carried out by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) on Tuesday morning after having encircled a neighborhood north-west of Occupied Jerusalem and blocked its entrance and exit gates.

Other to-be-demolished buildings are being evacuated by Israeli soldiers.

In a related context, IOF ruined the power network in Idna town, west of al-Khalil, following bulldozing procedures and brusque invasions on Monday.

Local sources said IOF took off power poles, causing serious damage to around 500 meters-long electricity lines.

Israeli soldiers also broke into nearby Wadi Risha and rummaged through Palestinians’ native homes. Military checkpoints were randomly set up while vehicles and IDs were meticulously inspected, eye-witnesses told PIC.

In a similar incident, Israeli vehicles bulldozed large areas of Nahalin village, all planted with perennial trees, west of Bethlehem, on Monday morning.

Majid Ghyadha, member of Nahalin Village Council, said in a press release that Israeli bulldozers messed up the naturally idiosyncratic character of several acres of Wadi Salem lands. Dozens of olive, almond, and grape trees, all perennials, were entirely knocked down throughout.

IOF, heavily deployed in the area, have been denying landowners access into their lands, Ghyadha added, warning of anticipated plans to construct a road linking between the nearby illegal Daniel and Beitar Illit settlements.

The upsurge of Israeli attacks on Palestinian citizens and property in the village has been on the rise and made obvious through frequent pumping of water-wastes over Palestinians plants, razing procedures, and illegal land confiscation.

Meanwhile, a series of random combing operations were performed by IOF soldiers at the main entrance to the Fawar refugee camp, south of al-Khalil, on Monday night.

According to eye-witnesses, flare bombs were fired by an Israeli infantry unit that has stationed in the area and denied Palestinian citizens access out of or into the camp, with no legitimate reasons.

Tension conditions overwhelmed the place as many of students and defenders of faith were in the holy shrine to protect it from the settlers and colonial power attacks, he aware.

He added that the colonial power rapidly intervene inside the holy shire, and provide heavily protection for the settlers. They form a human barrier that prevents Palestinian worshipers from approaching any of these storming groups.

Eye-witnesses told PIC correspondent: “Large IOF troops raided Jenin camp at midnight and attacked more than 31 houses, most of them owned by relatives of the Islamic Jihad Leader Sheikh Bassam al-Saadi”.

A Palestinian man was shot and injured by Israeli forces in northern Gaza, on Monday, in the second incident of its kind in 24 hours, according to locals. In the West Bank, east of Jerusalem, a number of Palestinian-owned structures were demolished by the Israeli military, leaving 15 people homeless.

Witnesses told Ma'an News Agency that a 20-year-old man was collecting stones to make concrete outside of Beit Hanoun, near Erez crossing, when Israeli forces shot him.

The young man, who was not immediately identified, sustained moderate wounds, Ma'an reports.

A spokeswoman from the Israeli army said that "dozens" of Palestinians gathered in an area near the border which they were "not permitted" to enter. She stated that they were warned to distance themselves, upon which warning shots were fired into the air. Soldiers then fired at the lower extremities of one, the spokeswoman said, identifying a hit.

Just Sunday, in the same area, a 21-year-old gravel worker was also shot by Israeli forces. The man was taken to Kamal Adwan Hospital in moderate condition.

Ma'an further reports that many people in the besieged coastal enclave collect small stones in order to make gravel for concrete, because the import of concrete is forbidden by the Israeli economic blockade, which has been in place since 2006.

Israeli soldiers frequently fire on farmers and other civilians inside the Strip, if they get too close to certain areas of land near the border which the Israeli military has closed off to Palestinians.

According to Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem, the number of live-fire casualties near the fence has been on the rise since last December.

Also on Monday, in al-Eizariya and the E1 area east of Jerusalem, Israeli bulldozers razed Palestinian structures and left 15 people homeless, according to a local official.

Secretary-general of the Bedouin Jahalin tribes, Sami Abu Ghaliya, said that Israeli authorities destroyed two small residential structures and four of agricultural nature belonging to his family at the entrance of the village.

Additionally, two structures used to house cattle were destroyed by Israeli bulldozers, in the al-Kasarat area in E1.

In nearby Jabal al-Baba, Ma'an reports that a tent belonging to Mahmoud Ibrahim Jahalin was destroyed, along with two animal sheds, according to Abu Ghaliya.

The tent was a donation to Jahalin following the demolition of his home at the beginning of April.

Israel rarely allows Palestinians to build in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. They are responsible for the demolition of at least 27,000 Palestinian homes and structures since first occupying the West Bank in 1967, according to the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions.

More than 500,000 Israeli settlers live in settlements across the West Bank and East Jerusalem, in direct defiance of international law.

Israeli forces frequently shoot at farmers and other civilians inside the Gaza Strip if they approach large swathes of land near the border that the Israeli military has deemed off-limits to Palestinians.

According to a March report by Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem, the number of live-fire casualties near the fence has been on the rise since late December.

"The military must also instruct the troops that the use of live fire is absolutely prohibited for the purpose of getting Palestinian civilians who pose no threat to anyone to back away from the areas near the perimeter fence."

After calling on the Palestinians to leave and "firing warning shots into the air," Israeli soldiers fired a man's lower extremities, identifying a hit.

The man was "slightly injured" and left the scene of his own accord, the spokeswoman said.

She said riot dispersal means such as tear gas and rubber-coated bullets were not used prior to firing live bullets.

Many people in the besieged coastal enclave collect small stones in order to make gravel for concrete, because the import of concrete is forbidden by the Israeli economic blockade. The blockade has been in force since 2006.

Israeli settlers set fire to a private Palestinian field in the Tel Rumeida neighborhood in the southern West Bank city of Hebron on Saturday night as part of a celebration for the Jewish holiday of Lag BaOmer.

Settlers circled around the field and watched as the fire burned olive trees, in a field that locals said belongs to the Iqneibi family.

Some of the settlers reportedly assaulted a cameraman who works for the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz as he tried to take film the fire.

Lag BaOmer marks the the death of a 2nd century sage associated with Jewish mysticism, and is traditionally marked with bonfires.

Activist and co-founder of the Hebron activist group Youth against Settlements Issa Amro told Ma'an that Israeli settlers have recently been harassing and assaulting the Palestinian residents of Tel Rumeida in an attempt to scare them and get them to leave their houses and lands.

Hebron is a frequent site of tensions due to the presence of around 500 Israeli settlers in the Old City, many of whom have illegally occupied Palestinian houses and forcibly removed the original inhabitants.

Tel Rumeida hosts one of the most militant Jewish settlements in the city, and locals complain of near daily harassment and attacks by the groups, who are under heavy Israeli military protection.
