4 Days of Clashes in Aida Camp, After Activists Break through Wall
Picture
Monday, March 24, 2014, marked the fourth day in a row of clashes between residents of Aida refugee camp and Israeli forces, after Palestinian activists tore through the separation wall which surrounds the camp.

Local popular committee member Munthir Amira told Ma'an News Agency that Israeli special forces raided the Bethlehem-area refugee camp on Monday evening, detaining 24-year-old Muatasim Basim Abu Khdeir.

A number of Israeli soldiers gathered in the area of Aida's Key of Return, Amira said. Troops were also stationed on residents' rooftops, using them as military posts during clashes with Palestinians in the area.

The raid came on the same day which Israeli forces reinstalled a section of the separation wall that had been destroyed by Palestinians in the camp, on Thursday.

There are 19 refugee camps in the occupied West Bank, within which live about a quarter of the 771,000 registered refugees in the territory.

Aida camp is a frequent site of clashes because it is located beside Rachel's Tomb, which is surrounded on three sides by the Israeli annexation wall, despite being in the middle of the Palestinian city of Bethlehem.

More than 760,000 Palestinians -- estimated today to number 4.8 million with their descendants -- were pushed into exile or driven out of their homes in the conflict surrounding Israel's creation in 1948.

Israeli forces shoot, injure Palestinian in Bethlehem
Picture
Israeli occupation forces shot and injured a Palestinian youth from Abu Ayda refugee camp, north of Bethlehem, the southern West Bank. Yousuf Saqer,21, sustained moderate injuries after the Israeli soldiers shot him   with live and rubber-coated bullets.

Some sources from Abu Akar family said, “the  Israeli troops raided our house at 6:30 am and climbed its roof turning it into a garrison.”

“A state of calm prevailed in the camp during the last few hours after three days of clashes, “ it pointed out.

Locals said that the occupation intended to deliberately climb houses near the Apartheid Wall  in an attempt to provoke the Palestinian citizens living there.

The Israeli forces released some of the family members while others remained in detention. They ordered residents of the house to evacuate their home for claimed military purposes.

Violent clashes erupted yesterday between hundreds of Palestinians and Israeli soldiers in Ayda Camp, leading to injuring three Israelis and dozens of Palestinians.

Three Palestinians were shot and injured by rubber-coated metal bullets fired by Israeli forces in Aida refugee camp, to the north of Bethlehem, according to local sources.

Three citizens, including a female, were injured after being fired upon by Israeli forces. The people, including one seriously-injured, were admitted into Beit Jala hospital for treatment.

Forces declared the camp and the surrounding area a closed military zone, where they used equipment to fix some damaged parts of the apartheid wall which surrounds the camp.

Forces raided other homes in the area, taking a local resident into custody, security sources told WAFA.

Meanwhile, in Nablus, soldiers in army vehicles broke through the nearby Balata refugee camp, kidnapping two people, 25 and 45, after searching several homes in the area.

Israeli settlers assaulted and beat up a Palestinian resident in the village of Burin, to the south of Nablus.

The Palestinian, who was identified as Belal Dakhil, said that settlers attacked him and beat him up, under the protection of Israeli soldiers, while he was at the eastern part of the village checking on his house, which he was ordered by the Israeli army to stop the construction of, back in 2001.

Suspected settlers punctured the tires of dozens of Palestinian cars in annexed East Jerusalem, in the latest so-called "price tag" hate crime, police and an AFP correspondent said.

The attack took place in Beit Hanina with Hebrew graffiti on a nearby bus reading "Gentiles in the country are enemies".

Police said the tires of 34 cars were punctured, but an AFP correspondent at the scene placed the number at 45, noting all four wheels of each car were slashed.

Residents told Ma'an that the damage was discovered at 5 a.m. as locals left their homes to go to work.

Aida refugee camp turns into a battlefield after the latest attacks by the IOF
By Monjed Jado.

Aida refugee camp, located in the north of Bethlehem in the West Bank, turned into a battlefield after being raided by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), who declared the camp a closed military zone.

This third day of clashes, the IOF intensified their attacks on Aida camp, storming it with large forces in the morning and carrying out violent attacks against the residents of the camp and their property.

Clashes began today as soon as the soldiers entered into the camp and started shooting tear gas at the youth who had gathered next to the hole in the wall.
Local sources told Palestine News Network that the Israeli army used live ammunition, rubber bullets, sound bombs and tear gas during their attacks. They targeted houses and cars, which led to the suffocation of dozens of residents of the camp, including some children and elderly people. The people in the camp responded to these attacks throwing rocks and bricks to the soldiers.

One of the activist from the camp, Mohammad Lutfi (known as Habshi), fractured his ankle today while trying to evacuate some children from one of the houses in the camp. The building had been targeted by the Israeli soldiers and was full of tear gas

Three young men were shot by the occupation forces during the clashes. One of them was injured with live bullets in his leg, whereas the two others were hit by rubber bullets.

The occupation forces also stormed Mustafa Abu Aker’s family home, located near the UNRWA school and the military tower. It is next to this home, on the wall, where the young activists dug the hole during the past two days and the army decided to invade it for its strategic location.

Besides attacking the youth and the other residents of the camp, the soldiers also targeted a press car and they burnt down two more cars by firing tear gas directly at them. During the confrontations Israeli soldiers fired bullets at the car of an Associated Press photographer, while he was trying to cover the clashes in the camp. The photographer, Eyed Hamad, told PNN that the Israeli soldier opened fire on his car at a very short distance, not more than three or four meters, despite there was a clear sign in the car telling it is a ‘Foreign Press Car’.

This attack on the Associated Press photographer comes a day after the Israeli army detained three journalists in Aida camp. Moses Al-Shaeer, from France-Presse Agency, Abdul Rahman Yunes, photographer of the Al-quds newspaper and an American freelance photographer. In addition, an Italian photographer was injured in the face two days ago during clashes in Aida.

Israeli sources said this evening that a soldier was injured, hit by a stone thrown by the youth in Aida refugee camp.

Clashes in Aida Camp Continue for Second Day
Sun, 23 Mar 2014 18:55:19

Two Israeli soldiers and a Palestinian youth were injured as clashes with Israeli forces in Aida refugee camp, north of Bethlehem, continued for a second day, Sunday.

Locals told Ma'an News Agency that Israeli forces raided several houses in the camp, taking them over and using them as military posts, while firing tear gas grenades throughout the camp. Local youth responded by hurling rocks at Israeli forces.

According to Ynet, two soldiers were "critically" wounded in the clashes.

Witnesses in the camp said that two Israeli soldiers were laying injured in the camp after Palestinians threw bricks at them from a rooftop near the camp school.

Israeli forces opened fire at the camp after the incident, and called for reinforcements in order to evacuate the injured soldiers.

A young Palestinian was also shot in the head with a rubber-coated steel bullet when soldiers opened fire on protesters.

The Israelis also opened fire on the car of Associated Press photographer Iyad Hamad, as he covered the clashes.

Dozens suffered from excessive tear gas inhalation during the clashes.

Soldiers also inspected vehicles in the camp and prevented the movement of locals, despite the heavy presence of tear gas in residential areas.

The clashes come a day after heavy clashes in the camp, as locals protested against the killing of three Palestinians, during a raid in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, on Saturday.

Aida camp is a frequent site of clashes because it is located beside Rachel's Tomb, which is surrounded on three sides by the Israeli separation wall despite being in the middle of the Palestinian city of Bethlehem.

Continued Israeli Attacks Across West Bank
Picture
Israeli forces, Sunday, abducted two people from the West Bank and another from the Jerusalem area. Others were summoned others for interrogation, according to local and security sources.

Two people, ages 25 and 35, were kidnapped by Israeli forces from the city of Hebron and the nearby town of Dora, after their houses were searched and content vandalized.

Forces also handed summons to appear before the Israeli intelligence to almost a dozen people from the Hebron area, according to WAFA.

On Saturday, March 22, Israeli police took Zaaid Salame Mehamre, a shepherd from the Palestinian village of Maghayr Al-Abeed, while he was grazing his sheep on Jabel Doff (the location where the Havat Ma'on outpost used to stand before the year 2000, when it was moved to Hill 833).

The action was carried out under the accusation of “trespassing”, although no official documents on the ownership of the land were presented, according to the Alternative Information Center (AIC).

Meanwhile, the army set up a military checkpoint at the entrance to Fawwar refugee camp, stopping vehicles and checking the identity cards of the drivers.

In Jerusalem, Israeli police took into custody a worker, age 28, from the village of Husan to the west of Bethlehem, under the pretext of entering Israel without permission.

In the Jenin district, army forces stormed the village of Al-Yamoun amid the firing of stun grenades and tear gas towards residents, causing several cases of suffocation. The forces also handed eight people summons for interrogation. No arrests were reported.

Three Palestinian youth were shot with rubber-coated steel bullets fired at them by Israeli forces, during confrontations which continued for the second day in Aida refugee camp, north of Bethlehem, according to medical sources.

The sources told WAFA that forces fired rubber-coated steel bullets and tear gas canisters toward the residents, shooting and injuring three youth. Several other Palestinians suffered from tear gas suffocation.

They were transferred to hospital for treatment.

Soldiers opened fire at a journalist’s car while he was covering confrontations between forces and youth in Aida refugee camp, to the north of Bethlehem, according to the attacked journalist.

Journalist Iyad Ahmad, who works for the Associated Press, said that soldiers opened fire at his car while he was driving to the camp to cover the news, causing damage to the car.

To be noted, Israeli army recently intensified their arbitrary measures against journalists, including detention for periods of several hours and imposing restrictions on their free movement.

Israeli settlers attacked several Palestinian farmers in the village of Burin, south of Nablus, injuring one, according to a local activist.

Ghassan Daghlas, who monitors settlement activities in the north of the West Bank, told WAFA that a number of settlers attacked farmers and hurled stones at them while they were working on opening an agricultural road, at the eastern part of the village.

He said that settlers surrounded one of the farmers, beat him and threw stones at him, causing him several injuries throughout his body.

He was transferred to hospital for treatment where his condition was described as moderate.

Man injured as settlers attack Palestinian farmers near Burin
Picture
Clashes broke out Sunday morning after Jewish settlers attacked Palestinian farmers in their fields near the northern West Bank village of Burin south of Nablus.

Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian Authority official who monitors settlement-related activities in the northern West Bank, told Ma'an that dozens of settlers from the nearby Bracha settlement attacked Palestinian farmers in the eastern fields of Burin.

The farmers fought back and clashes broke out as both sides hurled stones at each other.

As a result, 30-year-old Munir Qandus was injured by a stone and was evacuated to the hospital for treatment.

Daghlas highlighted that Israeli settlers "use all means possible to prevent Palestinian residents from building agricultural roads which would help them access their lands."

The area around the villages south of Nablus is a frequent site of settler violence and Palestinian clashes with Israeli forces as it is located beside the notoriously violent Israeli settlements of Yitzhar and Bracha.

In mid-February, local settlers threw rocks at Palestinian schoolchildren and attacked a local high school in two separate incidents that led to clashes.

Settlers frequently attack a number of local villages and prevent farmers from reaching their lands, according to UNOCHA, in addition to attacks on local olive trees themselves.

As a result, local youths sometimes respond by targeting vehicles belonging to settlers on the area's main roads.

Settler violence against Palestinians and their property in the occupied West Bank is systematic and ignored by Israeli authorities, who rarely intervene in the violent attacks or prosecute the perpetrators.

In 2013, there were 399 incidents of settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Settlers from Havat Ma’on attacked Palestinian shepherds in two different places at the same time, in the South Hebron Hills
Picture
International Solidarity Movement team - On March 20, four settlers from Havat Ma'on illegal outpost attacked, in two different places at the same time, two internationals and seven Palestinian shepherds while grazing flocks on their own land. The settlers were armed with a gun and slingshots.

At 9.58 am a settler with a gun chased two Palestinian shepherds away, while grazing between the Palestinian village of Tuba and Havat Ma'on Israeli illegal outpost. He first shouted at the shepherds and then ran after them for more than two kilometers. The harassment lasted for about one hour, when the shepherds finally arrived to Tuba.

In the meanwhile, at 10.03 am three settler teens fired a petard from the outpost in order to scare the Palestinians who were in Meshaha valley. About 15 minutes later the Israeli Police arrived to the place and spoke to the settlers and the Palestinian shepherds. The police allowed the latter to graze in Meshaha valley, south side of the outpost.

At 10.40 am a masked settler and two children went to the same valley and attacked five Palestinian shepherds, three men and two women. By using slingshots, the attackers threw stones against the shepherds and the internationals, for about five minutes. During the assault the settlers entered Palestinian private land. At a later stage the Israeli police arrived to the place and the attackers ran away. The policeman saw them going back to the outpost but did not try to stop them. One of the Palestinians attacked told the police the event adding that a settler with a gun was still chasing away a Palestinian shepherd from Tuba, on the other side of the outpost. The Israeli police moved to the village of Tuba together with the Palestinian and an international volunteer, while the rest of the Palestinian shepherds successfully grazed their flocks in Meshaha valley until around 12.20 am.

At 11.30 am the police car arrived to Tuba and after five minutes the policeman reached the settler who chased the Palestinian shepherds away. The settler was still close to the Palestinian village. The policeman inquired one of the Palestinians, Ahmed Jundiya, and the settler. After that both of them got in the police car and were driven to Kiryat Arba police station. The two filed a complaint against each other: the settler maintained that the shepherds were on Israeli land and Jundiya proved, thanks to his camera provided by B'tselem organization for human rights, that he was chased away while grazing his flock on Palestinian land.

The Israeli police decided to investigate more in order to define within three months whom that land belongs to. Jundiya could come back home at about 4.30 pm.
