Israeli forces dispersed a Palestinian demonstration against reckless driving by firing tear gas canisters at protesters south of Nablus on Saturday.
Local residents blocked a road in the town of Huwwara in the Northern West Bank as part of a demonstration against speeding drivers on the road, a major north-south thoroughfare used by Israeli settlers and local Palestinian residents.
The protest came in response to several incidents in which drivers hit and killed pedestrians on the road, including the most recent in which two children were killed by a speeding driver.
Israeli soldiers came to the scene of the protest and began launching tear gas canisters at the crowd in order to disperse them and open the road to vehicular traffic.

Israeli forces frequently shoot at farmers and other civilians inside the Gaza Strip if they approach large swathes of land near the border that the Israeli military has deemed off-limits to Palestinians.
The "security buffer zone" extends between 500 meters and 1500 meters into the Strip, effectively turning local farms into no-go zones.
According to UNOCHA, 17% of Gaza's total land area and 35% of its agricultural land were within the buffer zone as of 2010, directly affecting the lives and livelihoods of more than 100,000 Gazans.

Both Fatah and Hamas have recently spoken of an increased desire for reconciliation between the Hamas-run government in the Gaza Strip and the Fatah-led government in the West Bank.
Fatah's reconciliation team proposed a national unity plan to Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh on Tuesday, a Fatah spokesman said.
The proposal came as Hamas released seven Fatah prisoners who were in Gaza jails for "security reasons."
On Monday, AFP quoted Haniyeh as saying that "the (Hamas) government will allow all Fatah members who are from Gaza and who left the Strip (in 2007) to return, without any preconditions," apart from those accused of killing Hamas members during intense factional fighting that year.
The division between the two Palestinian factions began in 2006, when Hamas won the Palestinian legislative elections.
In the following year, clashes erupted between Fatah and Hamas, leaving Hamas in control of the Strip and Fatah in control of parts of the occupied West Bank.
The groups have made failed attempts at national reconciliation for years, most recently in 2012, when they signed two agreements -- one in Cairo and a subsequent one in Doha -- which have as of yet been entirely unimplemented.

B'Tselem video shows Yitzhar settlers hurling stones at Palestinian home, school in Nablus-adjacent village. Footage shows IDF soldiers present, not intervening A video released on Wednesday by the B'Tselem rights group showed settlers hurling stones at the house of a Palestinian family and a school. The footage reveals a group of masked settlers who left the settlement of Yitzhar in the direction of the Nablus-adjacent village of Ourif, where they started throwing stones on the house and school. |
The video shows soldiers walking alongside the stone-throwers without stopping them from the attacks.
The B'Tselem group reported that several students from the school on which the stones were thrown threw stones back at the settlers, prompting the soldiers to throw smoke grenades at the students.
"The footage shows that the military, which is supposed to protect Palestinians in the West Bank, was essentially used as a security buffer for violent settlers," a B'Tselem statement noted, adding that "the soldiers did not stop the violent acts and only responded when the Palestinians hurled stones back at the settlers.
" It didn’t seem as though the soldiers attempted to identify the masked men or detain them until police arrive so they can face the full extent of the law."
