Two European-funded W. Bank schools face destruction and seizure
Picture
Another two European-funded Palestinian schools in the occupied West Bank are threatened with demolition and seizure by the Israeli occupation authority.

The schools in Wadi as-Seeq and al-Muntar were built last year with European donor funding as humanitarian relief aid for Palestinian Bedouin communities lacking basic services.

The schools serve children of displaced and refugee communities who have already suffered destruction of their property by Israel over many years.

The schools are now the subject of Israeli court proceedings that could lead to their destruction and seizure. The hearings are scheduled for November 20 and December 10, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).

The NRC said its information counseling and legal aid program would provide legal assistance to the communities in court.

“Once again, Palestinian children are facing the traumatic prospect of turning up for school and finding that it no longer exists,” the NRC’s country director in Palestine, Kate O’Rourke, said.

“Once again we have to ask: Why are children being denied their fundamental right to education? This attack on schools is part of a wider drive to forcibly transfer Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem to create space for illegal settlement expansion,” O’Rourke added.

Headmaster of al-Muntar school, Wisam Merei, warned that “If the school was demolished, most of the children would drop out.”

A community representative and parent, Abu Hasan, confirmed these concerns and said that “children do not have any other place to study in his community. This school allows local children to study without having to leave their community and use risky roads close to the nearby settlement.”

The Wadi as-Seeq community has received 11 stop-work orders for their structures in the last nine years. Two structures were demolished in 2012 and 2014, and all mobile latrines provided by a local NGO in 2011 were confiscated by the Israeli army’s civil administration, which is now also attempting to seize the school from the community.

"We call on the governments and donors funding Palestinian children’s education to increase diplomatic pressure to prevent the demolition and seizure of school infrastructure, which is in violation of international humanitarian law and all children’s basic right to education,” O’Rourke said.

“The destruction of educational structures is not just a violation of international law, it also demonstrates contempt towards the international community’s provision of aid to the occupied Palestinian population, to ensure safe places for children to learn,” she added.

“Earlier this year, the Israeli authorities destroyed and damaged three other schools in the West Bank funded by international assistance, just before children were due to go back to school after the summer break,” according to the NRC.

“More than 60 schools in the West Bank are currently at risk of demolition, and children in schools across the West Bank face attacks on their right to education,” the NRC stated.

“In the first half of 2017 alone, 93 education-related incidents affecting 13,906 students were documented in the West Bank, including incidents where children were arrested from their classrooms and exposed to harassment at checkpoints.”

Bedouin village of al-Araqib demolished for 121st time
Picture
Israeli police forces demolished on Thursday morning the Bedouin village of al-Araqib in the Negev region of southern Israel for the 121st consecutive time.

Israeli bulldozers escorted by Israeli police raided the village in the early morning hours and started the demolition, while Israeli police closed all entrances leading to the village.

Al-Araqib is one of 45 Bedouin villages considered “unrecognized” by the Israeli authorities. According to the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), more than half of the approximately 160,000 Negev Bedouins reside in unrecognized villages.

Rights groups have affirmed that the demolition of al-Araqib and other unrecognized Bedouin villages is a central Israeli policy aimed at removing the indigenous Palestinian population from the Negev and transferring them to government-zoned townships to make room for the expansion of Jewish-only settlements.

Israeli army razes memorial to Palestinian martyr in al-Khalil
Picture
The Israeli occupation army on Wednesday removed a memorial to Palestinian martyr Farouk Seder in al-Khalil city, claiming the measure was part of its campaign against incitement.

Fadi Seder, the martyr’s brother, said that an Israeli bulldozer escorted by soldiers demolished the memorial standing outside the house of the family in Qizun area of al-Khalil city one day after ordering his family to remove it.

Seder affirmed that his family would have another memorial to his brother built in response to its demolition, accusing the Israeli occupation authority of trying to erase anything reminding it of its crime against his brother and to weaken the family’s morale.

Seder was shot dead by soldiers in late October 2015 in al-Shuhada street in al-Khalil on allegations of his attempt to carry out a stabbing attack.

The removal of Seder’s memorial was part of a systematic Israeli policy of dismantling and razing monuments and mourning tents for Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.

Israeli Soldiers Demolish A Home, Hand Demolition Order Against Another, Near Ramallah
Picture
Israeli soldiers invaded, on Thursday at dawn, the village of Ni’lin, west of the central West Bank city of Ramallah, demolished one home, and handed a demolition order against another home.

The WAFA Palestinian News Agency has reported that the soldiers demolished the home of Mohammad Adel Awad, in the al-Mhallel area, in Ni’lin, rendering him and his six other family members homeless.

It added that the family only managed to remove some of their furniture and belongings, before the soldiers leveled their homes.

The army also handed a demolition order against a neighboring home, under the pretext of being built without a permit.

It is worth mentioning that, prior to Israel’s establishment in the historic land of Palestine in 1948, Ni’lin was part of Ramla governorate, and then became part of Ramallah and al-Biereh governorate, in central West Bank, after Israel confiscated more than %60 of its lands and depopulated most of its inhabitants, who became externally displaced refugees.

Jerusalem Municipality Demolishes Residential Structure in al-Eesawiyya
Picture
The Israeli municipality of Jerusalem, on Wednesday, demolished a residential structure in the neighborhood of al-Eesawiyya, in occupied East Jerusalem, under the pretext of lacking an Israeli construction permit, according to local WAFA sources.

The municipality demolished a residential structure, made of metals, that was installed by Omar Dari, a local citizen who said he was forced to build without a permit in order to shelter his family, after he was unable to obtain a permit from the municipality.

This is the second structure to be demolished by the Israeli municipality of Jerusalem in al-Eesawiyya since Wednesday’s morning.

Earlier today, the municipality demolished a two-story building in the neighborhood, also for lacking a construction permit.

Israeli forces arrest 18 Palestinians in OJ, West Bank
Picture
Israeli forces rounded up on Wednesday 18 Palestinians including 2 in al-Khlail and Bethlehem, and 16 from al-Tour neighborhood in Occupied Jerusalem.

Lawyer Mohammad Hammoud said that the 16 Jerusalemite detainees were arrested after storming and searching their homes. They were transferred to Israeli investigation centers in Salahuddin Street, al-Maskobiya and Jabal Abu Ghanim in Occupied Jerusalem.

Israeli forces claimed, in a statement, that two guns were seized in two towns: Yatta in southern al-Khalil and al-Ram east of Occupied Jerusalem. A sum of 6,000 shekels were also confiscated in al-Ubaidiya town near Bethlehem.

Israeli forces stormed several homes in Beit Ummar town to the north of al-Khalil. Meanwhile, clashes between Palestinians and Israeli occupation forces erupted in Aqbet Jaber refugee camp in Jericho city during the Israeli incursion into the refugee camp.

Barghouthi: Israel divided West Bank into 225 islands
Picture
The Palestinian MP and political expert, Mustafa al-Barghouthi, on Wednesday said that Israel has turned the West Bank into 225 separate small islands through the checkpoints and settlement outposts scattered everywhere in addition to the apartheid wall passing through its lands.

Following the Oslo Accords in 1993, the West Bank was divided into three areas: A, B and C. Area A comprises 18% of the West Bank and falls under the security and administrative control of the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Area B represents 21% of the West Bank and is administered by both the PA and Israel, while Area C, which covers 61% of the West Bank, is exclusively controlled by Israel.

Barghouthi affirmed that the Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territories has increased by more than 100% since the US President Donald Trump took office in December 2016.

During an interview with the Anadolu agency in Istanbul, Barghouthi stressed that the current Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu has no desire to allow the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

"We are facing a dangerous Israeli project that must be met with strong and effective Palestinian unity," he added.

The Israeli government since the beginning of 2017 has issued many tenders for the construction of thousands of settlement units in the West Bank.

According to human rights organizations, Israel's settlement activity in 2017 is three times higher than that recorded in 2016.

Israeli authorities to confiscate Palestinian land near Ramallah
Picture
Attorney General of the Israeli government, Avichai Mandelblit, on Wednesday okayed the confiscation of privately-owned Palestinian land near Ramallah in favor of the construction of a settlement road leading to Harisha settlement outpost.

The Hebrew TV channel Seven reported that this decision by Mandelblit contradicts his previous position on the case.

Israel's Minister of Justice, Ayelet Shaked, welcomed the decision and said it encourages the reconsideration of previous legal positions concerning the settlement construction in the West Bank.

Elkin: Start planning for one million settlers in W. Bank & J’lem
Picture
Israeli Jerusalem affairs minister Ze’ev Elkin has urged his government to start planning for one million settlers in Area C of the West Bank and Jerusalem.

“This will happen; it is only a question of when,” Elkin said, adding that it could be anywhere between the next 10 to 20 years, depending on the pace of construction.

According to the Israeli central bureau of statistics, 400,000 settlers lived in West Bank settlements in 2016.

Using a word of Arabic slang, Elkin dismissed the idea of a Palestinian state in the West Bank. “Halas (enough) with the story of two states. There is no other option but the state of Israel, certainly between the Jordan [River] to the sea there will be one state.”

Elkin spoke in Jerusalem at a special conference on population growth in the West Bank and Jerusalem titled “On the Way to a Million,” that was sponsored by Amana, the construction arm of the settlement movement.

The current pace of housing of less than 3,000 a year, is not enough to allow for such a population spike, Elkin said. Ultimately 100,000-120,000 new apartment units are needed, he added.

Elkin urged the regional council to start preparing technical plans for settlers’ growth even if it seems as if the approvals would never happen.

Soldiers Invaded Towns Near Jenin, Photograph Homes
Picture
Several Israeli army jeeps invaded, on Wednesday at dawn, the towns of Fahma and ‘Ejja, south of the northern West Bank city of Jenin, and photographed homes and streets.

The soldiers invaded many neighborhoods in the two towns, and photographed many homes and streets, before detaining a young man, identified as Jasser Waleed Qawasma, a student of Hebron University.

The young man was released after the soldiers detained and interrogated him for several hours.

The soldiers also fired many gas bombs and concussion grenades at local youngsters, who hurled stones at the invading army jeeps.

Army Demolishes An Under-Construction Building In Jerusalem
Picture
Israeli soldiers invaded, early on Wednesday morning, the al-‘Isawiya town, in the center of occupied East Jerusalem, and demolished an under-construction two-story building.

Mohammad Abu Ryala, a member of the Follow-Up Committee in al-‘Isawiya, said that the family received an order to halt the construction of their property in order to obtain a construction permit from the City Council.

He added that the family headed to the City Council and started the lengthy and hefty procedure, but the army and the city proceeded with the demolition before a final ruling or arrangements were reached.

The city did not even inform the family that it already set the date for demolition their property, and the demolition came as a surprise.

It is worth mentioning that, since Israel occupied East Jerusalem in 1967, al-Isawiya became a target for ongoing illegal destruction, annexation and confiscation of homes and lands, while thousands of illegal colonialist units have been built there, in addition to lands that were confiscated to build facilities for the Hebrew University, and Hadassah Medical Center.

While Israel cites “natural growth of population” to build and expand illegal colonies on Palestinian lands, the Palestinians have lost many homes to these demolitions, while dozens more have received demolition orders.

Israel has not been granting the Palestinians in the town any construction permits, an issue that forces the expanding families to take the risk to build, despite the looming threats of demolition.

Israeli Soldiers Detonate A Palestinian Home In Jerusalem
Picture
Dozens of Israeli soldiers invaded, on Wednesday at dawn, the town of Beit Surik, northwest of occupied East Jerusalem, and detonated the family home of a Palestinian who was killed near Hadar Adar illegal Israeli colony, last September, after killing three Israeli security officers.

Media sources in Jerusalem said the soldiers imposed a tight siege on Beit Surik, before invading it, and removed the family of Nimir al-Jamal from their home, before demolishing it.

The soldiers rounded the family, and all other neighboring families, in the yard of a local school in Beit Surik, and wired the home before detonating it.

The family has been fighting the collective punishment measure enforced by the army and Israeli courts, but lost its latest appeal a week ago, and received an official demolition order.

It is worth mentioning that Nimir al-Jamal was killed on Tuesday morning, September 26th 2017. (video)

IOF delivers confiscation orders to farmers in Tulkarem
Picture
Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) on Tuesday morning handed over confiscation orders to farmers in Shoufeh town to the southeast of Tulkarem city.

The confiscation notices stipulate seizing  more Palestinian lands in the area for expanding Avnei Hefetz settlement, which was illegally established over the town's land in eastern Tulkarem.

Local sources pointed out that the confiscation decision includes the takeover of three land lots: part of Khalet al-Sheikh site, Wadi Issa, and al-Manzel site.

Palestinians arrested, cash seized in West Bank sweep by Israeli army
Picture
Several Palestinians were kidnapped by the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) at daybreak Tuesday in abduction sweeps rocking the West Bank.

The Israeli army claimed responsibility for the abduction of 18 Palestinians on claims that they have been involved in anti-occupation activities.

The occupation soldiers also seized thousands of shekels from homes of slain Palestinian activists.

The Israeli army said seven Palestinians were arrested in Idna and al-Koum villages, near al-Khalil, as they attempted to enter 1948 Occupied Palestine (Israel).

The occupation troops also stormed the homes of slain Palestinian anti-occupation activists in Ramallah’s northwestern town of Deir Abu Mishaal and stole money, before they kidnapped the Palestinian young man Nidal Ata, the brother of slain Baraa Ataa.

Six Palestinians, including two ex-prisoners, were also kidnapped by the IOF from their homes in Tulkarem province.

At the same time, dozens of Israeli soldiers stormed Qabatiya’s eastern neighborhood, south of Jenin, and kidnapped the Palestinian youngster Ali Kmeil after they wreaked havoc on his family home and attacked his relatives.

Overnight, the occupation army unlocked the Hawara military checkpoint, south of Nablus, after a horde of Israeli settlers assaulted Palestinians in the area, leaving several civilians injured.

Another Palestinian Forced To Demolish His Own Store To Avoid High Fees
Picture
A Palestinian man from Ein al-Louza neighborhood in Silwan town, south of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, in occupied Jerusalem, demolished his own store, on Monday evening, to avoid excessively high fines and fees by the City Council.

The Palestinian, Amin Al-Abbassi, said he had to self-demolish his building, after the City Council decided to demolish it, and granted him two weeks to do so, or else face excessive fines and fees, in addition to facing legal issues in its courts.

Al-Abbassi added that he built his store two years ago, using tin and steel, and that the army and the City Council repeatedly invaded the property, and issued demolition orders for “being built without a permit.”

Bethlehem: 50 Dunams Seized for Settlement Expansion
Picture
The settlement brigade in West Bank recently confiscated 50 dunams of land in the Bethlehem area, for the expansion of the Ma’aleh Rehavam settlement outpost, to the south of the city, Haaretz Hebrew newspapers reported.

The confiscation comes to expand the fields surrounding the output, while an Israeli security source said that the land has been allocated since 2002, for the work of agriculture of the outpost, the newspaper said, according to Al Ray.
