Israeli army prevents farmers in West Bank from ploughing their land
Picture
Israeli forces prevented today Palestinian farmers from ploughing their lands near the northern West Bank city of Nablus, according to one of the farmers.

Ahmad Shahin said farmers went today to their land in the village of al-Sawiyeh to plough it in order to plant it when Israeli soldiers stopped them and ordered them to leave it under the pretext it was state land. video

He said the army would not let the farmers work in their lands because they want to keep it for settlement expansion as settlers often cut trees and encroach on the Palestinian land.

OCHA: Israel demolished nine Palestinian-owned structures in two weeks
Picture
The Israeli authorities demolished nine Palestinian-owned structures due to the lack of building permits during the past two weeks, displacing a family of eight and affecting 19 others in four communities in Area C of the West Bank, said the UN-OCHA in its biweekly humanitarian bulletin on Israeli violations in Palestine.

The displacement took place in the Bedouin community of Ein ad Duyuk at Tahta, near Jericho, where the occupation authorities demolished an inhabited caravan provided as humanitarian assistance. Another five aid structures, including residential tents and animal shelters, were demolished in the nearby community of Deir al Qilt.

During the same period, OCHA said five Palestinians were injured and around 470 Palestinian-owned olive trees and saplings damaged by Israeli settlers. Four of the injuries were caused by physical assault in the Israeli-controlled area of Hebron city (H2), and the villages of At Tuwani, near Hebron, and Jibiya, near Ramallah.

In addition, around 200 olive trees belonging to farmers from Turmus’ayya and Al Mughayyir villages, near Ramallah, were vandalized, reportedly by settlers from the adjacent Adei Ad settlement outpost.

Most of these trees are located on a plot where Palestinian access is restricted by a 'prior coordination’ system. Assailants, believed to be from the same settlement outpost, also dismantled a fence around another plot and stole dozens of wooden poles.

Around 120 additional trees were cut down in the villages of Ras Karkar (Ramallah), Kafr Qaddum (Qalqiliya), As Sawiya and Qaryut (both in Nablus).

Near Fuqeiqis village (Hebron), settlers uprooted around 1,000 seasonal vegetable seedlings and 150 olive saplings, while in Khirbet Samra village (Tubas) they grazed their livestock on 100 dunums of land planted with seasonal vegetables damaging the crops.

Settler-related violence has been on the rise since the beginning of March, according to the UN organization, with the weekly average of incidents resulting in injuries or property damage increasing by over 80 per cent compared to January-February.

In the meantime, Israeli forces carried out a total of 99 search and arrest operations across the West Bank and arrested over 100 Palestinians.

The majority of the operations (45) and arrests (55) were registered in East Jerusalem, 18 in the Hebron governorate and 14 in the Ramallah governorate.

In the Gaza Strip, OCHA said that on at least 48 occasions, Israeli forces opened warning fire in the areas adjacent to Israel’s perimeter fence and off the coast of Gaza while enforcing access restrictions. One fisherman was injured by a rubber bullet in the head, and two boats were damaged.

On two occasions, Israeli forces entered Gaza and carried out land-levelling and excavation operations near the perimeter fence, east of Jabaliya and Rafah.

Israeli annexation plans would lead to ‘cascade of bad human rights consequences’, says UN expert
Picture
An independent UN human rights expert warned yesterday that the new Israeli coalition government's plan to proceed with annexing significant parts of the occupied West Bank, including the Jordan Valley, will create "a cascade of bad human rights consequences".

"Israel's decision to unilaterally march ahead with the planned annexation on July 1 undermines human rights in the region, and would be a severe body blow to the rules-based international order," said Michael Lynk, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967. It would also further undermine any remaining prospect for a just and negotiated settlement, he said.

"If Israel's annexation plans proceed, what would be left of the West Bank would become a Palestinian Bantustan, an archipelago of disconnected islands of territory, completely surrounded and divided up by Israel and unconnected to the outside world," the Special Rapporteur said.

"The plan would crystalize a 21st century apartheid, leaving in its wake the demise of the Palestinians' right to self-determination. Legally, morally, politically, this is entirely unacceptable."

Human rights violations arising from Israeli occupation would only intensify after the annexation, Lynk said. "Already, we are witnessing forced evictions and displacement, land confiscation and alienation, settler violence, the appropriation of natural resources, and the imposition of a two-tiered system of unequal political, social and economic rights based on ethnicity."

Annexation has been strictly prohibited under international law since the adoption of the Charter of the United Nations in 1945. Drawing from the bitter lessons of two world wars fought within a generation, the international community outlawed annexation because it generates conflict, vast human suffering, political instability, economic ruin and systemic discrimination. Since 1967, the UN Security Council has affirmed the principle of "the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory" by force or war on numerous occasions with specific reference to Israel's occupation.

The Special Rapporteur expressed deep alarm that Israel's annexation plans are being supported and facilitated by the United States. "On many fronts, the US was a positive force in the post-war years for the creation of our modern system of international law. It understood that a strong network of rights and responsibilities was the best path to global peace and prosperity. Now, it is actively endorsing, and participating in, a flagrant violation of international law. Its legal duty is to isolate perpetrators of human rights violations, not abet them."

Lynk said the United Nations and its member states could no longer just offer criticism without consequences. "The looming annexation is a political litmus test for the international community. This annexation will not be reversed through rebukes, nor will the 53-year-old occupation die of old age," the Special Rapporteur said.

"As I stated in March, the international community should review its extensive menu of sanctions and countermeasures to stem this march towards further illegality. Settlement products should not enter the international marketplace. Agreements, existing and proposed, with Israel should be reviewed. The current investigations at the International Criminal Court should be supported," the UN human rights expert underscored.

"There has to be a cost to the defiance of international law," the Special Rapporteur said. "Only this can compel the Israeli political leadership to do the right thing."

British politicians demand UK impose sanctions on Israel if it annexes occupied territory
Picture
A total of 127 British politicians from all parties have written to the British Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary urging them to make clear publicly to Israel that any annexation of occupied Palestinian territory “will have severe consequences including sanctions.”

The Israeli government's coalition agreement between the Likud party, headed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Blue/White’s Benny Gantz stated that the new government can advance legislation on annexation after 1 July.

The annexation includes the Jordan Valley, the northern Dead Sea and the illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, more than 30 percent of the area of the occupied West Bank.

In an unprecedented intervention, British politicians including former cabinet members, ministers and senior diplomats, demanded actions not words in opposing any Israeli annexation. This would be “a mortal blow to chances of peace between Israelis and Palestinians based on any viable two-state solution.”

“We are writing to you to express our outrage at the new Israeli Government’s declared plan to annex areas of territories it occupied in June 1967,” said the letter. “It is already clear that the Israeli Government will use the cover of the Covid-19 pandemic to seek to implement this egregious plan. It is vital that the UK does everything in its power to prevent this.”

It added: “Annexation of occupied territory violates several UN Security Council Resolutions including UNSCR 242 and 2334.  It is a mortal blow to chances of peace between Israelis and Palestinians based on any viable two-state solution. The joint statement by the UK Government, together with France, Germany, Italy and Spain, on 12 September last year could not have been clearer. Unilateral annexation of any part of the West Bank would be 'a serious breach of international law’.”

The signatories to the letter pointed out that when Russia illegally annexed Crimea on 2014, Britain opposed these acts and imposed sanctions.
“International law is crystal clear. The acquisition of territory through war is prohibited. The Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014 is a recent example where Britain quite properly opposed such acts with appropriate measures, including robust sanctions,” it said.

“Britain upholds the international rules-based system, as you as Prime Minister have affirmed repeatedly. If we are to prevent other states with territorial ambitions from copying Israeli illegal behaviour, the UK must take a lead in standing up to this aggression. The international community is duty-bound to protect Palestinians under occupation.”

The signatories asked their prime minister “to take the lead in bringing our international partners together to prevent this illegal action. Our Government has stated that any annexation 'cannot go unchallenged’. The Government must now make clear publicly to Israel that any annexation will have severe consequences including sanctions. Words are not enough: Prime Minister Netanyahu has ignored our words. We need to prevent his Government from setting this alarmingly dangerous precedent in international relations.”

Chris Doyle, director of The Council for Arab-British Understanding (Caabu), commented: “Annexation has the potential to be a watershed moment.  On the ground Israel will gobble up ever more Palestinian territory and ride roughshod over international law. Internationally major European powers like Britain, who as these leading politicians show, will have to have the courage to go far further than anyone might have imagined to defend the international rules-based order. Sanctions should not be entered into lightly but such an action would more than warrant it, just as we did with Russia over Crimea.

For too long we have stood and watched as Israel violated Palestinian human rights.”

Vincent Fean, former UK Consul-General in Jerusalem and Chairman of the Balfour Project, said: “Annexation is a crime against the wellbeing of both peoples, Palestinian and Israeli. Britain has a duty to work with France, Germany and others to prevent it, with recourse to sanctions if Netanyahu ignores their warnings. “

Crispin Blunt MP said: “This is a massive test for the international community and for Britain which I hope we will pass.  We can take the seemingly easy way out, do nothing and pay for the consequences later.  We can send the message that in any of the many territorial disputes around the world, aggression and bullying wins. Or we can take a stand, demonstrate that international law does still mean something, and show that whether it is Russia, Israel or any other state, such actions have real and actual consequences.”

David Jones MP, Chair of Caabu, added: “I am sure the Government understands just how serious a breach of international law any Israeli annexation of Palestinian territory would be. As this letter shows, it would have widespread support to hold Israel account should it cross this line.

Sadly, this will probably require more than words; but such a violation of the rule of law cannot go unchallenged. I hope Israeli leaders will think twice before such a drastic decision, which would irrevocably destroy the chances of a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinian people.”

Stephen Kinnock MP, Chair of the Britain-Palestine All Party Palestine Group, said: “If the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary are genuinely committed to upholding the international rules-based order then they must now make it clear to the Israeli government that if annexation goes ahead then the British government will have no choice but to impose sanctions on goods that are produced in the illegally occupied territories.

“Annexation would be the final nail in the coffin of the two-state solution. This is a rubicon moment for Israel, for Palestine, and for the international community. The British government must act, because failure to do so would truly be a betrayal of our duty to stand up for human rights, peace, justice and the rule of law.’”

Layla Moran MP, said: “The UK has a proud history of not just abiding by but shaping the international law-based order. These worrying developments in Israel are clearly contrary to the letter and spirit of that liberal order and cannot go unnoticed.

I would urge the Government to make a clear and unequivocal statement making clear that it is against these illegal moves as soon as possible.”

Army To Demolish The Home Of A Palestinian Suspected Of Carrying Out A Stabbing Attack
Picture
Israeli soldiers invaded, on Friday at dawn, Tulkarem refugee camp, in the northern West Bank city of Tulkarem, and stormed the home of a wounded Palestinian, who is suspected of carrying out a stabbing, Tuesday, and handed the family a demolition order for their home.

Media sources said several army jeeps invaded the refugee camp, before the soldiers stormed the family home of Mohammad Reesha, 19, and interrogated them for a few hours.

They added that the soldiers then handed the father a demolition order targeting his home.

Protests erupted during the invasion, and the soldiers fired gas bombs, rubber-coated steel bullets, and concussion grenades at Palestinian youngsters, causing several injuries.

It is worth mentioning that Mohammad was shot by an Israeli civilian after he reportedly stabbed a woman, 62 years of age, in Kfar Saba city, causing moderate wounds. Mohammad was detained and was moved to Tel HaShomer Medical Center.

Israeli sources said the woman was stabbed seven times in the back and chest but did not suffer injuries to her internal organs before she was rushed to Meir Medica Center.

Israel’s wildly practiced policies of home demolitions targeting entire families are acts of illegal collective punishment and come in direct violation of International Human Rights Law.

Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention affirms that “no protected person may be punished for an offence he or she has not personally committed.

Collective penalties and likewise, all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited.”

PLO official welcomes European warning to Israel over annexation move
Picture
A senior Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Thursday welcomed the European Union’s letter warning Israel against the prospective move to annex parts of the West Bank.

Secretary-General of the PLO Executive Committee Saeb Erekat welcomed the joint EU letter warning Israel of the consequences of proceeding with its illegal plan to apply sovereignty over, or in other words to annex, the Jordan Valley and the illegal colonial settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Erekat welcomed the EU’s joint message to Israel, in which UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden, among other EU countries, said that “annexation of any part of the West Bank would be a violation of international law.”

“Such unilateral steps will harm efforts to renew the peace process and will have grave consequences for regional stability as well as Israel’s standing in the international arena,” they added.

Erekat added that the Palestinian leadership was maintaining diplomatic international contacts in order to prevent Israel from implementing its annexation plan.

On July 1, Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, will be able to vote on the annexation of large swaths of the West Bank in line with the US-touted Mideast plan, dubbed deal of the century, which in fact endorses Israel’s longstanding policy of permanent occupation, colonialism and apartheid over the Palestinian people.

Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu has declared many times his willingness to annex the illegal colonial settlements besides to the Jordan Valley, a fertile strip of land running west along the Jordan River, which is home of some 65,000 Palestinians and makes up approximately 30 percent of the West Bank, upon the formation of the new coalition government.

The annexation of Palestinian territory occupied in 1967 is illegal under international law, and it would put much of the occupied West Bank under Israeli sovereignty, leaving only a few small pockets of densely populated Palestinian bantustans.

Israeli forces smash plants nursery in south of West Bank
Picture
The Israeli military demolished today a nursery in a southern West Bank village under the pretext it was built without a permit, according to a local official.

Hasan Breijieh, director of the Wall and Settlements Resistance office in Bethlehem, told WAFA that soldiers raided Jourat al-Shamaa village, south of Bethlehem, and demolished an agricultural nursery owned by Mahmoud Abu Hammad.

He said the army has informed several other Palestinians in the Bethlehem district of plans to demolish their structures for construction without a permit.

The area in question is classified as C, according to the Oslo accords, which is under full Israeli military rule and makes up more than 60 percent of the area of the occupied West Bank where Palestinians are not allowed to develop or build anything.
