Wadi al-Hummos Residents Facing Displacement
Picture
By Anan Shehadeh

In 2005, precisely when the Israeli authorities began building the apartheid wall in Jerusalem and Bethlehem areas, the suffering of the residents of the Wadi al-Hummos, an area part of Sur Bahir, a Palestinian neighborhood southeast of the occupied city of Jerusalem, began to surface and gradually worsen.

The neighborhood, which is about 6000 dunams in area, was divided into two parts when building the wall was completed, with half of it being inside the wall, that is on the Jerusalem side, and the other half outside it that remained part of the West Bank, which is an area that reaches its borders from Sur Baher to Beit Sahour and other nearby villages in the Bethlehem district.

Last month, Israel decided to demolish 100 residential apartments on the West Bank side of the wall claiming they were built too close to the wall. It gave the resident until July 18 to evacuate the area.

The head of the services committee in Wadi al-Hummos, Hamada Hamada, said that the land where the buildings are located is under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority (PA) as defined in the Oslo Accords which classified the West Bank into areas A (under PA rule), B (joint PA, Israeli rule) and C (full Israeli control).

Hamada told WAFA that 6000 people live in Wadi al-Hummos and with the urgent need for urban expansion, residents of Sur Baher started to expand and built homes on their own land. However, with the construction of the wall and dividing Sur Baher land and people, problems began to surface with Israel issuing halt construction orders and threats of demolition.

Hamada said the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem would not provide them with services and at the same time refused to acknowledge that this land was under PA control. Whenever they asked for services, the municipality would tell him to go and get it from the PA.

“All the buildings have legal permits by the local government in Bethlehem,” he said, pointing to the poor conditions of life because of the absence of infrastructure from sewage network, water and even roads and the chaos of the construction process.

Hamada noted that many people are threated to have their Israeli IDs revoked and thus prevented from receiving medical services in Israeli hospital, stressing that many of the citizens are facing serious difficulties in registering their children in their personal IDs, and that there are a number of young men, boys and children, including those over the age of 22, who are still without civil documents.

“My daughter is three years now and she is still without legal documents. She has only a birth certificate without a number,” he said.

“There is a clear policy of emptying the area in order for it to be an extension of the surrounding settlements. I personally pay NIS $600 for national health insurance, as it is required in Israeli law, but I do not receive any services in return.”

Hamada pointed out that the people of Sur Bahir are Palestinian refugees who have UN cards and therefore it is necessary to protect them and not to displace them again, stressing that the demolition decision orders the owners of buildings and facilities to demolish them by themselves. If not, Israel will demolish them at their expense, which sometimes can cost up to $30,000.

He added that the danger lies in the fact that if the 100 apartments are demolished, the same thing will happen to the buildings in other areas and thus the displacement of more than 6000 citizens from their homes and land, meaning it could be the largest migration since 1967.

The governor of Bethlehem Kamel Hamid called for an action plan to thwart all the Israeli measures in the region.

“We all have to work together to reduce settlement ambitions in the region, especially Bethlehem, in general, “ he said. “It requires focusing on the legal side as well as providing all forms of aid and assistance to the population from water, electricity and infrastructure through a joint committee to ease the damage they are expected to face.”

He pointed out that there should be a clear understanding on a program of peaceful resistance in terms of setting up tents for protesting and expanding popular participation, as happened in Khan al-Ahmar, stressing that Bethlehem has recently been subjected to a raging settlement attack and repeated incursions.

The director of the office of the Wall and Settlements Resistance in Bethlehem, Hassan Breijieh, told WAFA that Wadi al-Hummos area attracted residents of Jerusalem who wanted to escape the difficulty of life under Israeli law there.

He pointed out that the demolition decision was issued by the Israeli Supreme Court at the recommendation of the Israeli army, noting that no clashes or any other military confrontations ever happened in the area. In fact, it was the Israeli forces who committed a crime against a young man from Hebron when they shot him while trying to reach Al Aqsa Mosque to perform Friday prayers in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Breijieh said the area has been quiet but there are attempts by the Israeli forces to create a state of tension there in order to cause confusion and implement plans of demolition of houses and justify the construction of the wall for “security reasons,” pointing out that the wall is illegal and causes harm according to international tribunals on the matter.

He said that a tent will be set up in the area outside the wall and will be used for solidarity purpose, adding that the area was chosen because it can easily be reached by individuals and delegations.

The director general of local government in Jerusalem, Musa al-Sha’er, said that a service committee in Wadi Al-Hummos was established in 2018 in order to provide services and be the authorized party to deal with the official authorities.

He pointed out that the granting of building permits in the region is still ongoing and it is the job of the PA, and that there are projects to be implemented in the coming period that include rehabilitation of the streets and the establishment of drinking water pipes. The local government gives $15,000 monthly to the Services Committee as operating expenses and to strengthen stability.

He explained that the area belongs administratively to Jerusalem, but at times the Local Government in Bethlehem was given the right for granting building permits.

Picture
Israeli soldiers abducted, earlier Monday, thirty-three Palestinians, including one woman, from their homes in several parts of the occupied West Bank, and demolished an under-construction home.

In Jenin governorate, in northern West Bank, the soldiers abducted thirteen former Palestinian political prisoners, after invading and ransacking their homes.

They have been identified as Sultan Khallouf, Mahmoud Qasrawi, Majdi Abu al-Haija, Ata al-Jabali, Jom’a Abu Khalifa, Khaled al-Hajj, Abdul-Jabbar Jarrar, Nidal Abdul-Hadi, Mohammad Souqiyya, Hasan Zaghal, Majed ‘Aabed, Ibrahim Jabr, and Allam Salah.

The abducted Palestinians are from Jenin city, Jenin refugee camp, Burqin, Zabbouba and Fark Dan.

Protests took place in Jenin refugee camp, after the soldiers stormed and ransacked homes, and fired many gas bombs and concussion grenades, causing many Palestinians to suffer the effects of teargas inhalation.

Furthermore, the soldiers invaded Khirbat al-Qat area in Beit Ummar town, north of the southern West Bank city of Hebron, and demolished a 150 square/meter under-construction home, owned by Mohammad Khalil Abdul-Fattah Sabarna.

During the invasion, the soldiers broke into several homes in the area, and searched them.

The soldiers also abducted Ahmad Wa’el at-Till, 26, from his home in the ath-Thaheriyya town, south of Hebron.

In Halhoul town, north of Hebron, the soldiers searched many homes and summoned several Palestinians for interrogation.

Israeli forces demolish Palestinian home in al-Khalil

The Israeli occupation forces on Monday demolished a Palestinian home under construction in Beit Ummar town north of al-Khalil city.

Local sources said that the Israeli forces, accompanied by military bulldozers, in the early morning hours stormed Khirbet al-Qit area and levelled Palestinian lands.

Activist Mahmoud Awad said that the Israeli bulldozers further demolished a home under construction owned by the Palestinian citizen Mohammed Sabarneh.

The Israeli forces on a regular basis demolish Palestinian homes and facilities in the West Bank and Jerusalem under the pretext that they lack the necessary building permits in an attempt to force the Palestinians to leave their cities.

Shaked settlement rapidly expands on Jenin lands
Picture
During a visit to Daher al-Maleh lands in Jenin, the mayor of Shaked settlement, accompanied by the head of Israeli settlement blocs in the West Bank and a representative of the Civil Administration, cold-heartedly told the Palestinian land owners that new settlement units will be built on their property.

While Israeli bulldozers were levelling privately-owned Palestinian lands in Daher al-Maleh, Shaked's mayor told the Palestinian families that they should accept the new land confiscation and settlement expansion works as a " reality" since they are approved by the Ministry of Interior.

Majed al-Khatib, a Palestinian resident of Jenin who had his lands bulldozed in the ongoing campaign, told the PIC that Shaked has turned from a residential bloc into a large industrial entity expanding rapidly on more Palestinian lands located behind the Apartheid Wall.

Al-Khatib added that the illegal settlement expansion currently taking place in that area does not receive enough media coverage.

Massive changes

Anti-settlement activist Tareq Mahmoud told the PIC that after the construction of the Apartheid Wall in the western side of Jenin province in 2002-2003, Israel gradually brought the settlements of Shaked, Hinanit, Reihan and Tel Menashe together in one settlement bloc called Reihan.

The bloc was in a later stage linked with main roads in Mei Ami and Katzir settlements in the 1948 occupied Palestinian territories, seizing vast tracts of Palestinian-owned lands in Ya'bad, Barta'a, Umm al-Riham and Amra areas.

Mahmoud said that Shaked is known for its large industrial area with 9 major factories working in various sectors. Furthermore, he added, Shaked enjoys multiple privileges that are not found in any other settlement in the 1948 occupied Palestine, including unmatched electricity and water services and reduced taxes.

Head of Daher al-Maleh village council Omar al-Khatib said that the number of Israeli settlers living in Shaked between 1981 and 2002 did not exceed 600, but the settlement has grown remarkably in the past decade.

"This dangerous settlement bloc is creeping silently on the lands of this area which has been divided and isolated by the wall. It all falls in line with a larger scheme to take over the entire territory," he warned.

Israeli Soldiers Bulldoze Palestinian Lands To Pave Segregated Colonialist Road
Picture
Dozens of Israeli soldiers, accompanied by bulldozers, invaded Palestinian lands in the al-Marmala area, in the West Bank’s Northern Plains, Sunday, and started bulldozing them to pave a new segregated road for illegal colonialist settlers.

Palestinian activist, Aref Daraghma, said the soldiers brought several bulldozers and heavy machinery since morning hours, Sunday, a started bulldozing the lands to prepare for the new colonialist road, the WAFA Palestinian News Agency has reported.

He added that many illegal colonialist settlers accompanied the soldiers in the invasion and the bulldozing of the Palestinian lands. video

It is worth mentioning that the Northern Plains, as well as many areas in the West Bank’s Jordan Valley, are subject to constant Israeli violations, including the demolition of homes, sheds and barns, and the bulldozing of Palestinian lands.

Israel has also frequently confiscated the Palestinian lands in these areas, to use them for the construction and expansion of its illegal colonies, in addition to using some of them as “closed military zones.”

The army also frequently displaces the Bedouins and farmers in the area, to conduct live-fire military drills, including the use of explosives, and in the process devastating and destroying the lands.

Many Palestinians, including children, have been killed, or injured, by Israeli army fire during these military drills, in the Jordan Valley and several parts of the West Bank, in addition to being killed by explosives dropped by the military during these drills.

IOF destroys nature reserve east of Yatta in W. Bank
Picture
The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) on Thursday demolished a nature reserve in the east of Yatta, south of al-Khalil in the West Bank.

Chief of Kaabneh and Daqiqa villages Udeh an-Najadah said Israeli bulldozers escorted by troops embarked on removing the fence of the Daqiqa nature reserve, which was established on about 150 dunums of land near the separation wall.

Najadah added that the bulldozers also razed trees and wells in the nature reserve as part of Israeli efforts to evict the local residents from the eastern areas of Yatta.

The Daqiqa nature reserve was established about 10 years ago with the assistance of foreign institutions in order to protect the land from Israel’s settlement activity. It contained over 5,000 trees and four wells for the collection of rainwater and was fenced with barbed wire.

There are about 250 Palestinian citizens living in Daqiqa village and they work in agriculture and animal husbandry.

The Israeli occupation authority seeks to evict the local residents from their area at the pretext they live in a military training region.

In a similar incident, the IOF demolished on Wednesday morning a park, water wells and a nature reserve in the villages of Khashm al-Daraj and Umm al-Khair in the east of Yatta.

Army Confiscates Irrigation Network In Central Plains
Picture
Israeli soldiers invaded, Wednesday, the al-Jiftlik village, in the West Bank’s Central Plains, and confiscated an irrigation network from lands owned by a Palestinian from the village.

Media sources said the soldiers invaded the lands, owned by a local farmer, identified as Na’el Bani Odah, and confiscated the irrigation network providing his farmlands with the needed water.

They added that the confiscated network and pipes were used to provide water for nearly 30 dunams, which for the past eight seasons have been planted with grapevines.

The incident is part of repeated violations carried out by the army, and in many cases by illegal colonialist settlers, in several parts of the occupied West Bank.

Soldiers Demolish Children’s Park, Wells, And Uproot Trees In Natural Reserve
Picture
Israeli soldiers invaded, Wednesday, a natural reserve area in the villages of Khashm ad-Daraj and Um el-Kheir, east of Yatta town, south of the southern West Bank city of Hebron, and demolished a children’s park, in addition to uprooting trees and demolishing water wells.

Ibrahim Eid al-Hathalin, the head of Khashm ad-Daraj village council, said dozens of soldiers invaded the area, before demolishing a children’s park, used by dozens of families.

He added that the soldiers also demolished several water wells, in addition to uprooting evergreens and other trees in the natural reserve.

The Israeli army claimed that the invaded lands, and the uprooted trees, are in an area “designated for military training.”

It is worth mentioning that the areas east of Yatta and its surrounding communities are subject to constant Israeli invasions and violations, including the demolition of homes and residential structures, in addition to shed and barns, as Israel is trying to illegally annex the lands and use them for its army and for the construction and expansion of Israel’s colonies.

In addition, the soldiers invaded Yatta town, especially downtown areas, before storming and ransacking many homes and shops, and confiscated surveillance equipment.

The soldiers also installed a military roadblock at the entrance of the ath-Thaheriyya town, south of Hebron, before stopping and searching dozens of cars, and interrogated many Palestinians while inspecting their ID cards.
